I see Rei and Asuka as being complementary to each other, as being like two sides of the same coin. Rei is night, the Moon, ice, yin, etc. while Asuka is day, the Sun, fire, yang, etc. And, in any case, my favourite Eva girl is Mana Kirishima and I think Shinji would be genuinely happier with her than anyone else. And I don't care if Mana is considered non-canon. She's canon in my eyes and that's all that matters to me.
