Never posted here but what pocket camera can I even buy for less than 300 euros?
All these old used pocket cameras on ebay are way over priced. Going on YouTube I find a title best pocket camera for 200 dollars and when I search to buy it myself it costs 400 dollars on ebay and it's old and heavily used or broken.

The nikon 1" are pretty cheap. You can usually find them on japanese auction sites at 200-250 usd with lenses. I know it has interchangeable lenses but it's still pretty tiny

There is absolutely a fad going on right now, I see totally basic girls grabbing old coolpix cameras from 00s, it's bizarre. That said, I do enjoy my gr2, when I was working downtown that camera basically lived on my neck.

I feel that way about 50mm which everyone loves. 28 just fits me for some reason, and most of my favorite photos were shot on 28s on various systems. I don't know why I can almost never make the nifty fifty work.
I hear you on the viewfinder thing. The ricoh is a great camera for those times when you don't want to carry a camera. In those circumstances it's amazing. Just sits under your jacket weighing nothing until that random moment. Whenever I'm actually looking to take photos I bring something with a viewfinder.

With a smaller sensor (smaller sensors are always worse in every way unless you consider the smallness and cheapness desirable) and a worse lens to boot (smaller sensors need to be put behind the best lens possible because if the pixels are so small the aberrations must be as well). And then to make it even worse it forces HDR and a bunch of tasteless edits. I can't turn it off, I can only use a third party app with ass controls.

Or I could stuff the phone in another pocket, only use it for communication to save battery, and use a superior camera.

Pocket cameras we are talking about here use 1” or crop sensors. Sony had a couple of film frame models too. They’re all much bigger than your phone sensor - which is probably around 1cm.
The sensor size is one of the reason why the phone has to do so much magic to make the photos come out nice (and modern phone magic is quite magical). Unfortunately that also removed a lot of the creative process that a real camera allows.
Modern phones take great photos. They’re just a less fun imo.

I brought both my XF10 and a camera with 35mm lens with me on a holiday and like 99% of my keepers were shot with the 35mm. I hate it because I love the idea of getting everything out of a compact camera but it keeps disappointing me. Yet I keep trying because I know it should be capable of doing everything a big boy camera can.

1" sensors don't measure 1". The diagonal is 16mm, closer to 5/8".
The 1" designation comes from them matching the imaging area of a 1" diameter vidicon tube.

Aside from what the other anon said it’s not actually 1in either. It’s a type 1/1.28. The difference is 75mm^2 vs 120+. APS-C is about 372mm^2, full frame is 864mm. Sensors are getting larger, but there will always be compromises in a system that needs to be a quarter inch thick altogether. Hence all the AI.

What is a point and shoot? The definition is all over the place. I’m seeing the full frame Leica Q3 is listed as a point and shoot. My Ricoh gr2 is a point and shoot. In general, it’s just a compact with an integrated lens.
The 1/3” sensors are quite a bit smaller than the ones in the new iPhone, yes.

That is a steal. Once upon a time I bought the original x100 for $400 when the S came out. It was a fun, if flawed, camera. I think pretty much all the issues I had with it were fixed in the V - hope you’re having a good time with it.

You can probably get one of these or similar over there for a reasonable price.
I bought it more or less on a whim, not expecting to use it a lot, and now it's my go-to because it's just so damn convenient and takes a really decent pic.

awful EVF. the RX100 with pop up EVF is the minimum as to what I'd consider "usable" for an EVF, even though it's still tiny. panasonic should have just left the EVF off and added a tilt screen, which somehow they still didn't manage by the TZ200 came out.

Yeah it is pretty crap, but it's good enough when you need it.
Other than that, I'd be hard pressed to fault it.
Personally I prefer the fixed screen, but I know a lot of people like it.
The one on my big boy camera shits me, because it tilts but I can't flip it right around to protect it while I'm out with it.
Hopefully one day there will be a page dedicated to That One Perfect Camera That Suits Everyone.

One possible option: You can try finding OG Fuji X100 for 300eur, and it's going to be one hell of a camera for the money, but it's also horrendously slow and it has no phase detection AF. It's pretty great image quality for the price though, and it does nice colors. So, this advice has three caveats:

For the price of accepting those downsides, you'll get image quality that goes way, way over your average <=1inch sensor pocket camera. I don't think it's something to aim for first and foremost, but it might be something you might want to keep your eye on.

Just paid for the rx100 mk1 in very good conditions, will recieve it this week finally !
paid 160€ for it, very clean condition and comes with handgrip + magnetic filter holder.

I’m so pissed at myself. My grandmother bought a little nikon p&s pocket camera she took everywhere in the last 5 years of her life, and i was annoyed bc i went throough hell to get her on an iphone, so wtf did she need that little thing for…. I dont know about that. The image is soft if you peep and you have to play around with it and denoise a touch and add grain to get it good, but thats because of the meh lens. The actual build quality of these cameras is good. I wouldnt knock them until youve held one. I got a pretty beat up one and its still so solid. It doesnt feel like a cheap camera and it doesn't feel like some children's toy. The only problem I have is my zoom rocker is not as smooth anymore and is a bit sticky but the actual zoom mechanics are so smooth it doesn't really matter. My camera is beat to hell and not looked after and it all still works. I am looking after it now to see how many years I can get out of mine. I also have an olympus em5 so I have some frame of reference of what feels quality.

It's the DMF focus mode not AF-S where it stops constantly adjusting focus.
My rx100 mk1 Also says that it's v.2 lol
all i saw on the internet was v1.2

I went from a rx100iii to an Xperia phone and then to a Fuji xe4. The RX bricked itself 2 months while still in warranty so i don't have too much experience but the files did need a lot of work before looking their best.
The Xperia was nicer and with lightroom built in made for some of the best workflow i ever had, but it was noticeably slower .
The xe4 is a good middle ground with me picking the jpeg's over editing the raw's 80% of the time. Plus it has a better focal length with the 27mm pancake lens. In truth all the tracking / focus modes and what not's were wasted on me.
