Never understood the "Star Wars sets have no color" complaint.
Obviously empire stuff wont, because it's all grey in the source material, it's an intentional part of their style. If you look past that though, plenty of stuff has color other than grey. Rebel X, Y, and A wings, Snowspeeders, Landspeeders, Podracers, pretty much anything clone wars, etc. have color on them. Yeah they're not rainbow-vomit with 8 different main colors and 12 accents like Life on Mars or whatever, but white or grey with one or two proper colors as mains is enough to make things interesting.

I made a little micro cafe a while ago that I want to tear apart and make slightly larger. I'm learning Studio so I can have a chance to prototype facades without committing or letting the style get away from me. Right now the real model is L-shaped with two walls, but I plan on building a basic gray wall with utilities around the right corner to look like an alleyway, making it U shaped. On the full model a decent amount of the wall around the opposite corner is glass so I'm trying to achieve a balance between solid and transparent. I'm still experimenting but by simply continuing the red I'm concerned it's too chunky, but adjacent to a flat gray wall it might be okay. I think I've just been working on such a small nugget for so long that trying to blow it out even a little bit diminishes that aesthetic quality and makes me nervous I'm gonna lose it.

Pic related is close to the model's current state, so you can see the scale and amount of glass-vs.-wall. Instead of L-shaped at this size it'll be slightly larger and U-shaped, with the wall opposite the one facing the camera being a back alley dumpster/electric/utilities-type scene. I'll lose the wide viewing angle of the interior by adding another wall but my cafe needs a kitchen space and I don't see another way.

This is stupidly nit-picky but I'm not a big fan of the simulated HVAC on the roof, the sloped tops just don't look right. I'd leave the top flat and maybe use some overhanging slopes on the side to represent the condenser intake you'd stereotypically see on those rooftop systems

That's just the kind of nitpick I like, though. I'll experiment with a few 2x2 and 3x3 forms that are more boxy and incorporate your suggestion. I'm not an expert on HVAC - more just attracted to the utilitarian aesthetic they contribute to - so having some real input is appreciated.

It's a wad of masonry bricks, another wad of castle themed parts, and a ton of minifigures. If you don't have these things already you'll have enough to mess around with after that. Build it normally, and then either enhance it if you like it enough or take it apart and make a village.

If you don't have any classic castle and have a hankering for a big ole new set it is totally fine.

Like a used black knights fortress is about the same price as this. Really depends on what would compliment your other collection more. If I had nothing, I'd start with this, but I'm way too deep into old grey vintage to care.

The police station. I do also have some bricks an old batman arkham asylum set and LOTR sets. Perhaps the Askylum blocks could go well with the castle pieces for building stuff like what some others mentioned about it being good for building in general

Never understood the appeal of building a city out of modulars. You're just shuffling around a bunch of buildings someone else made, not actually designing anything. You're no more involved in the architecture than you are in the old Sim City. Much more interesting and engaging to create your own original buildings.
Plus the modulars are all generally the same 3-story height and have similar footprints, you don't get nearly enough variation for an interesting city. Anything you do with them will just look like a lame version of main street at Disneyland.

What you need to work out is what you want. If you want something modern, a modular and a city display (even if it's just that 1 modular) is probably the way to go.
If you love fantasy shit and want to actually play with your Lego, the castle is top notch. Maybe consider the Blacksmith set too which is about half the price of the castle while having roughly the same sort of footprint and design as one of the Modular sets.
If you want scifi, or you're not specifically tied to wanting a building, do what >>10096490 suggested and cop the Galaxy Explorer

Those were important 2 years. In fact the slopes in Zam Wesell's speeder were brand new at 2002. It's a cutting edge set when it comes to parts selection. Arguably the beginning of Lego aesthetic changing as a whole, away from angles to curved slopes.

I like the initial transition in 2002 to more curved pieces for Lego, giving it a sleek and modern feel but I still adore the more blocky designs as they’re more pure abstract pieces that make it clear what rudimentary Lego is.

Same here. And I usually add more stuff inside the buildings or change them a bit.

I ended up rebuilding the Sanctum into a 16x32 house, since it didn't really look good next to my other modulars and I wasn't that happy with the interior.

Decent reshuffle of parts but it really suffers from not having a rose window, skylight, or other central feature to emphasize the sloped roof. As-is it just kind of compositionally flatlines after the 2nd floor. Something like a balcony with wrought iron detail would really seal the deal.

Thanks. I wasn't sure if the rose window would be too much and make the front look too "busy", since the other floors already have large windows. Worth a try to remake the roof and compare different designs.

I'll probably make the first floor a bit higher as well, because now it's kind of getting lost under there.

I REFUSE to say that the new Ironman helmet is good, its SHIT, There are people who like the new helmet because the smooth faceplate allows Lego to create more variations in Ironman helmet designs. I respectfully disagree since the feature could have been added to a smaller more proportional helmet, I know they have the capabilities in making a better helmet mold than what they gave us Ironman is not even supposed to have a head bigger than the rest of the body and the new helmet mold is even bigger than the one they made previously. The new helmet mold needs to go the way of the Star Wars x wing pilot helmet molds and die off

This is just a spitball sketch so some things might not be possible or look much better in reality.
-Rose window might be too much like you're saying, and with a big one you're losing the nice dormer windows. If you shrink the dormers into faux windows and put them higher up you might be able to keep them and have more room to play with for a central feature. In my mind's eye a ribbon of nougat on the bottom edge of the roof would look good against a railing so I sketched it quickly, but it might not actually improve anything in reality. It depends on where the roof would end based on what you put in this area.
-In architecture generally the heavier-looking elements are lowest in order to imply strength, so while the gray pilasters on the second floor look awesome they might look even better on the base floor. You might be able to preserve the original skinny supports on the base floor by building out an awning. The increased height you plan on adding to the base floor will also improve the general look a lot.
-I split the windows on the second floor to make an excuse to use the gray fender pieces that come in the set. They might not work with your current pilaster setup, and the current big window does look sweet, but some division might generate more visual engagement and incorporate more nougat into the facade when displayed with your other modulars.
Again just spitballing - consider all or none of it. I think regardless what you have is really good and with a few more iterations you'll have something much more feature-rich to be proud of.

Hugely dependent on what kinds of building you want to make. To start, the defining features of your intended constructions might suggest an even or odd stud width; theres a big difference in potential between 4x4 and 5x5 for example. That will inform you pretty quickly on what kinds of geometry you can pull off and what pieces you can use. Then you need to figure out what scale to commit to in order to render those elements into a composition. Without knowing a whole lot I can suggest looking at the Lego architecture series and even without adopting their scale you can still pick up plenty of interesting solutions.

My guess would be that it's because they're not generic ninja; their designs make it obvious that they're from an IP, unlike the old Ninja's of the 90s. Frankly the 1st season (and 1st season legacy) ones are the best since they're basically 90s ninjas. That said, the "Core" ones from that wave at the beginning of the year are pretty nice. Having watched the show now though, I appreciate them more; hated the look of Ronin figs before, now I actually quite like 'im.

The footprint looks smaller than it is because of the 2-stud sidewalks, but that's because 2stud sidewalks is the standard for both the Creator 3-in-1 buildings and the Monkie Kid building side builds. Modulars are the outlier. They're also on old base plates which is fucking goofy when all of the other themes use plates.

I definitely get your point about the side builds, but ironically, the Monkie Kid buildings I mentioned earlier were sidebuilds to big ass vehicles/mechs and the ice cream cart is pretty cute. City has that nice bus in the Train Station set. One of the MK sets has a working minifig scale vending machine with 4 cans in it as a side build, it's fucking awesome. I hate that they bundle all this shit together and don't sell them as separate sets, but shit half the time these days, the side builds are the highlight of the set.

Does anyone know what the part number is for the motorcycles? It's different than the quads or snowmobiles like I thought it would be. I think the minifig is from a Spanish galleon type ship set from the mid to late 90s, not sure what kit the bike is from but I definitely don't have the complete bike.

Exactly my experience. I pick up opened creator sets on facebook for 2 to $5 each. Lots of copies of propeller plane and the shark, lots of space mining mech, the occasional highway speedster, I got a beach house for $8, etc. Kids love em, they're easy for mommy to inventory and resell on FB, and they're extremely cheap for me esp if I'm buying several.

road plates are where it's at, I didn't realize that two studs are the norm. Seems small for the minifigures. That vending machine is pretty cool, they know we would buy the little side sets, they probably package them with the big sets we don't want because they know we will buy them. Haven't really done any of the 3-in-1 yet, some aren't to scale. I am obsessed with making everything "usable" for minifigs.

It's Rock Raiders except with horrible colors, a much heavier emphasis on conflict over mining, ugly rock monsters, and fart jokes.
Or, in short, Rock Raiders for zoomers.
That said I do want to try recreating some of the sets (like the Thunder Driller) with the superior Rock Raiders aesthetics someday. I just need to get my hands on more old gray and turquoise pieces.

Trying to buy the RR Tunnel Transport parted-out on Bricklink and removing like 3 pieces dropped the price by 20+ bucks.
The 4 dark turquoise headlight bricks were upwards of $1.50 each from most stores, and that fucking upside-down magnet holder is like $7.
The magnets themselves were like $2-3 each which is especially inexcusable considering they've been in over 100 sets.
Eventually decided to just take the magnets off the list, along with the little magnet-attached truck that used two of those headlight bricks. I'll find some way to jury-rig the hook without magnet pieces for now, maybe pick them up someday when I feel more like burning money.

A large chunk of sets like the Loader Dozer and Chrome Crusher were made out of fuckhuge pieces like the vehicle base which some people still consider to be one of Lego's most infamous pieces, the two cockpit halves, the giant fenders, the laser, etc.

I don't think Rock Raiders is much worse in terms of juniorization than other lines at the time, massive windscreen pieces have long been a hallmark of space themes and the Rock Raiders cockpit is just that line's iteration of it. The vehicle chassis is less forgivable but I don't mind it much given that it only appears in two sets and lends them much more presence and substance then they'd likely have for the budget if they were purely brick-built.
I'd consider the wall pieces that were ubiquitous in Castle for a period more annoying examples of juniorization than anything Rock Raiders did, plenty of sets were like 70% big preformed wall pieces.

The issue is that 90% of Lego vehicle designs now are just Star Wars ships, and Star Wars has always had awful ship design. Nebulon B frigate and that bomber from Rogue One are just about the only decent ships in the franchise.
Unlicensed themes can still have some pretty great designs, the Cloud Jet and Nezha's Fire Ring, and Galactic Explorer from Monkie Kid especially stand out as good looking.
The last holistically good theme in terms of vehicle design was probably Atlantis, maybe Nexo Knights if you're into the look of it.

Yeah, I add an additional sidewalk out the front of the buildings and then use nu-roadplates and both are then layers onto 32x32 offbrand Strictly Briks plates. Because you're right, 2 studs isn't enough room, so I use it as like, a step up from the actual pavement.
100% they package the cool sidebuilds with lame big sets: Pigsy's Noodle Shop should have been a whole set in it's own right but instead I have to try and hunt down a copy of the giant fucking monkey mech.
Worse still is the Panda Store which is part of the Red Son's Inferno Truck which now goes for about 200% markup. The sticker sheet alone goes for $25 or so and it's entirely because of the store sidebuild.

I'd usually agree but the MK theme has a full-on scatter-shot approach with its sets, throwing in more side builds than usual. It makes sense that they'd include side builds and main builds that appeal to different demographics in the same set in order to have one box appeal to multiple demographics.
And Lego clearly realised how popular the side builds were since they released a set which is comprised entirely of small buildings and frame to put them on and the buildings and the frame are compatible with the side builds from the other sets.

Bricklink sellers are awful in general. Recently tried to buy a 2x3 grey plate and it turned out the seller didn't actually have it in stock, but they did have like 20+ new ones. Instead of just subbing in a 4 cent new plate for a 3 cent used one, they shipped off the order missing a piece and refunded me the 3 fucking cents for it.
As someone who bought a lot of vintage/collectible stuff on eBay before getting into Lego, the customer service on Bricklink is atrocious in comparison. The fact that these bitches act like it's a chore to send you some fucking pictures of a used $100+ set is laughable when every single eBay seller can find the time to take some photos of the $5 junk they just dragged out of grandma's attic.

Also idk if I made it clear buy I meant buying real lego bodies+arms for the uniform and using other real lego parts for legs and heads but those can be any because they don't have to fit a theme specifically e.g. just need to be the uniform colour.

I wanted to buy accessories at ali and brickarms because guns and other cool stuff is not produced by lego at all (not exactly true because the Lone Ranger series and Star Wars to an extent had guns but they are not what I am looking for).

Thanks I just had a look at Brickmania and wow they are so expensive. Quality looks great however way too much at around $40 per minifig. I am definitely better off just finding my own uniform piece(s) then and buying those.

I wonder if there is also a way to "print" your own designs on the bodies like with transparent stickers or something like that. I love when sets have little extra stuff like this. Personally I still have the smaller Hulkbuster and don't plan on getting anything else.

When you create your wishlist remember to input a max price. You only need to do it for special parts, but a generic "bullshit filter" of $5-10 depending on the part cuts out a lot of crap and makes the auto cart feature much more useful.

picrel are some military minifigs I've made
how I did it:
>blank black torsos
>tan arms
>black hands
>tan legs with the middle groin part swapped out with a black one
>accessories bought from Brickarms (vest, weapons) and minifig.cat (helmets, backpacks)
>generic Lego head (the balaclava head was made by Citizen Brick though)

you can get most parts off of Bricks and Pieces (pick a brick now) or Bricklink, I recommend buying cheap torsos with tan arms, as well as cheap torsos with black hands, because you're just gonna be popping off the arms and figbarfing them together

number one thing I hate is that the wings won't say opened if you want to display it with the x. I put a couple of plates under the wings and it fixed it but they really should have designed it to let you choose which configuration. if you open the wings they just fall back down from gravity

there's no rubber band because there's nothing to hold it opened. it is not swooshable with locked wings, you have to hold them opened or they just fall closed again. I added a few plates to jam them opened because I don't care about the closed configuration. it's not that great of a model imo. I built mine without stickers, I'd have preferred a few extra parts rather than stickers

sorry you believe that. dreamcast and sega saturn are the patrician's choice of consoles. saturn has microswitches and dreamcast has 60 fps. I own arcade machines too. I don't really care what you think but fyi I own most everything and just pile it all in a random extra room I have because I felt like it. I have quite a large pile of garbage I don't give a shit about because for a while I would just buy whole lots from people and never resell/throw anything away. the video game market is stupid now so I haven't bothered in several years but I have so much shit it is a problem and I'm embarrassed about the room I just don't drag someone into that part of my house and I have normal video game habits in the common areas aside from the arcade machines...

it looks like it doesn't close so easily unless pushed close. Is it really that loose on your set that you have to use plates to prevent them from closing?

I think that's still a pretty good thing design then.
I can see why it closes, the landing gear is literally on the wings, so it makes sense that gravity will do its thing and shut them up and because of this weird scrissor mechanic, that also means that the upper wings close down.

But I see the problems too, the wings being really weak and wobbly isn't a good look. I wonder what could be done elsehow.

I thought sticking plates under is good enough. I can always take them off if I feel like it. the latest boba fett set is pretty great. it comes with a stand and also has a double L technic bar you can swing out and hold onto the back of the ship so it's swooshable.
