Thats how it works for franchises. What, you think Mickey Mouse is going to one day turn into a panda? No, he's going to be a mouse forever, though with subtle redesigns throughout time. Just like how Optimus is almost always going to be some variation of a red truck, be it hauling truck, fire truck, or monkey truck.
Though I do think they should focus more on toy details than trying to nail shitty cartoon cels from the 80's.
