Your first instinct is to call one of the objectively more pressing matters but you shake away those feelings.
You promised after all.
You dial your mother, preparing for the barrage of shrill questions. Surprisingly, she doesn’t respond instantly, you cautiously put the scroll back to your ear.
“RETARD-!”
“SON-”
“PIQUI-!”
Three women’s voices assault your poor sense of hearing.
“You are on speaker sweetie, Chari and your grandma are here,” your mother says.
“I-”
“What the fuck were you doing?” your sister, Charisa, decides she deserves the first word. “You better be saving someone’s life to take this fucking long to answer!”
“Actually-”
“He’s a huntsman,” your grandma, Maria, goes next, “he HAS to save the innocent, otherwise I’ll put Life up his ass. If he was doing a girl, Death is coming along.”
“Eh-”
“Lay off him,” your mother, Akihime, defends you, “at least until he can tell us how Grant is.”
Or not.
“Grant is fine.”
“Deets idiot!” Charisa offers her patented charm.
“Well, there was a little issue at a faunus rally and Grant had to intervene to make sure things didn’t get out of control.”
“Good.” Maria believes that’s what is expected from a professional huntsman. “How did it go?”
You spot someone lighting a car on fire down on the street. “Not very well.”
“What does that mean?” Akihime begins freaking out. “Picaro, what does that mean?!”
“Calm down ma, he is a professional, I’m sure he’s just busy.”
“Yeah Akihime, a huntsman needs focus,” Maria backs you up as usual. “Not that you’d know anything about it.”
Akihime clears her throat. “So he’s part of a bigger operation?”
“I guess. I do know he isn’t all alone, there is another huntsman and he looks really experienced, his name is Qrow Branwen I think.”
“Qrow Branwen?” Akihime’s voice sounds cold. “Did you say Qrow Branwen?”
You feel a chill coming up your spine, you’ve never heard her like that. “Uh, yeah? You know him?”
“No, I do not.” Her voice sounds normal again.
“How good did you say that guy is?” Maria continues. “Never heard of him.”
“Dunno, he’s old.” For active huntsmen being over thirty is rare.
“So, strong or a pansy.” She hums.
“And…” Some fear can be heard on Charisa’s voice. “Are you okay? Y-you better not be out there or I’ll beat your ass.”
You can’t help but laugh. “I’m at my hotel.”
“A-and how’s Coco?”
“She’s with me, we’re all okay.”
“T-that better not be bullshit!” Charisa’s relief comes through no matter how hard she tries.
“Make sure you tell your brother to call.” Akihime says with clear finality.
‘Is she gonna end the call? How? She usually goes on and on,’ you think. ‘Nah, it can’t be-’
“Well, I’ll leave you be,” she says. “Remember to NOT get involved, stay in the hotel.”
You can hear her handing the scroll to someone else. “What’s up her ass?” Maria asks.
“Maybe she’s on her period? If she has those still, sksk.” Charisa chuckles.
You continue some more pleasantries before having to hang up and move on to other matters.
