What threw me off is that I guess the textures I was using were too big. It seems like the textures shouldn't be bigger than 100x100 pixels (yeah that appears to be the magic number for optimal tiling).
I was experimenting with a 200x100 texture and wanted to play around with the cropping and found out that it's unfortunately limited to 5 frames (another strange number). I mean theoretically you could've imported some detailed frame by frame animation on like a sprite sheet or something but you can't do much with 5 frames.
