The Cave in your pic is filled with trash and probably has been trudged through for the past 20 years.

UK caving is pretty weird.

American caving is more interesting, especially when you get into karst walking and digging. You find a small sink or fissure, dig out loose rock and soil, and then you get to be the first person ever in that cavity of the earth.

The last true earthly frontier, behind the depths of the ocean of course.

In Nevada, there's shitloads of abandoned mines, and they're cool as hell to explore. I just make sure I keep a gun on me for desert kitties and the like, but I really enjoy it. Just drive around in the desert for a while and look for mountiansides, chances are there's a mineshaft in the side of it.

Probably not, but it makes me feel slightly better. Plus I never go cave exploring without someone else, and they're usually armed as well, so at least I have a little bit of backup.

I just have trouble with tight spaces, I know that the cave wouldn't collapse, that isn't what scares me, I'm a big guy so I would be scared to go through that, I know it's partially irrational, but some people just don't have the nerve to do spelunking

I used to do it a few years ago but haven't been underground in a while.
It's basically like 3D rock climbing. And you come across some truly beautiful places underground and sometimes you are the first person to find a little passage or something. It's about as close as it gets to being on another planet.

Another bit of advice is to ditch the gang and only take maybe 1 person with you at most. You get less distracted trying to impress them and sound like you are having fun. Probably a combination of things; the Mossdale incident primarily if I had to guess followed by the restrictive size of the country limiting the number of caves to mostly private land.
