Anime is still fringe, btw. You are likely just isolated from the general normie way of life. After I left secondary school and made my way about halfway through uni I realised my perception of 'fringe' interests had shifted dramatically.
It's really easy to separate your own life to an extent you forget how the average person lives. I'm not trying to say I'm inherently special or better than anyone else here, btw.
Anime is arguably fringe in Japan in certain ways. And if you're an American, you're probably used to a significantly more 'mainstream' approval of anime and related stuff than in the EU.
Anime won't be mainstream for a long time, and that's speaking only of the shows that even people who habitually watch anime in the west view as mainstream. If you're watching niche shows, and you specifically seek out anime for its genre and watch it over other media, your attitude will likely never catch on, at least in your lifetime.
