I throw all my used LEGO in a heated ultrasonic cleaner when I get it. It cleans them up like new.

This time, I accidentally set the wrong program, and it brought the water up to 95 C. It turns out that some LEGO plastic starts to go soft above 80 C or so.

My poor 8479 is lost forever.
