test all the auxiliaries (head lamp by night hiking, compass by navigating off trail; cooking by making lunch; water filter, etc.) on day trips if you don't feel comfortable jumping to camping overnight.
Then from there for overnighters it's just a jump to tent + sleeping bag + sleeping pad. For your first trip pick a spot 1-2 miles in, that way if you forget anything essential it's just a 30 minute walk away; but you're far enough from the trailhead you're not going to get lazy and depend on food, water, etc. that you're storing in the car.
