take top cover off with screw driver (keeping the screws somewhere safe like a box of skittles or tube of m&m)
splash with mentholated spirits & leave to dry over night
put on safety glasses, use an old tooth brush loosen grime a blast the ratchets with compressed air to get grime out of the houseing
when it seems clean spash with oil and leave over night
put on safety glasses, blast the ratchets with compressed air
use a clean spoke or cotton bud to apply white lithium geese or moybendium mining grease
put cover back on and make sure to cycle though the gears in order to further clean and loosen the return spring on the pivot of the paul
as for the brake levers
in general with low profile cantilevers 3 finger levers are only just adequate - very wooden unless your pads are set up perfectly
4 finger levers are some times supplied with low profile cantilevers but are better suited to medium profile cantilevers or the higher performance center and side pull calipers
normal two finger levers can only really be used with v brakes
however there are some levers where the pivot point of the cable anchor inside the lever can be adjusted for different lengths of cable pull
