Before the green garbed hero arrived, before the princess’s power arise, before the blade of evils bane, before the kingdom of Hyrule waned, there were kings and queens, soldiers and spies, all battling to keep the kingdom alive. They fought the king of evil’s might, but were all cast down into deepest night. Without their bravery no land would there be, for the hero in green to have set free. So come all ye listeners and harken to me, while I spin thee a tale about the heroes in mail. The common solider whose blood was spilled, to buy time for the hero with the iron will. Welcome all to what I currently plan on being a short Quest (subject to lengthening if enough interest is shown) about the fall of Hyrule. You will all take on the role of Matthias, a solider in training, as he attempts to survive the initial fall of Hyrule. Stay on your guard as Matthias is not the hero of Hyrule and will often be outmatched by his opponents. So play smart and stay alive, or don’t and spend the quest perspective hopping as the destruction of Hyrule plays out. Without further ado let’s begin.

You’d been training for three months now and the constant repetitive exercises had been burned into your muscles so that every action happened automatically without having to think. “Good, now come at me lets see what you’ve learned”
You advance on the instructor as your mind quickly considers how to approach this.

The instructor shifts to the side dodging your thrust and knocking it to the side with his own spear in a parry, then quickly following up with a thrust toward your own head. But you are already backing away and the attack falls short. You circle your instructor now, throwing out the occasional jab toward his head, chest, abdomen, and legs. You continue these attacks for awhile will the grumbles and jeers of your fellow trainees grow in volume and number. “C’mon Matthias get in there!” “Quit being a coward and fight!”
The jeers continue until, sensing a shift in your instructor’s stance you strike. Another thrust towards the face, the same one you opened the fight with, but this time as the instructor begins his parry you follow along with his motion letting him brush your attack aside and using the added momentum to bring the butt of your spear around in a quick swing towards his head. Your attack connects with aloud clack as the butt of your spear collides with the instructor’s helmet sending him staggering sideways. Seizing this moment you jab your spear between his legs, tripping him up and sending him tumbling to the ground. You close up to your prone instructor and prepare finish him when suddenly his spear leaps up at you. You quickly parry the blow but fail to notice as his kick strikes the back of your leg, forcing you down on one knee. You stab at the prone man, but he’s already rolling away. As you both rise back to your feet, Your instructor holds up his hand for you to stop.

See that everyone, he approached his enemy with caution probing his defenses and taking his full measure before striking. Because of that he was able to give me a pretty hard knock upside my head. If I were a lesser fighter, I would have ended up skewered on the ground by his spear. But he made one mistake in losing his caution in the push for a kill. Remember this everyone, a downed and cornered opponent is the most dangerous foe you will face. Not every strike has to be killing blow, sometimes a lesser wound given time to bleed will end your opponent.”
With those words of wisdom, the instructor sends you back to the crowd of other trainees and calls another forward. You receive a few pats on the back and congratulations from the others as the instructor faces off against another solider. “Nice going Matt, but uh if it’d been me out there, I would’ve put you on your ass in two seconds flat.” You recognize the voice of your best friend and pain in the ass…

>>5642144 Your friend's name is now Jozoll
"And how would you have done that Joz, because if I remember right, the last time we sparred you were the one on his ass." You respond.
"That was only 'cause I'd pulled a muscle that morning. No if I'd have been out there I wouldn't have let you pranced around like you owned the place. I would've tackled your scrawny ass and put you down fast."
"Care to test that strategy after drills today," you goad.
"Nah I wouldn't want to hurt you too bad before the Pig Sticker training tomorrow. I want to see how well your wait and see tactics fair against the Snorts."
"Jozoll you're up," one of the other recruits nudges Joz.
"Good, now watch how a real solider does it" Joz says to as he trots into the circle.
The fight starts immediately after the instructor gives the signal to start. Joz charges forward spear leveled at the instructor bellowing a war cry. You can almost hear the instructor sigh at the obviously reckless attack and right before Joz reaches him, the instructor sidesteps his charge. Surprising both you and the instructor though Joz mirrors the dodge throwing himself sideways in a mean shoulder check that sends the instructor tumbling backwards. Joz skids to a halt and turns quickly into another charge at the now downed instructor. With a roar Joz thrusts his spear down at the instructor only for his roar to be cut short into a wheeze as the instructor parries his thrust, plants his feet in Joz's gut, and using the momentum of Joz's charge against him heaves Joz up into the air. There is a loud thump as Joz lands hard on his back, knocking the wind out of him. In a moment the instructor is back on his feet and has his spear hovering above the gasping Joz's throat. "You're dead Jozoll" the instructor says as he lightly taps Joz's throat with his spear, before helping him back up.
"So that's how a real solider does it huh?" You mock Joz as he staggers back out of the ring.
Still trying to catch his breath Joz simply shoots you a glare as he moves to sit down in the shade.
The rest of the recruits' skirmishes against the instructor pass without much incident with a few more ties and a lot more losses for your fellows. As the day ends and go to stow your armor Joz approaches and winces slightly as he throws an arm around your shoulders “I don't know about you but I could use a drink to take the ache out of my back. “The Snorts don’t scare me, but if you’re that scared of them, I’ll let you be.” Joz says with a smile as he leaves you to stow the rest of your gear.
The next morning when you see Joz on the training field he is visibly hungover. “So, how was the Milk Bar last night?” you ask.
“I didn’t go to the Milk Bar,” he moans clutching at his head “The place was packed and I couldn’t get in. Apparently, some famous Scrub bagpiper was playing that night. So, I went Baz’s instead. Some bragging barrel maker there was challenging anyone who would listen to a drinking contest, I won, but now I wish I hadn’t.” He says with a wince as the instructor bellows a greeting to you all.
“Alright recruits today is the day you learn how to fight the most common threat you’re likely to face in your life as a soldier of Hyrule.” With a sharp tug the instructor pulls the sheet off of a large iron cage in front of you all. Inside the cage startled by the blinding morning light was a single red Bokoblin. “The red Bokoblin is the most common type of Bokoblin and fortunately for all of us, the weakest as well. That doesn’t mean that it can’t still wipe the floor with an unprepared grunt. Bokoblins are opportunistic cowards on their own.” The instructor says as he strikes the side of the cage with his spear, causing the Bokoblin to shift as far from him as possible. “If you stay on your guard, you should easily be able to take them down.”
The instructor turns to the larger cage next to the one with the single Bokoblin and pulls its sheet off as well. The three red Bokoblins inside flinch at the light as well but instead of cowering like the singular Bokoblin, all three of them press toward the instructor and reach at him through the bars and rattling the cage. “In a group however Bokoblins gain confidence and are much more ferocious. That confidence and ferocity makes them predictable though. The best way to handle a herd of charging Bokoblins is to accept their charge with a <span class="mu-g">Phalanx</span>, and once their charge is broken and they begin to pull back, press forward, <span class="mu-r">Encircle</span>and finish them just like we practiced.

ContinuousQM !!lVJpPHWlL0z ID:kzMJ4gD5 Sat 22 Apr 2023 18:12:53 No. 5643208 Report >Here are the rules of combat Each round of combat is determined by three numbers Your <span class="mu-r">Power</span> <span class="mu-b">Wisdom</span> and <span class="mu-g">Courage</span> Your current personal amounts of these are <span class="mu-r">2</span>, <span class="mu-b">3</span> and <span class="mu-g">2</span> <span class="mu-r">Power</span> is the manifestation of not only your strength but of your speed and general athleticism it determines how well you will perform physical feats as how much damage you will do in combat. <span class="mu-b">Wisdom</span> is not only how much you know but your know how as well. It is book learning, street smarts, and prowess all rolled into one. In combat is determines how many dice you roll of <span class="mu-r">Power</span> and <span class="mu-g">Courage</span>. A force multiplier if you will. <span class="mu-g">Courage</span> is your toughness physical as well as mental. In combat it reduce how much damage you will take. Every round you and your enemy will clash comparing <span class="mu-r">Power</span> against <span class="mu-g">Courage</span> taking the difference as damage. So for instance your damage as it stands now would be <span class="mu-r">2</span> and your damage reduction would be <span class="mu-g">2</span>. Wisdom comes into play when selecting a Stance of which you only have two right now. <span class="mu-r">Aggressive Stance</span> and <span class="mu-g">Defensive Stance</span> stances can do many different things but on a basic level they act as a force multiplier using your <span class="mu-b">Wisdom</span>. Take the <span class="mu-r">Aggressive Stance</span> for instance it takes (<span class="mu-b">Wisdom</span>/3)+1 *rounded down* d <span class="mu-r">Power</span> and adds it to your <span class="mu-r">Power</span> stat Using your stats if would do((<span class="mu-b">3</span>/3)+1)d<span class="mu-r">2</span> + <span class="mu-r">2</span> for a minimum of 4 and maximum of 6 damage Formations are similar to Stances but are often stronger and don’t rely on <span class="mu-b">Wisdom</span>, but they require a sufficiently large number of allies trained in that formation to work, they also supersede any Stance so you can’t pick a Stance and a Formation at the same time. The Phalanx Formation for instance uses the average stats of all its members (as most formations will) then adds 1 to their <span class="mu-r">Power</span> and 2 to their <span class="mu-g">Courage</span> before rolling the formation’s stats as such <span class="mu-r">Power</span> = (The number of members in the formation) d<span class="mu-r">Power</span> + <span class="mu-r">Power</span> and <span class="mu-g">Courage</span> = (The number of members in the formation) d<span class="mu-g">Courage</span> + <span class="mu-g">Courage</span> I'll make a paste bin for this info later

The formation begins to fan out to <span class="mu-r">Encircle</span> the remaining Bokoblins but it isn’t necessary the creature’s morale was broken and they were fleeing back into the cage. Dragging the unconscious Bokoblin back into the cage the instructor heaved its limp form back in amongst its terrified brethren and shut and locked the cage.
“Well that was easy,” Joz says rather loudly to you.
“Yes recruit Jozoll,” the instructor snaps, “that was easy but you won’t always be facing three dumb, unarmed red Bokoblins. You’ll be facing hordes of armed and better led Bokoblins, for as you know Bokoblins come in different colors with blue ones being twice as tough and smart as red ones, and black ones who’re three times as tough as blue ones. Pray to the Goddesses recruit Jozoll that you don’t run into a black Bokoblin.”
“Now Bokoblins aren’t the only threat you’ll face out there. One of the deadliest foes you’ll face out there is the Moblin.” The instructor says as he pulls the sheet off of a massive cage. Inside shackled to the floor was a massive red Moblin easily twice the size of the average Hylian. “Moblins are obliviously larger and stronger than any Bokoblin as well as being slightly smarter on average. Now the best way to bring these things down is-“ The instructor doesn’t get to finish his sentence as with a earth shaking bellow the Moblin rises up on its feet and with a tug rips its shackles out of the cage’s floor. It then proceeds to let out a loud trumpeting noise from its snout and with mighty heave put its hands on the roof of the cage and tears it free with a loud screech of metal. “Rr-ready.” The others respond unable to keep the fear out of their voices.
Forming a semi-circle your group approaches the Moblin spears at the ready. Following Joz’s example you bring your spear up in a stab at the creature’s face connecting with its jaw and knocking out one of its teeth. The rest of the formation follows suit striking at the beast, with one recruit delivering rather solid blow to the Moblin’s knee making the monster howl in pain.

You feel pressure all over as if you were being squeezed by a vise, it’s making it impossible to breathe. Your lungs start do burn and your ribs start to ache under the pressure. Just when you can take it no more the pressure dissipates and there is light and air again.
The other recruits groan with effort as they haul the Moblin’s body off of you. “Matt, you okay?” Joz’s voice asks you.
You look down to examine yourself. You’re covered in blood, but is the purplish red of the Moblin blood not your own. You sit up testing your limbs which all appear to be in fine working order. You look over at the Moblin’s body to see the broken haft of your spear jutting out of the monster’s back. “I think I’m good” you say as Joz helps you to your feet “Maybe a little sore around the ribs from the damn thing landing on me but good otherwise. Where’s the instructor?”
Joz’s face turns down cast as he points to the instructor’s prone body being tended to by a few of the recruits and a man in full soldier armor “He didn’t make it.”
“Trainee Matthew?” a deep voice asks from behind you. You turn to find another man in full soldier armor with serious expression. “Yes, I am him,” you respond.
“I am Captain Laro, of the castle guard. As I understand it from your fellow trainee’s, you saved all their lives after Instructor Ko was killed. You seemed to be the only one who kept a clear head throughout the whole affair, so I want to hear if from you what exactly happened here.”
As you recount the events to Captain Laro you find yourself reflecting on what exactly had happened and your role in it, as such your report to Captain Laro comes off as…

Looking forward to seeing how a 'low-power' character is going to fare. It is with humility and not a little sadness that your recount the previous events to the captain. You tell of Instructor Ko’s noble sacrifice to buy time and how you only managed to slay the Moblin thanks to the aid of your fellow trainees. The captain nods along as you speak, turning everything you say, over in his head. When you finally finish the captain speaks “Yes, that pretty much matches what the other trainees said.” Laro places his hand on your shoulder and gives it a squeeze. “Don’t weep overly much about instructor Ko’s fate I suspect he was glad to have given his life to save his trainee’s, especially one as talented and humble as you. Now why don’t you two get some rest you’ve had a hard day and no doubt need it.”
The captain’s words along with the adrenaline wearing off make you realize just how tired you really are. You and Joz head off to the barracks. Joz immediately goes to bed falling asleep as soon as his head hits the pillow. While you go to wash the Moblin blood off before finally succumbing to the need for sleep yourself.
The next few days go by slowly as a new instructor is found for your batch of trainees and your training resumed. You notice that most of the other trainees treat you differently now. Some treat with awe and almost reverence and the others treat you with a deep respect. Joz is still Joz though “Hey Matt, I’m thinking of starting a fan club for you. You’ve got enough bootlickers around here that we could probably get them polish your armor, shine your boots, and wipe your ass for you.” He treats you the same as he always has, which is honestly a nice break from the respectful distance the other trainees seem to but you at.

Joz flashes you a smile before continuing “Instructor Lak has given me the authority to conscript someone to help me with my assignment and I thought who better to aid me than our Royal Protector. So, drop your gear and join me at the stables, I just got you the rest of the day off.”

Joz’s eyes bulge for a moment. “Eight siblings? Damn your parents don’t fuck around… or maybe they do.” He laughs.
“We’re a big family, I probably have at least one relative in every town that makes its living on the Eastern Sea.”
“And here I thought you were some sort of soldier or official’s son. Damn, that kind of ruins things. I was hoping you’d be able to read the invoice the instructor gave me so we’d know what we were picking up.” Joz says waving a piece of paper he’d pulled out of his shirt.
“Let me take a look,” you snatch the paper from his hand “One of my uncles taught me a little bit about words and numbers when I helped him on one of his trade runs.” Looking over the document you slowly scan the page. It was a rather simple document with only the item and the amount due on it, rather similar to your uncle’s ledgers. “We’re getting thirty spears, five sets of armor, and a whole lot of horseshoes.”
“Well I’ll be damned, I didn’t know you were a scribe. Quick what’s the sign say.” Joz says pointing at a sign on the corner of a nearby building. You end up reading every sign from there to the smithy as Joz continues to point them out.
Finally arriving at the smithy, you and Joz dismount from the cart. Following the sounds of metal being hammered. You find the smith and his apprentice finishing a horseshoe. With one final hit of the hammer the smith backs away from the anvil while his apprentice picks up the shoe with a pair of tongs and dunks it into a bucket of water for a brief moment then sets it into a box piled high with other horseshoes. It is then that the apprentice, a wiry young boy, notices the two of you standing there and rushes over to greet you.
"Hello there, masters how can I help you."
"We're here to pick up a delivery for the garrison" you say flashing the invoice at the boy.
The boy nods once and heads over to his burly master who is currently leaned up against his anvil wiping sweat from his face with a dirty rag.
"Master, some men from the garrison are here to pick up there order!" The boy practically screams in his master's ear "They've brought an invoice!"
The smith accompanys the boy over this time and proffers his hand for the invoice. Squinting hard at the paper he slowly runs his finger over the words and numbers mouthing them as he does so. Speaking in a carefully modulated voice the smith turns to his apprentice and says "It's the ones with the "G" branded on them should be 3 boxes of spears, 3 boxes for the armor, and a barrel of horseshoes."

Joz's face splits into a wide grin "Alright, so I know you've got that big job tomorrow so, booze is out of the question. Buuut I know a place where we can relax and it's not too far from here."
The two of you board the cart again and Joz takes the reins. The place he takes you is indeed not far, but neighborhood you end up in might as well have been a continent away for how different it was. The nice cobbled streets turn into muddy paths as stone turns to dirt, the path narrows and the buildings go from sturdy stone structures to leaning wood shacks that devour the light leaving the place perpetually shaded.
As doubt starts to gnaw at you, Joz halts the horse in front of a wooden building in much better repair than the others around it. The building stands straight and doesn’t lean over like the others and its wood planks have been painted a dark green color. Following Joz’s lead you step down carefully off of the cart and on to the wooden porch jutting out from the front of the edifice. As you do so, you notice a wooden sign hanging over your head depicting a rather attractive young lady in a towel pouring steaming water into a wash tub with the words “Madame Ith’s” inscribed on the bottom. As Joz pushes his way through the door a wave of warm, humid, and sweet-smelling air greets you. Inside a large woman in a rather revealing dress, smiles at you from the front desk.
“You brought us to a brothel?” you mutter out the side of your mouth and into Joz’s ear.
“Not exactly,” he mutters back.

“Oh, and who is your friend,”
“This is Matthias, a close friend,”
“Let me get a look at you dear,” Ith says as you both draw closer. The woman looks you up and down in way that makes you feel naked before her. She locks eyes with you for a long moment before she blinks and shudders “What intense eyes you have Matthias, their the kind a girl could get lost in if she’s not careful. And Jozy what have they been feeding you, you’re nothing but skin and bone.” The woman says leaning over the desk to cup Joz’s face in her hands and examine his features.
“They feed me fine missus Ith, it’s all just gone into muscle,” Joz says rolling up a sleeve to expose his bicep. With coo missus Ith squeezes Joz’s bicep with her rather meaty hands.
“Oh my Jozy whatever they’re feeding you, keep eating it. Now.” Ith settles back in behind her desk “What can I help you boys with today?”
“I’ll let my friend here decide, we really came here for him anyway. Though this is his first time at a place like this so, you’ll have to explain how this works.” Joz says as he reaches down to his Rupee pouch and begins counting.

“Excellent choice darling. Twenty Rupees please.”
After fishing a red Rupee out of your pouch, Madame Ith shows you and Joz to a changing room, where you swap out your training fatigues for a simple towel round the waist. You are then brought to a room, heavy with the scent of perfumes and oils, and told to lie down on one of the tables. With a clap of her hands and a call of “These two gentlemen need attending to ladies.” Madame Ith departs and three women wearing towels that just barely cover them enter. The experience is satisfying to say the least, a pleasure for the senses, as with smooth gentle movements oil is applied to your back, arms, and legs before your muscles are soothed and gently massaged, undoing knots and relaxing tensed tendons. If there weren’t such enjoyable sights to be seen you would have closed your eyes and possibly fell asleep.
In all too short a time the message is over and you’re wiped down and your clothes returned. You wished you could have stayed just a little longer and maybe had a bath, but duty calls and you and Joz have been away long enough. You bid farewell to Madame Ith and she tells you to “Come back anytime dears,” with a wink.
>With your aches and pains taken care of and your muscles relaxed you feel rejuvenated. You’ve gained 4 temporary HP You manage to arrive back at the barracks with no one questioning the length of your visit to the smithy, and this time you conscript the help of your fellow trainees to help you unload the bulky cargo of equipment. That night as you drift off to sleep, for once not plagued by any sore muscles, you ponder what tomorrow will bring, tomorrow, the day you’ll attend to the King of Hyrule.

You wash your face and don your freshly polished armor, before snagging and apple from the kitchens and heading out to Hyrule Castle. The streets of the castle town are dead, save for the merchants setting up their stalls for a day of haggling and trading, and the bakers, who had been up hours before you to fill the streets outside their shops with the smells of baking bread. Arriving at the castle gates you are halted by the guards who demand you state your business.
“Trainee Matthias here to see Captain Laro.” You say and one of the guard’s face lights up in recognition.
“Ahh yeah, the captain said there’d be one of you coming this morning. Well come on in.” The guard says issuing you through the portcullis’s wicket gate. The man leads you a little way in before grabbing a young servant boy out of a crowd of servants busily bustling about the castle and having him take you the rest of the way. The halls of the castle twist and turn as the boy leads you down them at a speed that you’d call a sprinting walk. You almost have to jog as the boy moves through what you assume are servants’ passages to take you to your destination. Soon the boy leads you through a door out into a well lit and carpeted passage, and stops in front of an open where you can see Captain Laro stands behind a desk with several other men standing across from him. The servant boy gives you a little bow before taking off back the way you’d come up. As you approach the door you overhear Laro speaking.

“Trainee Matthias sir, you requested me?”
“Ah Matthias, yes, well come on in don’t stand in the door like a spy eavesdropping. He’ll walk you through what you’ll be doing. Now you all have your assignments get to it.” Everyone in the room gives Laro a salute before making for the door.
Out in the hall sergeant Korus stops to look you over. “So, you’re the kid the captain was talking about. Terrible stuff about what happened to Instructor Ko, but the way I hear it you performed well under pressure. No opportunity to gain fame or money. You’ll slay no monsters and rescue no damsels. But this job is a safe one, you’ll be slain by no monsters and stabbed by no bandit, although you might be slapped by a damsel. Plus, your pay is regular and decent, you’ll always have a warm bed to sleep in, and you’ll never miss a meal or go to bed hungry,” he laughs slapping his protruding belly.
“Then why did the captain choose me? He doesn’t think I’ve plateaued, does he?” you ask worry creeping into your tone.
“Hey, relax kid your way too young to be retired to guard duty at the castle just yet. No, if I know the captain, he’s testing you. You performed well on the battlefield, kept your head on straight, but now the captain wants to see how you perform on the social battlefield. Can you keep your feelings in check, do you respect authority, can you follow orders, that sort of thing. I bet Captain Laro has something bigger planned for you kid, you just gotta jump through some hoops is all.” The sergeant says giving you a reassuring pat on the shoulder. “Now, anything else?”

And if he steals it anyway let him, just report what happened to the captain or me when your shift is over and we’ll get you another one.” He says understanding lacing his words “Now if two nobles start fighting don’t move without the captain’s or the king’s say so. The last thing you want is some noble challenging YOU for his honor because you touched his skin or tugged too hard on his expensive shirt. The only other time you’re allowed to move is if there is a threat to the King or his family. Other than that, just stand there, swipe a few snacks off the platters when no one is looking, and watch the nobility make asses of themselves.” The sergeant chortles and gives you a slap on the back as the two of you finally enter the throne room.
The grand space was bustling with activity as tables, benches, chairs we’re being brought in and set up by a steady stream of servants. Floors were being swept and mopped. Windows were being washed. And every bit of wood or glass or metal was being polished to a mirror shine. Over the din of preparation Korus leads to a spot nearer the throne.
“You’ll be here, stationed nearer the royal guards and the royal family, right next to the higher nobility. Don’t worry about the whole ‘higher’ thing just treat them like I told you and you’ll do fine. In fact, the high nobles are probably the most well behaved of the lot, seeing as they’ve got the king literally breathing down their necks.” He lets out a little chuckle and takes you back out of the throne room. “That’s all there is to it. Located in the center of the castle on the ground and second floors, it is conveniently armory adjacent and filled with row upon row of bunks. Not too dissimilar from your trainee barracks in the castle town. At this hour of the day, they are mostly deserted save for a few servants cleaning and making beds, and the soldiers with night watch duty either winding down after their shift or already asleep in their bunks. The sergeant introduces you to a few of the one still awake playing cards. “Matthias, these lazy bums have the easiest job at the castle, night watch. Meet Basso, Obi, Ozi, Joli.” Korus says gesturing to the each of the four men seated around a table littered with cards and tankards. “Easy my ass,” Obi says lolling his head over his shoulder to look at you and the sergeant. “When’s the last time you tried living like a vampire sergeant, up all night, sleeping all day, and seeing precious little of the sun.” “Last month when I was on night watch.” Korus shoots back “You see kid, we all take a turn at night watch, we’ve got enough men for three rotations so each man serves four months of night watch a year, and right now these sorry sacks are up.” “Not for much longer, thank the goddesses.” Mumbles Obi. “So, who’s the new blood sergeant, he looks a little young.” Ozi says turning away from his cards to look you over. “This is Matthias, he’s helping out with security for the ceremony today, just some extra protection for the court. I’m showing him around a little bit before his shift starts.” “Oh, you’d take him down here to show him the Boards,” “No, I just came to show him where our slackers sleep,” “Ah c’mon sergeant let him try his hand at the Boards,” Basso begs “It’s a tradition for new bloods.” “I’d rather the kid not have a broken nose before the ceremony,” “Oh he won’t break anything, not if he’s quick,” Ozi says reaching under a bunk and pulling out two planks of wood attached to form and L shape “You just gotta go from one end of the room to the other without stepping on a board and getting smacked in the face. Easy right.” “Easy? Yeah except for the part where you blind fold the kid and spin him dizzy until he can’t stand up straight. The thick air is heavy with the smell of musty pages and dust, and despite large windows letting in the sun, the spaces between shelves are dark and stifling.

“Only a little, my uncle was a merchant, he taught me how to read from his ledgers, so I only know simple words like cloth, fish, iron, grain.”
“Tell me boy, did he also teach you numbers?”
“He taught me two plus two is four and that four minus three is one.”
The archivist’s other eyebrow raises in surprise “Well boy being able to do that puts you head and shoulders above the rest of the layabouts here. You know we’re surprisingly similar boy I too started out as an illiterate commoner, and it was my love of stories that drove me to pester the local magistrate until he took me on as an assistant and taught me to read. I simply devoured writing of any kind while I was there and noticing my passion for books and writing the magistrate forwarded me here to help the old archivist manage this massive collection of knowledge. It was a dream come true, all the books I could ever wish to read at my finger tips and nearly all the time in the world to read them in,” the archivist lets out a longing sigh, “Although now-a-days I find I don’t have the time to enjoy reading as much as I once did. Everything seems to take longer than it used to and I find it harder and harder to focus on the words on the page these days.” The Archivist falls silent and seems to shrink as he contemplates his own words.
Looking at the archivist now, you don’t see an irritable old man fed up with the ignorance of those around him, but rather an old man saddened and not a little bit frightened by his own failing body and mind. That one day he will be unable to do thing that he loves. In a moment of compassion for this old man you reach out and touch him breaking him from his reverie. “Um Wha-what were we talking about? Oh yes you said you liked hearing stories about heroes from the past, did you? Well I’ll tell you what, come by the archives again when you have some free time and I’ll show you some books on Hyrule’s heroic folklore.”
“Thank you, archivist,” you say bowing your head slightly.
“Oh, its archivist Jirron and think nothing of it.” Jirron glances over at sergeant Korus who’d been waiting by the door. “I think I’ve taken enough of your time boy, best get back to your duties before Korus over there falls asleep.” With that the archivist leaves you heading into the maze of books while you catch up with Korus.

“Hm, what” the sergeant blinks the sleep from his eyes and stretches before looking out the archive’s massive windows. “Well I don’t think we’ll have time to visit the kitchens we better head up to the throne room now.” The sergeant moves at an accelerated pace up through the halls of the castle to the throne room. As you move along you notice more and more servants filling the halls congesting them with traffic and slowing your progress slightly. It is then that a thought strikes you.
“Sergeant are there any secret passages for getting around the castle quicker?”
Korus glances back at you and shakes his head. “Not that I would know of, the only ones I might know of are servants’ passages. If there were any secret ways around the castle the only people who would know would be the royal family and a few others like maybe captain Laro or the royal guards.” The way forward clears some what of servants and you push through.

It had changed a lot since you'd left to tour the castle. Benches, tables and chairs now filled the room segregating it into neat rows. Huge draperies dangle off the walls proudly displaying the sigil of the royal family. A massively long red carpet trimmed with gold had been rolled out leading all the way from the entrance to the throne. Many of the castle guards had already taken up their positions and we're now lazily watching the hurried last minute preparations or chatting with other nearby guards. "Okay Matthias take up your position and settle in. Remember what I told you, stand still, be polite, and only move when ordered. I’ll be positioned by the door at the start of the ceremony, but once things are settled and going smoothly, I’ll patrol around and check in on you. Captain Laro will also be here schmoozing around with the lesser nobility and running security checks, so he’ll probably check in on you at some point as well. Good luck kid, see you in a bit.” With a reassuring slap on the back sergeant Korus leaves you to your duties. You assume your position and adopt a relaxed guard stance, watching the servants put the finishing touches on the throne room by placing vases large and small full of flowers all over the place. It isn’t long before everything is in place and most of the servants file out to be replaced by what you assume are those here by invitation, those with common or lesser blood brought here by the grace of the king, they are dressed in the best they can afford, well made and clean if slightly drab clothes. They shuffle in quietly, nervous and a little unsure of themselves. A well-dressed footman directs them to stand to either side of the carpet close to the door. Next to enter are the lesser nobility, knights, unlanded nobles, then barons and lesser land owners. A herald announces their names and titles as they pass through the door. Their dress is fine, colorful, and well made, but without much flair with only a ring, some earrings, or a fine necklace or broach to adorn them. They enter, some with pomp and grace, others laughing and chattering amongst themselves. They fill in next to the invitees further down the chamber. Next come the higher nobles, they enter one at a time waiting for the herald to announce them and all their titles before proceeding with composure and grace to the far end of the hall and taking up positions close to the throne. They are richly adorned in luxurious fabrics, well embroidered and bedecked with jewelry.

The man is tall with a slight gut that only seems to make him more regal not less, his face is creased with wrinkles and his black hair and beard are speckled with white. He stops a few steps from the entrance and turns to offer his hand to his wife, the Queen as she enters the room. She too gives off a regal bearing, but it is countered by a maternal warmness that makes you think of your own mother. She smiles brightly, her bright blue eyes sparkling as she takes her husband’s hand. She does not show the weight of rulership as her husband does, her hair is still a fair blonde and her skin is unblemished and glowing with vitality. The king and queen are followed by their children, four boys and three girls though you notice that one of their sons is missing. The three boys in attendance, although they are all old enough that you should be thinking of them as men, follow close behind their father each of them attempting to mirror his proud and noble bearing. The three girls, one full grown women, one on the cusp of womanhood, and one still a child, follow behind their mother trying to display her same warm regality.
The king and queen take their seats atop their thrones at the end of the room, their children huddle in close around them with the royal guards falling in and setting up to either side of the throne. The rest of the nobility shuffles closer in a loose semicircle starting at the throne and radiating outward. The herald, now positioned next to the king calls out. “The king will now hear from his petitioners, Mayor Zissin of Lanteria you may now make your petition.” As the herald speaks, servant quietly shuffle in with wine and small snacks for the attendees, and the room seems to relax a little, your fellow guards easing their stances slightly with some accepting snacks as servants walk by. As the petitioners are heard and court drags on, you find yourself…

Connection to royal family established. > Permanent + 5 to all detection/inspection checks As the petitioners make their requests you keep your head on a swivel carefully looking over the chambers watching for threats. Despite sergeant Korus’s words about taking it easy, you just can’t shake the feeling that something is off. Taking a deep breath, you crane your neck upwards to stretch and that’s when you spot it, movement up in the rafters. You freeze your eyes searching the darkness above. Standing in the rafters above the throne is a strangely dressed individual, wait not one individual, two. Both of them garbed in dark form fitting cloth wraps around their heads and faces to conceal their identity. You also notice a strange eyelike symbol emblazoned on their chests and odd identifier for some assassins. You casually roll your head to the side in another stretch and spot two more figures in the rafters above the entrance to the chamber. Your heart starts to beat faster as you carefully scan for additional people in the rafters, but find no more. Four people, two to block the entrance, two to cover the king. If they wanted to, they could easily take out the king before you could so much as shout a warning. So why hadn’t they?
The thought gives you pause as you consider your options, it is then out of the corner of your eye, that you spot the youngest princess waving at something. You follow her gaze up to the rafters. She’s waving at the assassins? To your surprise one of the assassins waves back, something fishy was definitely going on here.
“How’s it going kid,” sergeant Korus’s voice in your ear nearly makes you jump out of your boots “Woah, sorry kid didn’t mean to startle you, everything alright?”
“There are assassins in the rafters.” you hiss out of the corner of your mouth “Right above the king.”
Korus directs his gaze up to the rafters and squints into the darkness for a moment before his eyes grow wide and his face blanches. “Okay kid, stay calm and act casual they haven’t pounced yet, which means their waiting for something. Wait here and I’ll notify the captain.” Korus says, a slight quiver in his voice. Moving as calmly as he is able, Korus walks over to the ring of onlookers around the king, to captain Laro, who you only now notice is among the lesser nobles and knights dressed not in his armor, but a finely woven vest and coat. You watch as Korus leans in and whispers into the captain’s ear. Laro doesn’t even react, merely whispering back to Korus and sending the sergeant away. Korus makes his way back to you, some color returned to his cheeks.

Good eyes by the way, I never would have known they were there if you hadn’t pointed them out. Its weird though I’ve stood guard in this chamber for many years and looked up at the rafters and seen nothing every time. Are those foreign visitors the reason?” Korus muses to himself.
“Foreign visitors?” you ask.
“Yeah didn’t the captain tell you, it’s the whole reason court is being held today there are-“
Korus cuts himself short as a young page hurries into the room and approaches the throne. “I beg your forgiveness your majesty, but some foreign dignitaries have arrived for you sire.” The page says bowing low before the king.
King Rham nods gravely and turns to the nobles, “We will continue with the petitions and matters of the court later. It appears our foreign guests have finally arrived.”
“That is not all my lord,” the page says and he whispers something into the king’s ear. The King’s expression betrays not one emotion, but after the page finishes, the king rises to his feet. “Show him in,” he says his eyes fixed upon the entrance to the throne room. The page hurries out accompanied by the herald and Korus quickly leaves you to return to his post. The nobility and other guest clear a path to the king filtering out around the throne as the royal guard move forward to line the approach to the king. You don’t have long to ponder who the foreign guests might be as the herald returns and loudly announces the new arrivals.
“Lords and Ladies of the court I present to you all The Lord of the Gerudo people, King Gannondorf.” A murmur ripples through the crowd as through the door steps a giant, muscled man easily half again as tall as you, with well-tanned skin and a fiery mane of red hair. He’s bare chested with a green and gold embroidered tunic skirt covering him from the waist down. He is modestly adorned with jewelry and even his crown is a simple gold circlet around his head. He strides into the room a cocky smile on his face, his every step oozing confidence as he looks around the room like some one would examine a house they were going to purchase.
Entering behind the Gerudo King is a contingent of Gerudo Guards, all women by the looks of it and all of them larger and more muscled than you. They march in gilded armor gleaming and spears in hand, their faces concealed behind masks and veils. You grip your own spear tighter as the follow their king into the room, but stop just after the entrance and stand their ground.
“King Rham,” Gannondorf speaks, his voice is deep but his tone is light and casual. “Sorry for the delay, we were held up at the border.”

“Ack, diplomats are not my way, I prefer to settle matters in person, man to man, king to king.” He says with a dismissive gesture. “I wish to see those who pursue treaties with me, to look them in the eye and measure their worth.” The King of the Gerudo’s locks eyes with King Rham and there is a long and tense moment as the two stare each other down. The moment is broken by Gannondorf who turns first, and lets out a loud peal of laughter “Ha, the Hylian King is a man of iron will I see. Good I can trust such man to be true to his word.”
“We Hylians value honor and integrity,” King Rham responds “We also value honesty and openness, so tell me King of the Gerudo why you have brought armed soldiers into my home.”
Gannondorf glances over his shoulder at his guards. “Fear not my intentions King of Hyrule. I wouldn’t have brought any guards, but my people’s concern for me is great and while I believe in YOUR good intentions my people still wished for me to be protected by a few guards.” He says a pleasant smile creasing his lips.
King Rham nods “Very well, but I would have them disarm while they are in the throne room. For my people also care very much for me and would feel threatened by so many armed individuals so close to their king.”
“I understand completely,” Gannondorf claps twice and half of the Gerudo hand their spears over to the other half, and the doubly armed contingent of guards leaves the hall. “Better? Now I do hope our two peoples can come to an agreement over this little border dispute. I would hate for more blood to be spilled between two such honorable peoples” The Gerudo King says bowing his head solemnly.
King Rham holds his hand up to stop the Gerudo King. “We can, but such matters should not be discussed in this manner. We will treat with you privately, in the council chambers, but we have a tradition in Hyrule to feed our guests before discussing business with them.”
“Fantastic, ha,” Gannondorf lets out another bark of laughter “I haven’t’ eaten since this morning and I am famished.”
The King nods and calls out to the master servant waiting in the hall. “Master servant serve our guests.” The Master servant nods and nervously sidles out the door past the unarmed Gerudo women.

Conversations are short and often whispered with glances being thrown toward the Gerudo king at the high table, who is undoubtably the loudest in the room. He tears into the meal before him eating messily and laughing loudly the nobles next to him put on brave faces, but are in obvious discomfort while King Rham maintains his cool comportment. Around the high table the royal guards keep a tight grip on their spears and when you glance up you can see the individuals in the rafters glaring intently at the Gerudo King, their presence here making much more sense to you now.
“Take a break kid,” you jump once again as sergeant Korus places a hand on your shoulder. “I know you haven’t eaten since this morning and you’ve got a long shift ahead of you, so take a break and get a bite to eat.”
“I’m not really hungry, besides I don’t think I could relax with all this going on.” You answer Korus honestly.
“I know kid, but a soldiers got to know when to take a break, because you never know when your next one might be. We’ll be okay without you for a little bit, we’ll eat in shifts, besides I doubt the Gerudos will try anything just yet, their king is having too much fun.” He says with a nod toward the high table where Gannondorf lets out another laugh.
Heeding the sergeant’s advice, you take a seat at one of the invitees and petitioners tables and force some food and water down your throat. You nearly choke though when one of the large Gerudo women sets down nearby, unhooks her mask and begins devouring a plate of fish. It seems that the Gerudo are eating in shifts as well.

The mood in the room slowly lightens, or at least grows a little less tense as wine lessens inhibitions and loosens the tongues of the guests. Conversations become louder and freer, and there is finally some laughter that doesn’t originate from the Gerudo King. It is when this lighter atmosphere settles in, that you notice the two kings leave their seats and rather quietly slip out of the throne room, departing with only a few guards each.
“Looks like the treaty negotiations are finally getting underway,” a voice over your shoulder says. You turn to find captain Laro standing there in his finery, a cup of wine in his hand. Watching the kings depart. “Everything going well Mathias?” he asks.
“Well enough sir, all of this is a little overwhelming though.”
“Yes, this evening has been a little overwhelming for everyone.” Laro says shooting a glance at the Gerudo guards,” By the way well done on spotting our guests in the rafters, not many would have spotted them, and I’m sure they’d be interest to know that you saw them.”
“Thank you sir,”
“I saw you talking to that Gerudo woman earlier,” you flush a little with embarrassment “She say anything to you?”
“Just some grunts sir, it felt more like I was talking at her than with her.”
“Hm, tight lipped are they, well that’s to be expected we aren’t exactly on good terms with the Gerudo.” Laro pauses to take a sip from his cup. “Hopefully our kings can come to some agreement though. It would be nice to not have to worry about our southern border.”
“Captain come here there is someone you just have to meet,” a feminine voice calls out, Laro sighs heavily and places his hand on your shoulder. “Well I have to get back to it. Keep up the good work Matthias I knew I made the right choice bringing you here.”
Laro’s words fill you with pride as he departs. The feeling sustaining you as afternoon turns to dusk and the two kings finally return, although you can tell something is wrong. “It is when I could take your entire kingdom.” The King of the Gerudo’s words come out like ice and their effect chills the entire room.
King Rham leans forward his words matching Gannondorf’s for their iciness “Is that a threat?”
“It’s more that a threat, it’s a promise” the last word hisses through Gannondorf’s clenched teeth. He pulls away from the king and addresses the whole chamber with his next words “People of Hyrule, long have you oppressed the Gerudo, long have you denied us, long has been the night freezing in the desert lashed by its cruel winds, long has been the day baked in the harsh sun and dying of thirst, long have YOU Hyrule denied us lands that once gave my people LIFE. The is a long moment as the two king match wills, then the King of Hyrule raises his voice “Guards remove the Gerudo from my castle and these lands.” The royal guards begin to advance, spears lowered toward the Gerudo King.
“Death it is,” Gannondorf says. Then in a movement so quick that you cannot see it Gannondorf strikes Rham so hard, the king is sent flying back across the hall through the high table, through the throne itself, and it’s the wall at the back of the room so hard the stones crack. There is a moment of utter stillness in the chamber, then everything happens at once. The royal guards charge Gannondorf and the newly rearmed Gerudo guards move forward to defend him. The Gerudo King waits for neither though and with incredible speed blows past the advancing royal guards and strikes at the King of Hyrule’s first son who barely has time to draw his sword. The normal castle guards nearby are split, some advancing to engage the Gerudo guards, some moving to assist the royal family fight off Gannon, while others move to block the door to the chamber. All the while a panicking crowd of nobles, servants and petitioners screams, cries, and moves every which way in the chamber.
In this moment of utter chaos you decide to…
> Move in to protect the royal family their safety is the priority here. > Engage the Gerudo guards and prevent them from backing up their liege > Join the guards at the door and block the enemies escape from the throne room. The Fall begins…

ContinuousQM !!lVJpPHWlL0z ID:kzMJ4gD5 Mon 08 May 2023 05:35:29 No. 5658100 Report The royal family, they are the priority here. You skirt around the outside of the big melee in the center of the throne room, the Gerudos having given up on protecting their lord, they were forming a <span class="mu-g">Defensive Ring</span> instead, to withstand the <span class="mu-r">Encirclement</span> of guards closing in around them. Above the clash of spears and screams of pain, you can here Captain Laro giving orders. “Keep tight around them don’t let a single one escape!” He bellows. Around the shattered remains of the high table, the higher nobility were scrambling to get out of the way as the eldest prince, now technically king, clashed with Gannondorf. The Gerudo King lets fly with a series of <span class="mu-r">Relentless Blows</span> at an icredible speed, but the prince adopts a <span class="mu-b">Fluid Defense</span> that brushes aside the strikes as the come in. Almost like a dance the two fighters shift across the floor the prince giving ground to stay ahead of Gannondorf’s strikes. Then suddenly one of Gannondorf’s punches slips through the prince’s guard and connects with his chest in a blow that would have caved in his rib cage had he not already been dodging out the way. Seeming to ignore the hit, the prince’s dodge turns into a spin that ends with a vicious slash, the seems to catch the Gerudo king off guard and gives him a cut across his bare chest. Not letting up for a second though Gannondorf resumes his attack pressing the prince harder, even as guards begin to arrive to assist.> Gannondorf took 5 damage > Eldest Price took 9 damage (good rolls for the prince) It is at this moment you arrive to the fight, behind Gannondorf on the side where the youngest prince and the two younger princesses are. The youngest prince has already drawn his sword and is beginning to advance on Gannondorf, while the princesses stand horrified, stunned at the sight of their father’s broken body slumped against the wall. Suddenly from the ceiling, the two figures you had seen before, drop down and land with catlike grace. One of them rushes immediately to the king while the other restrains the youngest prince. “Hold your grace,” he says “That man is too powerful for you, take your sisters and get out of here.” “No, my brother needs help, and my father needs avenging.” The prince says struggling against the man’s grip. “You’re too important to be endangering yourself like this my prince, leave the Gerudo king to us and get your sister’s out of here.”> Help the strange man restrain the prince, he’s right, this Gerudo king seems far too powerful to face head on like this. > Back the prince and charge Gannondorf from behind, you have to relieve the eldest prince. > Ignore the argument and organize the arriving guards, you stand a better chance of facing the Gerudo king or escorting the royals away if you’re coordinated.

The guards give you a strange look, wondering who this young kid is giving them orders, but their training and commonsense makes them listen and begin to coalesce around you. Meanwhile, the eldest prince continues his fight against Gannondorf. The King of the Gerudo continues his <span class="mu-r">Relentless Blows</span> against the prince, each strike coming harder and faster than the last one, but the prince stays calm, his <span class="mu-b">Fluid Defense</span> keeping the Gerudo King at bay.
Suddenly, there is a loud shout as, breaking free from the strange man, the youngest prince presses forward in a <span class="mu-r">Reckless Charge</span>. Gannondorf sneaks a glance over his shoulder taking note of the charging prince. The eldest prince uses this lapse in concentration to deliver a thrust the scrapes by on Gannondorf’s ribs. The attack refocuses the Gerudo King and he delivers a quick kick to the eldest prince’s abdomen forcing him back and buying himself some space as the youngest price arrives and lays his sword across Gannondorf’s back leaving a nasty gash, but the Gerudo King does not flinch nor does he cry out in pain. Instead, you see a wicked grin form on his lips as he performs a spin and quick back hand strike the catches the youngest prince full in the face. The prince’s head snaps back violently and he drops to the floor dead, his face a caved in ruin quickly filling with blood.
“No, wait!” the eldest prince shouts as with roar of rage the middle prince charges Gannondorf, ramming his sword into the Gerudo King’s abdomen. At this Gannondorf grimaces in pain and lets out a roar of anger. He slams both of his hands together on the middle prince’s head and with a wet crunch smashes the prince’s skull in a spray of blood. Gannondorf begins to disentangle himself from the middle prince’s body, but the dead prince just won’t let go it clings to the Gerudo King sensationless fingers clutching tightly to his sword. Even thought it had cost him his life the prince had <span class="mu-b">Forced an Opening</span> for his brother.

As gently as you dare you take the middle princess by the arm and lead her away from the carnage saying “This way my lady, we need to get you out of here.” The princess, still in shock at seeing three of her close family members killed in front of her moves slowly her eyes locked forward in an unseeing gaze, but she doesn’t fight you and you hand her off to the other assembled guards and turn back to collect the youngest princess.
Meanwhile the fight between Gannondorf and the eldest prince reaches its climax. With Gannondorf impeded by the middle prince’s corpse, the eldest prince takes the opportunity given to him by his brothers sacrifices and closes in for the kill with an <span class="mu-r">All or Nothing Strike</span>. The Gerudo King is not done yet though with all of his strength he yanks the sword out of his side and the middle prince with it and throws all of his weight into a final <span class="mu-r">Clash of Power</span> with the eldest prince. There is sound like thunder clap as the two collide, Gannondorf catching the eldest prince’s sword on his gold bracers. For a moment the two seem evenly matched, then with a roar Gannondorf forces his arms down with the prince’s sword and headbutts the prince. Their skulls collide and the prince staggers back clutching his head stunned. Gannondorf seizing on this moment attempts to finish the prince off, but the four strangers slide in between the two and <span class="mu-g">Hold at All Cost</span> the line between them and their prince. Gannondorf brings both of his fists down on the formation and the strangers catch the attack on their knives. One of them looked over his shoulder and called to the prince. “Go my liege take your sister and get out of here, we’ll stall for you.”
“Right, be careful he’s a dangerous one,” the eldest prince says before taking the eldest princess by the arm and heading for the chamber’s entrance.

Deciding that you have no more time for niceties you simply pick up the huddled princess in your arms and head for the exit with the rest of the formation and the middle princess.
On your way to the exit, you see the big melee in the center of the room had yet to be resolved. A third of the Gerudo lay dead on the floor but a good half of the royal guard, and most of the regular castle guard were dead as well, with the Gerudo still holding their <span class="mu-g">Defensive Circle</span> against all attackers.
You arrive at the chamber entrance a little after the eldest prince and princess and find them speaking to sergeant Korus and his men at the door. “Sergeant, I want you to hold this door at all cost don’t let the Gerudo or their king out, understood. “Understood my lord,” Korus says giving the prince a bow, “But you should know by lord, the Gerudo have infiltrated the castle with other troops. We’ve heard fighting in the halls and a few stragglers have reported coming into contact with Gerudo assassins.”

Sergeant Korus, hold this door for as long as you can, but don’t make martyrs of yourselves get out when things become untenable.”
“Yes sir,” you and Korus say in unison giving the prince a salute. As you follow the prince out of the throne room Korus gives you a pat on the shoulder. “Good luck kid, looks like the captain’s plan for you has already panned out, you’ve gone from castle guard to a member of the prince’s entourage in a day.” He says a with a nervous chuckle. The prince takes up a combat stance to face off against the woman, when you hear more footsteps. Two more Gerudo round the corner behind their companion and you and the other guards shift to support the prince. You ready yourselves to waiting for the Gerudo to charge when one of them pulls a fist sized object off of a belt around her waist and rolls it down the hall at you. The ball sparks and smokes as it rolls and while you stare in confusion at the object, the prince recognizes it almost immediately.
“Bomb, get down!” he shouts throwing himself backwards and dragging the eldest princess down with him. You and the men in formation scatter to clear out of the way of the bomb, every man diving in a different direction.
> I need one anon to roll me a 2d3+3 (Wisdom check contested by enemy wisdom) to see if you take damage from the bomb. As a side note I’ve made wisdom a little better by giving you an extra die every 2 instead of 3 wisdom it won’t help you now but will in the future should you invest in more wisdom

You, the eldest princess, and one of the soldiers are in one of the clear hallways safe from danger. The eldest prince, the queen, the youngest princess, and two soldiers are in another hallway but are not safe from danger, as to you your surprise you see four Gerudo sprinting down the hall toward them. Turning from the fight with the Gerudo, you flee grabbing the princess and pulling her with you as you jump down into the pit. While the fall isn't too high you landed at an awkward angle and stumbled forward directly onto the rubble from the collapsed ceil and end up almost skewering yourself on a splintered piece of wood However the falling princess also stumbles on her landing and rams directly into your back pushing you forward onto the piece of wood The splinter pierces your abdomen And goes all the way through to poke out your back the pain takes your breath away and you're left gasping as the princess steps away from you, horrified at what just happened. Above you can hear the final cry of the other guard as he is killed by assassins. You desperately suck in a breath of and almost black out from the pain but you managed to turn your head and wheeze to the princess "Run" The princess stands there horrified for a moment at the piece of wood protruding from your back but then either her instincts or better senses take hold and she flees down the hall away from you.
The middle princess turns the corner at the end of the hallway and disappears from sight, just as the 3 assassins drop down into the hole. Impaled on a piece of wood your back to them and your spear fallen from your hand, you are not much of a threat. A hand seizes the rim of your helmet and yanks your head back, the motion jostling the wood in your gut and making you gasp in pain again. Forced to look up you find yourself staring into the face of masked Gerudo. At any other time, you might have admired the woman's beautiful green eyes, or the way her dark orange facemask complemented her tanned features, but now all you can see in those beautiful green eyes, is cold mercilessness. Who knew death could be so pretty. You close your eyes and brace yourself for what's next, waiting for the cold kiss of steel on your neck. But it doesn't come. You open your eyes again and find the eyes staring back into yours have lost their chill. An expression of pity now fills them.
One of the other assassins barks something in Gerudo and the one holding your head releases it and responds back in the same tone. The whole troop then heads off down the hallway in the direction the princess left from leaving you alone, impaled on the wooden stake, and bleeding out. You were spared by the enemy but your ordeal is far from over.

Wonder if there is any source of fire around in case we can sear the wound shut, but considering this is a gut wound, meaning a severed artery might be possible or a pierced organ, our chances are grim either way. What is the general tech level of this setting? What about medicine? I don't know much about the series.

A wound like this is too much for deal with for a young soldier alone.
If there is no one around to help, like a healer, things would be tough. Other soldiers or servants can stop us for bleeding more, but more than that would be a miracle. Doing it on our own is difficult not just for how tired from combat we are, but also because of likely increase blood loss and not knowing what exactly the stake pierced inside. We also have another wound made by the combat.

Clasping your hands, you begin to pray, starting with the ones your mother taught you as a child, short, simple prayers that you repeat over and over again as if they were a mantra. Eventually, your prayers turn to personal pleas to the goddesses, begging them, pleading with them to save you, not for your own benefit, but to save middle princess and to fulfill your duty. As the prayers continue to spill from your lips, each one more heart filled and desperate than the last, you can feel your strength waning as the blood drains out of your wounds. You become dizzy and your legs start to buckle. Finally, legs shaking, you collapse settling on to the stake your lips still murmuring your pleas to the goddess
Then to your amazement as you sag onto the stake, it snaps the loud crack The sound forces your eyes open again and a strange feeling washes over you a feeling of relief, a feeling of clarity, a feeling of strength? Questions fill you head, did the goddesses save you? You push such questions aside for the moment, there is still a chunk of wood embedded in your gut, but it does not bother you as it once did. Your legs do not wobble as rise to your feet once again. You are alive by the grace of the goddesses you are alive! But you are not out of danger yet enemies still stalk the hallways of the castle and your duty to the royal family isn’t over yet. The middle princess may still be in danger. Picking your spear off the floor You lumber off after the princess and the assassins, hoping that it isn’t too late.
> The power of the goddesses has revived you. While they haven’t healed your wounds, you feel a strange force giving you strength +8 Temporary Health +1 to all stats for the duration of the blessing. > Find your way to the Archives check auto-pass. Aren't you glad you went on that tour. Recalling the tour sergeant Korus took you on, you forge a quick and short path to the archives. When you arrive, you find that you are alone in the library with no sign of the prince, the princesses, their guards, or even their Gerudo pursuers. Cautiously you walk into the paper jungle of books, it quickly becomes clear to you that the Gerudo have been here, books are scattered on the floor and between two of the shelves, you find a dead guard and recognize him as one who you’d entrusted the eldest princess to. Suddenly you hear a cry of pain further along the shelves and you race to find its source. You follow sounds of muffled thumps and more painful cries and shouts until turning a corner you find the archivist, lying of the floor badly beaten, with a Gerudo assassin standing over him with her back to you.

“I don’t know where he is,” the old man sobs raising a hand to defend himself “I was hiding when they came, I didn’t see where they went. Please let me g-Uoh.” The Gerudo kicks the archivist and curses at him.

Between his slowness and the speed of your Gerudo pursuer you only make it to the next set of shelves over before you realize you won't shake her.
Deciding to stand and face her, you shove the archivist forward telling him to keep going while you face off against the assassin. Hoping to catch her off guard you charge back at the Gerudo. She meets your charge by leaping off the ground kicking off one of the bookshelves and spinning in the air becoming a <span class="mu-b">Leaping Dervish</span> of blades. Ducking just under her blades you thrust up at her. Your spear finds flesh cutting a neat gash in her side, just above the hip, but at the same time the assassin delivers a vicious kick to your face. Your helmet absorbs half of the blow, but you are still sent reeling backwards heads spinning and stars dancing in your eyes. You can taste blood in your mouth and the energy you felt before starts to wear off. your previous wounds flare to life again and the pain is almost sends you collapsing to the floor, but you grit your teeth and face the assassin once more. Although now she seems a little less eager to pursue, contenting herself with maintaining contact with you and waiting for backup to arrive, while the archivist limps further away.
> 6 damage dealt, 8 damage received. 1 Health remaining You contemplate trying to run again, but with your wounds hindering you once more you doubt you’ll make it, but you like your odds against the Gerudo even less now than you did before you’re just no match in a one on one fight with them. You've protected the princess and the Royal family as best you could but you've lost contact with them and their fate is now in their own hands. Your more sensible side says, but what of your duty as a soldier of Hyrule, to stand against any invader to your last breath? your pride screams back. Your more basic instincts tell you to run, hide. Your brain tells you that surrendering would save your life but the pride in your chest burns at the thought of it. Then your body makes the decision for you and gives out, forcing you to lean against a nearby bookshelf to avoid collapsing. You can't go on not like this you finally decide and throw down your spear. Bile builds in your throat as you spit out the words “I Surrender”. You are filled with surprising relief like a weight has been lifted off your shoulders. I surrender, I give up, my fight is over, who knew that such simple words could grant so much relief. With those final thoughts, the last of your strength gives out and you collapse to the floor, blacking out before you can feel the impact.
In the blissful darkness you hear strange noises, the shuffle of feet on stone, the creaking of hinges and the clanging of metal, voices reach your ears but they are muffled and distant although you do make out some of the words.
“He's badly hurt will he make it milady?”
“I don't know he’s lost a lot of blood, I've done what I can for him but it's up to the goddesses now.

The thought worries you, why can’t you move? Then it comes back to you, everything comes back. The attack in the throne room, the retreat through the castle, the ambush in the hallway and your getting injured to help the princess escape, the enemy sparring you and your prayers to the goddesses, going to the archives where you tried to save the archivist then you surrendered and passed out. Did you die? Did you bleed out on the archive floor, or did the Gerudo finish you off? is this death? Your mind reels against such a notion. You can’t die you…

You won’t give up not now or ever until you’ve fulfilled your duties. You force yourself to get up, to rise from the darkness. Your body protests but you will yourself upward and onward out of the darkness.
You open your eyes and find yourself in a dimly lit stone cell. You are lying on a pile of straw covered by a wool blanket. Your weapon and armor are gone and you have been changed Into A simple rough spun shirt and trousers. You sit up and immediately notice, the bandages covering the cut in your side and the hole in your gut. Your muscles there are tight and tender, but you rise to your feet on unsteady legs using the wall to support yourself. You head over to the bars of your cell and peek out into the hallway. Using the dim light that comes into your cell through the small slit window high on in the wall, you see that hall is empty as is the cell across from you. You call out in a hoarse voice "Hey, is anyone there."
You hear shuffling in the next cell in the and a hand reaches between the bars. Holding a polished piece of metal reflective enough that you can see the face of the person holding it.
"You're alive, thank the goddesses. How do you feel Matthias?" Says the oddly stubbly face of Captain Laro.
"I'm... okay sir, but why are you, here what happened?"
"After the Prince and the Royal family left the throne room I knew that we would not be able to hold the Gerudo, so I pulled everyone back and I escorted what remained of the nobility towards the main gate. We fought our way through the castle and reached the main gate but it was locked tight we were surrounded there and with no hope of escape I surrendered what remained of us and was brought here, but what happened to you, when I saw them bring you in you were in terrible shape, you’re lucky that one of the noble ladies imprisoned here was allowed to treat your wounds. You’ve spent the last week with a fever that only just broke. I’m honestly surprised you survived, what happened to you after you left with the Royal family."
You explain to Laro all that happened. How you acquired your injuries and came to be brought here. When you finish Laro nods thoughtfully and says " I see, you did good Matthias, it's not easy to surrender, but sometimes it's the best thing you can do."

"For now, nothing. You need to rest and heal. I have a plan but it will be sometime before I'm ready to act on it, although with you back on your feet my plans may have just changed.” Laro pauses for a minute contemplating something before continuing “From what I've been able to gather the Gerudo have taken over the castle and the town walls. The eldest prince Jhoran made it out of the castle and has place the capital under siege. It may just be a matter of time until we're free, but the Gerudo must have something prepared, they’re too confident, too calm. If they-” The captain cuts himself off and quickly pulls his arm with the piece of metal back into his cell whispers "They're coming, I'll tell you more later, but for now continue to act sick its best if they don’t know you’ve recovered."
You do as captain Laro ordered and lie back down on your bed of straw and cover yourself with the blanket. A few moments later a servant enters escorted by a Gerudo to deliver meals. When they come to your cell the captain explains that he hasn’t heard a thing out of your cell all day and that you must still be ill.
“I’d be best if you just let him rest.”
Without a word more the Gerudo and servant continue to more cells. When the sound of their footsteps fades away. Laro whispers as loud as he dares to you. “Keep up the act Matthias and pretend to get worse I think I know how to get least you out of here.”
You continue to feign illness for a few more days. Laying on your bed of straw eating little and groaning in pain every time a guard walks by your cell. Captain Laro is taken out of his cell on occasion to be questioned, but the captain explains that questioning is on rather common non-sensitive subjects in an attempt, as he believes to get him to lower his guard. He tells you that he uses such outings to gather information and to pass notes to the servants. On a particularly dark night, The captain whispers to you from his cell.

I've arranged it so that your body should be taken outside of the castle and into the city for burial by a friendly grave keeper. That’s where my aid ends though once you're in the city you'll have to find your own way out. From what I’ve gathered, the city is locked down pretty heavily, but civilians are allowed out during the day. Find some way anyway out of the city. You are a tough and resourceful soldier Matthias I know you can do this. Once you're outside the city get the Prince the papers in those rags. They contain all of my findings about the invaders and their plans so far. Good luck Matthias, I hope to see you again when this is all over.”
You slip on the rank smelling rags and carefully conceal the papers within. Then you try to breathe as little as possible until day breaks and you apply the cool wet bundle of clay to your skin before breakfast is brought in. When the servant and Gerudo approach your cell the captain gags and says, “Ugh you might want to check on the man in that cell he’s been smelling awful all night.” You hear the door to your cell swing open and you hold your breath and try to stiffen your body as much as you can as a pair of foot steps approach a hand touches your forehead and you hear a gasp and a voice say, “He’s dead Vaian,”
“Let me see,” another voice says in accented Hylian and a heavier set of footsteps approaches.

The guard starts coughing loudly and choking out the words “Get that body out of here before it makes the other prisoners sick.” Soon you are bundled in more sheets until you are encased within a linen cocoon. You maintain your stiff posture as you feel yourself carried through the castle. You can feel your heart beat faster as every step takes you closer to freedom. You sense sunlight through the layers of cloth as you are brought back outside of the castle and laid down on what feels like a wooden bed of some sort. You are left there for what feels like hours starting to sweat in your cocoon as the day moves on.
Sometime later slow shuffling footsteps reach your ears and the bed you were laid on begins to move. You are carted out of the castle gates and into the city proper and it is only now that you feel you can breathe freely, letting your chest rise and fall in a normal pattern. When the cart finally stops a strange voice says “You're free to come out now.” The sheets are removed from your body and you find yourself looking at a pale heavy set and bald man with a hunched back, jutting lower chin, and a few misaligned teeth. “Here for you,” The man says handing you a folded set of clothes that look awfully similar to the ones he’s wearing only with a few more patches on them. “Good luck, and don’t get caught, hehehe,” The strange man laughs leaving you alone and returning to his shake in what you now realize is a graveyard. You quickly remove the smelly prisoner rags, unable to stand the stink any more, and leave them with your burial sheets. you don the clothes the grave keeper gave you and make your way out of the cemetery.
With your escape complete it is now in your hands to find a way out of this city. The first thing you do is…

<span class="mu-i">My Leige,
The Gerudo are not as savage of people as I was previously led to believe. they are rather quite civil. None of us who surrendered willingly were harmed and the injured among us were even given medical aid. They are kind and courteous enough to the castle servants and I feel no malice between us. The Gerudo King well seems courteous enough as well, at least he was to me during our conversations. He asked me about my home where I came from and a little bit about my background, what battles I’d been in and my rank in the Hylian army. We also discussed things of culture, like art and poetry their king is a surprisingly good poet although he most enjoyed conversations about hunting claiming it was his favorite pastime in the desert. While he was kind to me, I could clearly tell he enjoyed ordering around the Hylian servants. He was not sadistic, but he clearly enjoys the power he holds over us. It was during this time I also observed that the relationship between the Gerudo and their king is a rather formal one they follow his orders well enough but there was a lack of personal connection between the king and his guards there might be something there, but it would take a better than I man to figure it out. As the Gerudo soliders seem rather strict when in our presence. They don't let anything slip, I have yet to see them sitting around drinking with one another, or laughing, or talking to each other in more than a few terse sentences to give orders. I will keep trying to get them to open up, but talking with them is far different than with ladies of the court. As to the Gerudo’s future plans, they seem content to remain in the castle enjoying the luxuries within, but they remain alert for any sign of trouble. This is strange behavior seeing as they are under siege, I thought that they would but be looking for a way out, discussing possible sally points and the like. I find this most troubling. Their attack on the castle was well planned and executed, I highly doubt that their plans end there. I would caution my liege to move cautiously, plan carefully, and always be on the lookout for possible weaknesses that the enemy could exploit these are dangerous foes and I would hate to underestimate them again.[\i]
You finish reading the report and while you couldn’t understand all of the words, you feel like you understood the basic message. The Gerudo are up to something but what the captain doesn’t know.

As you make your way through the streets, you notice Gerudo guards stationed at the major intersections. They carefully scrutinize the few Hylians out walking the streets and stop to search a handcart that one man is pulling. You do your best to avoid their notice as you head toward the market. Along the way you notice some battle damage that had not yet been cleared away. A door shattered to splinters, the house inside hollow and empty, a trader’s stall burned to charcoal, and a large dried blood stain big enough that the person who made it is likely dead. When you enter the market proper you find it mostly empty except for a few courageous merchants and bold customers, as well as a contingent of Gerudo guards. As you walk between the groups of customers you filter out the mundane gossip and chit chat until your ears seize upon a conversation between to middle aged men with bundles of goods under their arms.
“I was there, I should know. It happened outside my house those poor men fought to the last trying to reopen the gates and the damn Gerudo cut them all down.”
“No that can't be. You said they were all dead before the sun went down but I know I saw groups of them still running around the city after dark.”
“You saw the cowards running away to save their own skin, but all the real soldiers died at the gates.
“Hmph, maybe. Then who were those men who attacked the Gerudo at the well three days ago?”
The two men lower their voices and you have to inch closer and strain your ears to hear the next bit “They were criminals and thieves, I heard they call themselves Rham’s Spirit or something.”
“Really? My friend was there that day and he said, some of the men were dressed in like city guards.”
“So? The thieves probably looted the stuff off a corpse or stole it from the garrison armory in the chaos of the attack.”
“I don’t know my friend said they fought like soldiers <span class="mu-r">Encircling</span> the invaders and cutting them down, like the swine they are.
The other man hurriedly shushes his companion and shoots a glance toward Gerudo watching the square. “Keep your voice down, if the invaders heard you say that, you’d be done for.” The two men begin to scrutinize their surroundings and you, feeling that you’ve gained as much as you’ll get, slip away into the crowd.
It would seem that most of the city garrison died in some attempt to reopen the gates. There were a few survivors who might be hiding somewhere and it sounds like some of them joined a group called Rham's Spirit. The day isn’t over yet you could investigate elsewhere before night falls and the curfew goes into effect.
