I bought a xf70-300 to do long distance landscape, where I'm taking pictures of things miles away, or the horizon. The thing is, every long distance photo I take has wobbly haze. Is this just how it is? If so, what's the point of having a long lens, just to take photos of small nearby things like birds?

Pic related is a crop of a long distance shot at 300mm f/11 ss1/900 iso400 shot handheld with OIS on. If this is how it's all going to be I'm just going to sell the lens and give up on long distance.

Outside of cities you will find much less of this haze, if at all (especially in cooler months).
You will also find a lot more animals; most of which are easily spooked by humans, thus you need a long lens to get pictures of them.

Finally, what the fuck is the point of taking a picture of a building with a 300mm lens from 1km away, it's not like the building is goin to run away if you get closer.

Here's the crop in. Wiggles everywhere. The temperature today was 74f, is that the issue? Would I get better results mounted to a tripod with OIS off?

There is more to it that just pointing your camera at stuff. You need to consider weather, position of the sun, time of day, time of year. Sorry, it doesn't come on a plate you have to think, you have to work. Buying a new lens is the easy bit.

I bought it for cheap so I knew I could sell it for a small profit if I didn't like it - I'll hold onto it a while longer to work on my approach and see if I can improve my results. I'm going to hike it up a mountain next time, I imagine that being up so high means that there's much less heat haze due to the line of sight to the horizon being far above the ground. I'm discouraged but so far I've only shot it in suboptimal conditions so it can only improve

Yeah, this is how it is. It's why I just sold my 70-300 and got a 50-140 instead.

I mean, as other pointed out, you can just shoot when the atmospherics are better, but for me it felt like I could benefit more from something more high quality at more forgiving focal lengths that could also double as a good portrait lens.

Actually I'm leaning more and more towards thinking 80% of photographers, myself included, would be best served with nothing but the flagship standard zoom for their system. The longer you go the lower the chance of getting a good shot because of atmospherics and the wider you go the lower the chance of getting a good shot because of clutter in the frame. So it's better to spend your money where you have the greatest chance of coming home with good shots.

Long landscapes at infinity never look good. Find anchor subject close to you, have it in focus, then you can have shit ton of heat and pollution distortions in the background and it won't matter, because it'll be blurred.

The real issue here is the pollution of cities that is just accepted wrongly. Everytime I go to a city, people are walking round slower, dragging, fatigued. Its because their air is poisoned and its killing them.
