It's used to stop the train on that line if it were to start moving when the points at the bottom of the picture are set against it; instead of rolling along on to the other line (potentially hitting something) it just gently rolls off the rails and stops without fouling the other line (hopefully).
When the points are set for that line, the trap point will also close so that the train can run over them.
