I live in the city where everyone rides in the road or off in the shoulder, literally everyone. but I'm the only one on a mountain bike so I guess it works for me. I guess I prefer it in a way, I can zone out and listen to music and not have to pay attention to whats around me

I bought a second hand bike and was about to replace the chain until I measured the wear on the existing chain, and it was really stretched (3/16 of an inch over 12 inches). I imagine this will have worn the cassette(altus) and chain ring(small bosch one) quite badly. Should I bother replacing the chain at this point or should I just run the current drive train into the ground after a decent clean and replace the whole lot in one go or will changing my chain now have any chance of saving my cassette and chainring or is the picrel(shalom) correct and a new chain will just be stretched out quick by the already worn cogs.
It is not too expensive to do the whole thing either so will getting a fully new drive train significantly improve the quality of the ride or should I keep everything on until something breaks?

I generally sight the chainring. That wears last and if that is not worn, i'll chance the cassette & chain.

Post a pic if you're unsure. It's quite easy to eyeball chainrings. Cassettes are more difficult. You will also wear out your jockey wheels if you continue down the trash it all together path.

The anon who put the massive Sunrace 12-spd cassette on his bike and went 1x12.

I need more details on your complete setup of your drive train. Exact part numbers.

I have as of today mounted on the bike:
Sunrace MZ903 12-spd cassette
XTR M9100 SGS rear derailleur
XTR M9100 12-spd shifter
Deore M6100 12-spd chain (at .25 wear)

For the life of me I cannot get this fucking shit to shift normal. High and low screw stops- no problem. B-screw, no problem. Chain links, no problem.

What is your exact setup and did you install everything FRESH out of the package? I am wondering if my .25 wear "used" chain is throwing off my shit since everything else is new.

- raise bar
- tilt bar down and/or move levers higher
- could move saddle forward but that can fuck up weight distribution so not necessarily the best idea
- if your bars are longer reach (~100mm or more) you could replace them with shorter ones which will look better than a chode stem

your problem is that your frame is too big (both stack and reach), moving the bars up will marginally reduce the reach but will increase the stack more

You very likely might have some huge reach on your -bars- not stem. It might be viable or even sensible to convert the type of bar you have, bike depending.

I bought a 70's Raleigh and adjusted the derailleurs, but the chain keeps rubbing the FD cage as I pedal in nearly every gear. I can't move the FD cage any closer to the frame, I even unclamped the FD and turned it slightly to give the chain more clearance, but it didn't help. Is this an issue that can be solved with a new chain?

5,6,7,8 speed chains all have the same internal width
the 8 speed ones are narrower externally. That changes between brands. I think sram are narrower than kmc. But it's like half a millimeter difference.
So if you have an old chain on it then a new 8 speed one would give you a tiny bit of extra leeway.

The real solution is either a different FD with a lower low limit or a slightly wider bottom bracket spindle.
For the latter you should consider if that would improve your chainline or not, and also how wide a q-factor you like riding.
Assuming it's friction shifting trial and error on FDs if you have a chain with a quicklink should be relatively easy though you might fray the cable trying them. That's really the best solution as narrower q-factor tends to be better. It does depend on what access you have to parts though, if it's a junker or not.

If your bb is rough/loose already that's a more obvious solution.

It might be doing that in some of the smaller gears because I unclamped and turned the FD itself or in reality I had two issues to begin with. I think a skinnier chain might fix the problem, I should replace it anyway. If that doesn't fix it maybe the chain has too much slack for one reason or another.

I replaced my chain but its one part too long and now its bouncing a little too much and its changing gears on its own. My drive shaft thing is a shimano deore xt. Do i have to put more tension on the chain or what?

Did you cut it to match the old one before you put it on? To check if the chain's too long shift to the smallest gear in both front and back to maximize slack, does the rear derailleur fold up completely so the chain is (or is very close to) rubbing against itself?

nevermind the spring can handle one more piece the real problem was that the gears and the chain got too dirty and the chain got stuck sometimes. Cleaned it and the gears and now its like new.

Does anyone know if I can use a 8-speed cassette on a Shimano 1055sc hub and rear derailleur? Currently I have a 7-speed cassette. The cassettes can't be the same width, right? I don't think there's a spacer in there right now.

There are different freehub bodies from that 7-to-8spd transition period. The 7spd ones have a shoulder that's on the hub side, the 8spd and later ones got rid of that shoulder.

There's an idea, called "8 of 9 on 7", etc. Get a 9spd cassette and take one cog off, then install that on the 7spd hub. The 9spd-width cogs plus 9spd-width spacers will let you fit 8 cogs on that older freehub body.
I've done it both by removing the largest cog, and by removing the smallest cog. Wouldn't recommend removing one in the middle, because you will have a large jump between adjacent gears (feels bad), and because it preserves the pattern of shift aids/contoured cog teeth.

To get the large cog off, I had to drill out three rivets that held most of the cassette together. I just wrapped the cassette in a junk chain, clamped that in a drill press vise & knocked them out.
For running without the smallest cog, I just bolted the thing up and tossed the small cog in the trash. I thought I might have to use a different cassette lockring w/ slightly shorter threaded section, but that wasn't necessary. Several months later, it's still working fine. Haven't had to retighten it, and in practice 12t is good enough, I don't find myself missing the 11t.

Can't advise about shifting, I only use friction, and they have no problem with this sort of thing.

Do you have the wrong size wheel in that fork? You'd need a very long reach rim brake caliper to reach if that's the stock wheel. Fix whatever's wrong with your disc brake setup instead.

Yeah, that's why I flipped them. It adds 1mm of reach and that's enough to avoid them touching the tire.

Less than 2mm, there's usually about 1mm clearance between the dropuouts (half each side). So you're only spreading it ~1.5mm total.

And before someone "corrects" me... 127mm, 131mm frame spacing... 126mm, 130 hub OLD, so (130-127)/2.

I live in the UK and it's apparently illegal to ride a bike on the pavement (sidewalk). I'd like to be able to do that, it could make a lot of things easier and it would be preferrable to not be on liveleak. I have a young relative who may be getting a bike as a gift and they can use it for going to school and back. Fell off my bike, bent derailleur hangar. Had bike shop bend it back and tune it, 2 smallest cogs still click and are ready to shift up nearly.

I want the rear derailleur to go 2 or 3mm outboard so it will shift okay. But the H limit is already hit. What do? Did I bend the frame too? Derailleur? Bike shop says its "Fine". But clicking in the two lowest gears is not fine.

It's a Microshift Advent X 1x10.

If it was the limit screw it would only mess with the very last gear, and when they align the hanger they align it to the wheel so it wouldn't even matter if the frame was bent (not that that's likely anyway). Try turning the little knob on the derailleur that the wire goes through clockwise a little bit and see if that fixes it, otherwise it sounds like they did a shitty job aligning the hanger so go bitch at them on monday (when the manager's more likely to be there). Good shifting on some parts of the cassette but not others is a symptom of a (still) bent hanger. In the meantime you could look carefully at the derailleur and frame for signs of damage just in case.

does it really matter if i put in the fucking o-ring that goes between the headset cover and the steerer tube? my chinese carbon headset cover has a slot for an o-ring but didn't come with an o-ring included. i bought several different o-rings, the NBR felt way too firm and tight, the silicone is softer but easily gets damaged and i don't have the special lube for the silicone o-ring, i'd have to use soapy water or spit and possibly have to replace it with a new o-ring every time i take off the headset cover. it's such a tiny amount of water that would seep in, even if i wash my cockpit once in a while i don't think the headset bearings will get intantly ruined just from that. it's mainly the bottom bearing that would get exposed to water via road splash, the top bearing is less of a concern. the top bearing only costs a few bucks to replace and i would replace it at the same time as the bottom bearing.

Ultra sports sacrifice all puncture protection to provide as much traction/speed performance an entry level could provide but in the end, it's still an entry level tire. they're decent for the price. it's harder to find a good deal on gp 5000 or gp 4 season in the US compared to europe but for example jensonusa has 25mm gp 5000 for $45 each. it's up to you though if you think they're worth the extra money.

I meant something else. When you buy a new 8-speed cassette, you won't have to unscrew anything to get the smallest cog off, right? Because it's loose and not screwed to the other cogs. So I could just throw it out, and tighten the lockring (onto the 2nd smallest cog)?

Alright folks, not entirely sure if this is the best thread for the question but I'll ask anyways.
I'm getting a new bike. I currently own a cheapo folding bike and I'm planning on getting an actual big boy bike. Problem is, I don't know wether I should get a road bike or a hybrid.
I bike almost daily around 5 miles (so not really worth buying an electric) entirely in a relatively flat area of my city, but I'm looking for something a bit sportyer than a city bike.
Thing is, I'd also like to use the bike for longer trips around my state.
Are hybrids worth it, or should I just get a decent road bike?

I've got access to two bikes in varying states of neglect. A Puch Clubman and a Batavus B1. Not my images but basically the same bikes. The Puch has all original parts and was just neglected. How do I fix my front gear now switching? I was riding along and went to switch gears. Then it got like.. caught up in itself and couldn't switch. I was changing gears fine for the first 15min of riding; and I can change my back gears no problem. I genuinely can not see the problem or why it won't switch, also the chain is rubbing against the guard now too. It's a gravel bike with paddle shifters if that matters.

I find my gravel bike with 40mm continental terra trail tires to be fast as fuck, and I’ve never tried faster tires.

I have 25mm internal width rims that claim down to 38mm tire is “ideal”, but continental says their 32mm GP5000 is compatible with 25mm hookless rims too.
Should I get 32mm GP5000? Should I play it safe and get 38mm slicks from someone else? Should I just keep using the knobby 40mm terra trails? If it’s anything like last year, it’ll stay dry in the city for the entire time. Everything in my life is tubeless.

The problem with the GP5k, while awesome, is they essentially just neuter that awesome gravel bike to just the road.

Most square taper cranks like that use a bolt rather than a nut, but most bike shops will probably still have some on hand for a buck or two. Alternatively, you can take the nut from the other side to a good hardware store and check the thread size. I think they're M10 thread with a 14mm interface, but I honestly have never actually checked the thread size myself.

the larger problem you have is that the crank arm taper will have deformed after being ridden loose and is unlikely to be able to get another good press-fit. You should also try to pick up a replacement crank arm, just in the same length is fine. Should be cheap too from the right kind of bike shop, for a used one.

The bottom bracket is also probably worn out but you don't seem like you care. Just make sure you properly clean and then lightly grease the spindle and thread before you reinstall it.

I've ridden quite a lot of gravel on 28 GP5ks (and 4Ks) and other road tires. Working in gravel sections to long road rides and stuff. Obviously not super rough, but you know, dirt roads and gravel.

Nice road tires are actually pretty good for unpaved roads, they tend to have excellent grip and a comfy ride for their size. They're better on gravel than marathons for example, even several sizes up.

The only issue is you're prone to cut them up, the tread, and the sidewalls. It's just expensive/risky. But that's the case for nice gravel tires like kangz too, just less so.

Super wide rims for road tires is a very common meme with fancy roadfags. You absolutely could/should do it. The one caveat with that is it will expose the sidewalls of the fragile road tire even more because it kinda splays them out.
Narrow road tires are catagorically faster than nice gravel tires. You will notice the difference. It's like a few free gears of speed. That being said I don't mind riding nice gravel tires on the road. They are still fast.

First step would be checking the brake tracks aren't worn out and they don't have wild spoke tension or are badly buckled. Then to service the hubs and see how the bearings are.

After that it would be if the chainrings have life or not, which if they don't basically means the entire drivetrain is shot.
Also if the seatpost/stems are badly stuck.

Then the ideal bike is a drop bar sport-tourer. That's in classic parlance.
An endurance disc road bike with wide tire clearance and rack mounts or a sporty gravel bike, fit the same niche.

It really depends on price. Post height and craigslist if you want some recs.

Two out of last four rides I've had to adjust my B-limit screw because the jockey wheel and gears would clash on the biggest cog. Never happened before that and bike is 3 years old. No damage at all that I can see, haven't crashed, hanger was aligned basically perfectly when I checked, LBS monkey was too busy today to look at it... I just put some loctite on the screw but could it be anything else?

Bollocks does it. Exercise isn't the most important factor in weight loss and if you're already downgrading that aspect by e-biking it then it's even less. I will make an e-bike allowance exception for old people as the bike is doing 100% of the work there so zero exercise but they'd be on the bus otherwise so similar.

see, the lightweight chainring style isn't the most laterally stiff, especially if it's a very basic stamped aluminium chainring. the sram s300 crankset is said to feel almost as stiff as sram omnium, most of the difference can probably be attributed to the flimsier chainring.

I’m worried about max psi for my weareone carbon rims though, I’ve never gone above 40psi and I can’t find anything about max psi. They’re 25mm width I’m sure theyre fine but they’re specifically mtb-oriented

Yeah that's within spec (on the outer limit). I'd trust him.

I think it makes sense to spec wheels for the clearance of your frame so if it fits 50+ then 32mm wide is good.
If you really are planning to mostly run 40s though then like 25mm wide would make more sense imo.

ew no what the fuck

the only thing you should be putting on your drivetrain is chain lube. Anything more viscous is just going to attract grit and create a black grinding paste.

Your drivetrain will wear faster but with modern coatings, aluminium rings, lube, it rust shouldn't really be a problem if you store the bike inside.

The larger issue almost is grit/water/snow ingress to bearings. Really the best solution for it all is just to ride the thing and overhaul it properly when you can. So buy a bike you can afford consumables for.

Cutthroat fits the bill nicely but it's really fucking expensive like 1.5k more than the Niner. I know the niner doesn't quite exactly fit the bill but I like the fact its geometry is a little more road focused (not like a Surly or a Fargo), tons of mounting options, can accept 50mm tire/2", unique frame material (not a lot of bikes made with reynolds 853) and underbiking might be fun

They are both on the spectrum of what I am looking for, niner more on the road side and cutthroat more on the mtb side

I asked niner if I can put a suspension fork on the RLT9 and they said yes but no more than 50mm. Is there a big difference between 50mm and 100mm? I am also quite paranoid of the "fragility" of the carbon frame. I dig the niner's steel frame but I am quite paranoid of the corrosion

Yes, it's about 50mm more, or also double.
In all seriousness, 100mm of travel is more or less the starting point of mountain bike suspension travel which you'll see on short-travel cross country style mountain bikes. Anything less than that is typically going to be a shitty fork that you see on a hybrid or something except some of the "gravel" forks that have come out recently. I think the Rock Shox ones come in 30mm and 40mm.

I wouldn't worry too much about either of those. Everyone has their own biases and beliefs, but I think they're both fine, especially the steel. Many steel frames these days come with an ED coating that's really great, and then the outside of course has additional paint applied. If a frame doesn't have the ED coating, it's easy enough to apply a spray coating to the inside yourself. But consider the fact that there are thousands and thousands of steel frames out there still going strong that don't have any coating applied.

I’ve reseated tubeless tyres with a mini pump I keep on my mtb (though not the initial bead seat, for which I use a floor pump). Goat head/cat ear thorns here that tubeless works out identical in cost to buying patch kits at retail prices just with better performance and more convenience

I'd say it depends on what you're riding - I've been on road tubeless the past year after two decades with tubes and I have no complaints at all about it, and really like that it means that flats from tiny punctures basically never happen, and medium sized punctures just mean that your tire drops to an annoyingly low but rideable pressure. It's quite nice for that, but frankly if I had to pay for tubeless wheels (I didn't) I wouldn't think it worth the cost over tubes since those are perfectly fine. But on my gravel bike, tubeless is worth every penny since it means you can run lower pressures for lots of traction without having to run the biggest, knobbiest tires you can possible clear under your frame.

It doesn't have to be messy - suspend the wheel from a stand or something before you unseat the bead, don't have it laying on the ground so that all the sealant spills out when you take the tire off. Then use a little squeeze bottle with a tip, a syringe, turkey baster, or anything similar and you can easily suck out pooled sealant from the bottom of a partially uninstalled tire.

after that point you should change the bars to ones with more rise, maybe also, backsweep to compensate for the extra stem reach if you go over 100mm.

I wouldn't get an adjustable. They can creak and they're ugly. It's another thing to fail that you don't want to fail.

getting your grips on and off to change the bars is pretty easy.

you probably get away with a stem change, maybe tilt them down a bit.

You're supposed to have full lock of the steering without cables binding but it's ok to just be able to turn the bars 90° so the brakes don't lock up when you pull a sharp slow speed turn. The full lock thing is to avoid damaging the cables but if your alternative is replacing them that's kinda ok.

Looks like you've done the good upgrades, pedals, makin it fit good, accessories.

Tires would probably be what i'd spend money on if you do want to upgrade but again, wear those ones out first.

the one preventative thing i'd consider is servicing the hubs now or soon because very cheap wheels are often adjusted badly or have little/cheap grease in them, and they'll run better and last longer if you do service them and spend some time dialing in the preload adjustment. But again, meh.

Personally I swear by merino wool. I also use an (older model) Fox Ranger Fire jacket that I really like. Although I'm loath to recommend Fox since they ruined their current line of mtb trousers that used the be really nice.

I have nothing to base this on but a hunch, but I suspect some cheaper budget brands may treat their wool incorrectly, killing the enzymes in the wool the that give merino it's magical self-cleaning property. But take that statement for what it's worth.

I've heard the synthetics are able to dry off a lot more quickly than wool and retain heat better while wet. A major downside is that they get stinky fast, because as you know they don't have the self cleaning properties of wool.

Merino wool bottoms and some synthetic tops might be the way to go.

Another opinion on this: merino stuff is posh and everything but in the end you're going to be stinky after a long ride so who cares if your baselayer is stinky. I go full synthetic baselayer and toss them into the wash everytime.

As for jackets I use a shell type one with fleece lining that is windproof with little vents. Rockbros makes it, I'm sure it's a copy of a more expensive jacket but honestly it's the best one I've bought. Pearl Izumi makes a nice winter jacket.

In my opinion cycling in the winter is like hiking in the winter but even more so. You don't want a big puffy coat you want multiple sleek layers and finishing it off with a shell jacket. And spend as much attention to your hands being windproof. If you are in extreme cold/wet/slush and ride then buy a pair of the neoprene zip gloves. (The ones so nice Miguel Angel Lopez had a meltdown over Movistar losing his at a race.)

essential winter gear:

>baselayer
>jacket

>baselayer bottoms
>winter chamois shorts that are really pants if you are in serious cold weather (over 20 is fine with the regular chamois shorts over a baselayer)

it kind of depends on the width between the lifting and descending plate of the front derailleur, and also the profile of the lifting plate and trailing arm.
for the older systems its generally fine to give each chain ring 3 rear sprockets
.eg,
counting from left to right when looking down on the drive train while on the bike
chain ring 1 goes with sprocket 123,
chain ring 2 goes with sprocket 456,
chain ring 3 goes with sprocket 789,
of course the gearing system will work outside of this ranges
.eg chaining 1 will work with sprocket 4, but it will be close to rubbing on something, and also the Rear derailleur may not provide enough chain tension.
and the middle chaining can access more gears such as 34567, just pay attention to how smoothly things are working

My saddlebags are loaded up with like 15lbs of shit and I think thats what burst it. The tube was rated 45-65 and it was filled to 60.
What do you think, is it my fault?
I already decided I will change the tube myself because I dont want to go back and explain my story like a sperg plus they have limited hours

If your tires can't handle being lightly dropped on the floor with 15 pounds of cargo and no rider then they weren't safe to begin with. It's a miracle you made it home. Bad tube installation could cause it but so could a damaged rim/tire. If you've never had this problem before and whatever caused the flat didn't damage the wheel then it's probably not that, but as long as it's already apart inspect the rim for dents or whatever and the tire for holes. If you haven't taken the tire off yet you should know exactly where to look based on where the hole in the tube is.

You should inspect your tube and tire together and the rim as well since there are several possible causes: if your tube blew out because you ran over a big nail or something that's not their fault. If the blowout was caused by a rim strip not in place, that might be their fault for not noticing it but that may have been beyond the scope of what they could practically fix for you. Or they could have messed up and pinched the tube inside the tire during installation in which case it's totally their fault for messing that up.

I don't think it's productive playing the blame game with flat tires.
What matters is working out the cause and making sure it doesn't happen again.

Bike shops do not charge or care enough to be autistic about tracing and tracking flats, or even installing tires well, so they will not be good at actually solving problems. They also will re-use old tubes, and not re-do marginal rim tape because customers do not want added costs for preventative reasons.
You're also unlikely to get the same mechanic to remember and care about the history of the problem which is important for flat tires. They'll start fresh each time so they are losing out on diagnostic information. Telling them things doesn't really help either because your word to them is not meaningful.

You either get lucky, get frustrated, or become an autism master at looking after your own shit. Dealing with flats is a complex skill set.

this centering screw isn't actually load bearing when squeezing the brake, right? it just defines the stopping point for the side pivot in the relaxed state. i've seen conflicting statements on online forums. when setting up my front brake i squeezed it too hard and heard some metal "fail" noise. i had to re-center the brakes and turn the barrel nut to bring the pads back closer to the rims and i tightened the recessed nut and cable clamp harder. i think the cable slipped in the clamp. i had torqued it to minimum spec but that wasn't enough apparently. in the shower i had a thought that what if it was the centering screw that stripped the threads in the caliper because i only have an undersized M4x5mm titanium set screw in at the moment while waiting for M4x8mm set screws to arrive, but it seems fine.

Is it load bearing? First we have to define which load. In my head most of the braking load goes to the center bolt but that screw is not load free, when the lever is applied, the non-screw side pushes up on that screw to apply the screw side brakes. The load it does see would be from the lever and cable, not braking load. However, by applying excessive braking force, the lever and cable would put excess stress on that screw and brake arms, stripping the internal threads is possible but I think what's more likely is the screw digging into or possibly cracking the non-screw side brake arm.

i think it goes like this: the cable pulls the two arms together along the pivots. the screw only gets loaded when the arms are moved in the opposing direction by the return spring. the screw affects how wide the arms open but in an asymmetric way which is why you also have to adjust the cable tension with the barrel adjuster when making big adjustments with the screw.

The reason why you're wrong is because there is only 1 anchor point for the cable and that's the cable housing/screw-side arm. Look closely at the action and start at the lever then follow the flow of energy. From the lever-cable-non screw side arm (pull) and from there look closely at how the non-screw side arm interacts with the screw side arm when pulling the brakes. The energy moves up from the non-screw side arm to the screw side arm because of the counter rotation behind the non-screw arm rotating upwards into the screw arm which then uses the center bolt as a pivot to apply the screw side brake pad onto the wheel

The fundamentals are the same but the action is not, otherwise dual pivots wouldn't be that much more significantly better than single pivots and it's because dual pivots allows closer to equal braking torque on both pads. This is where you're wrong though, I was wrong in that pivot screw lifting the other side of the arm but looking at how the brake actuates again, you can see it's behind the non-screw arm so it counter rotates into the direction of the other arm (the screw side), so it maintained contact AND integrity the whole time, at rest and under load as if it's almost a single piece. Looking at my parts bin brakes shows pretty significant wear at that contact point too, not enough to suggest load wear but frictional wear from rubbing or something

I just realized how simple that pivot screw is, it brings the screw-side arm closer to the wheel so when the brakes are actuated, the cable housing has less distance required to push the pads to contact the wheel, increasing applied braking force for that side. How it affects braking torque via asymmetrical mechanical leverage, I'm too tired to think about right now.

What kind of weight could I expect in a good titanium frame? Want to build something nice when I'm able to, so just dreaming for now. I like this Deda frame (despite the external cable routing) but it's no feather. 1.45kg for the frame alone, another 360g from the carbon fork (appears to be a separate weight). And that's in medium as well.

It seems like Litespeed had something around 1kg but wanted to see what else is out there. Sabbath frames sold by Spa Cycles interest me but they generally don't give any weight claims on their site.

I have a pair of these, except wire because I’m broke as fuck and that’s what I could get conveniently. I used them for most of this period (pic related, my spring/summer as a newbie cyclist), losing 15 pounds and down to 217 now. Strava actually lost a lot of data on my last long ride so add another 2300 ft climbed. They made a nice difference over the tires that came on my craigslist bike. Those ones took a puncture straight through to the tube in my first 80 miles of cycling, (on the rear) despite looking perfectly fine. May give an indication what kinda debris I see. Glass, nails, bolts, rusty car fragments plus New England potholes. All of them, every single ride, even the pretty short ones.

These are some of the fastest rolling compound on the budget end for everyday tires based on the reviews and testing I saw. I have a few micro tears on the rear (should probably check the front) but with some luck I’ll get them to last around 2k miles and get a whole year out of it.

Sometimes I ride with my dad so I can’t constantly drop him and I do grocery/store trips with the bike. Mix of urban and suburban roads. Speed is improving as I treat it more like a sport (~13.7 mph without any pauses) but I still like casual recreational cycling a lot. Maybe need to track different types of riding separately with different apps.
