if you want to take up backpacking in the future, you should try hiking in 1/2 mile to 1 mile in. That's far enough that you don't rely on your storing things in your car, but close enough that your car is there if something serious goes wrong. That way when you start backpacking you don't develop bad habits from overpacking and relying on things you can keep in your car.
if you want to backpack then:
