“But have you seen any of them recently?” Abel asked.
You were about to say no, but Abel seemed to be able to tell what you would say from the look on your face.
“I’m sure you just missed them when you broke into our parents’ place.” you said, trying to make sense of this whole thing. “You mentioned something about her past workplaces?”
Abel nodded. “I asked about her, and everyone seemed to remember her working there. But, get this, they don’t have any of her info on file. No paper trail, or anything. It’s as if she’s a rumor, or an urban legend or something. No one has any actual proof that she ever worked there.”
You frowned at him. That didn’t make any sense. There’s no way that she could’ve gotten a job without giving them her contact info at least. And you’re pretty sure that your sister’s never done any shady, “under the table” stuff.
But before your imagination could get further and further away from you, a sudden realization blew away any other thoughts that you might have had. You looked at your clone brother, narrowing your eyes accusingly at him.
“Have you been spying on her? Vic said that she thought someone was following her around lately, so I thought that it must have been the Chameleon.”
Abel looked away, and that was all the confirmation you needed. He was hiding things from you.
“You haven’t been staying on campus like you said you were this entire time, have you? You’ve been looking into my sister.” you said, taking another step towards him, unsure of what you even wanted to accomplish.
Abel turned back to face you, his eyes full of steely resolve. “Look, I’m just trying to protect this family.”
As soon as the words came out of his mouth, you knew them to be true. Unsurprisingly, you saw a lot of yourself in Abel.
“And if Vic isn’t a part of this family, then I don’t know who or what she is. Could be a threat to Pete, Cindy, Rich; everyone, really.”
You were about to reply, but the doorbell ringing drew everyone’s attention back to the living room. You weren’t expecting any other visitors. You and Abel exchanged a cautious look.
Seeing as how no one else was moving, Rich looked as if he might get up to answer the door himself.
