Shit was selling so poorly that Mattel was undoubtedly paying penalty fees for not meeting minimum sales, because every single one of their toylines was a failure.

No doubt, Mattel saw the DC license as an investment that they could one day turn around and make up for every bomb, but how could that ever happen when they released pure shit? Even strong movies like Aquaman and Nolan's Batman, couldn't help turn shit around. WB finally had to strip the license away from them, because they obviously weren't going to let go after poisoning the DC brand for over a decade.

Jazwares likely ditched the license. If you've ever looked at licensing contracts, the current licensee get first dibs to re-up. This is why Hasbro usually has announced re-upping their licenses years before the contract actually ends.
Jazwares could have wanted to pay less than they previously had paid, as sales didn't meet expectations. Whatever the reason, the Fortnite company would have started to seek another bid over a year ago, after negotiating with Jazwares. Unlike the drama that /toy/ lieks to believe that happens, licensors do a lot of solicitations. This is why licensing expos and trade conventions exist. It's pretty rare that there's hopeful-licensees banging on your door, especially when contracts like Fortnite/Jazwares' aren't publically known.

Only way the license would ahve been stripped away is if sales were completely shit, and even then, Fortnite would have still have sought out a bid from another company. I doubt this, because Jazwares kept on producing figures all the way til the end without being budget as fuck. See Mattel with DC or McFarlane with Halo, where they cheaped out on the last figures jsut to release them to fulfill all contractual obligations.

Considering McFarlane also gave up the Fortnite license, it points toward the license being too costly for the sales it can actually produce. To note, McFarlane had the Fortnite license for the direct/collector market. It seems no one's picked up this license.

Before you point out that Aquaman made over a billion dollars at the box office, stores like Walmart ordered this shit a year in advance, knowing only about the disappointing sales numbers from Justice League and that Aquaman is/was widely laughed at for being a medicre character.
All they care about is the fact that its a big franchise movie that gets tons of marketing and there's a chance that kids will eat that shit up.

PS, i know all about Peter David's reboot where he basically made him into Namor (and that most people hated that Aquaman became king douche).

I sure don't care, but that's because of how WB poorly manages their properties, creating a lot of apathy with fans, because they don't know what they're doing. They're the reason why Mattel held onto the license for so long creating nothing but shit and failed toylines.

Thankfully McFarlane is creating excitement for the toys again.

They release an animated movie almost every 6 months, if not more. They're pretty popular, given the fact that they've been doing this for the past 20 or so years.
there's also 3 DC live action shows that have been running for years and years.
There was also the highly popular Nolan Batman AND any toy company would have made bank on ANY of the other movies. Despite how bad they are, the Synder Batman, Superman, and JL movies were popular in the theaters. Despite how bad the Star War sequels have been, Hasbro made bank on those (albeit less than the prequels).

Then there was the Aquaman movie that was well received by almost everyone and made over a billion dollars in the theaters.

Lots and lots of shit, yet Mattel couldn't capitalize on anything, because look at this budget crap. Who fucking wants this when Hasbro and fucking Jazwares produces better looking toys?
Nothing but disappointment.
