I'd even disagree with that. Magnus looks like it's going to have a lot of the same problems the old MP mold had without the imposing size or quality to make up for it--and get ready for yellowing! And Nightbird's entire lower half is absolute shit, holy hell.

I think the idea is they're still integral to the combiner. Hasbro's Menasor isn't as bad as some 3rd party combiners where the main bot just plugs into a preconstructed frame and is entirely unnecessary, but it's getting close.

But did the armors transform? Did the figures that fit inside the armors also transform? You can't act like the transformation feature doesn't factor into the quality of Ultra Magnus or other G1 toys. That's the main thing that set them apart from other toy lines, in the first place.

Think more about them as characters than as alt-modes. Between the cartoon, comics, and even tech specs cards, most of the Stunticons and Combaticons got just enough characterization to be interesting characters, while more of the Aerialbots and Protectobots didn't get so much. Superion is made up of Silverbolt, Slingshot, and three others who are just "the other guys". And Slingshot's personality is basically just being a dick.

What's wrong with the headsculpt? I kinda like it. I like how the whole concept of Classics wasn't "let's slavishly recreate this character with modern engineering and sculpting" but instead just "what if Transformers happened in 2006?". Each figure has its own fresh identity and style, for better or for worse, but I'd wager that's why, almost 20 years later, the toys are still appreciated in spite of their flaws. Most modern stuff only exists to be accurate, and it's all going to be discarded and forgotten the moment the next marginal upgrade is announced.

The mouth has a weird puppet look. It just looks very primitive, even for the era. Excellion/HotShot came out the year before and besides the stubby forearms and lesser articulation it seems like a more cool and modern sculpt overall.

They are integral to the combiner. There's no combined consciousness without all 5 attached. Menasor doesn't have a proper leg unless the leg guys are attached, it shouldn't be relevant how much of them "shows" unless you're autistic.

Motormaster's shoulder pins can split on some copies, it's a QC thing that seems to have been fixed on later batches though. Also the pegs on Menasors legs for attaching Wildrider and Breakdown are too tight, they stress the ports on them.

The reason may be that in the cartoon we only see Nacelle on Cybertron, where he would have to have a Tetrajet form. He doesn't have a cone head either. Frankly his Timelines toy is super weird, giving him Conehead wings, but a traditional head. I don't think any others have that combo. So how do you respect the "seen on Cybertron!" bit of his one cell appearance, and the Conehead wings? I'm honestly not sure we've literally ever seen a Cybertronian Conehead.

The three names all came before the toys. The novel came out in 2010 or so.
Funpub got the idea of reusing the names for the generic seekers in that one scene, but they forgot the yellow one was already Sunstorm, leading to a series of clerical errors that lead to the creation of Red Wing.

The story I heard for Red Wing is that in one comic they colored Sunstorm too dark and some fan asked who it was, and they made up the name Red Wing on the spot.

A guy with that creation story getting a toy before MtMtE characters is a silly bit of deepest lore to me.

Here's another one for you, the mystery of why they've decided to start giving Magnus a translucent chest recently. The armored up Magnus doesn't use translucent on the original toy, it just has gaping chest holes. Then you realize that's because the diaclone pilots would be sitting in the seats in the cab, which is behind those holes. So you CAN see the windows through them. The robot head tries a similar trick (but fails spectacularly) which is why Magnus has those cold dead hollow eyes: the small robot's eyes are intended to peak through them.

Well, turns out, no! The movie remembered Magnus "should" have windows on his chest, but only in certain close up shots. Rather than get the usual shading metal does, they use a light pink color to imply translucency. It's a real "blink and you miss it" sort of detail-- only really showing up in his big close ups in the Battle of Autobot City, and after the Junkions finish repairing him on Junk. And now you know.

Nah, it was aiming for accuracy and the proportions are all wrong. The front is too short and the windshield is too far forward. It looks like some sort of a retarded compact with a wing than a futuristic sports car. It's just like how every current toy compromises the alt mode for the robot mode, albeit not as much as some others. Thanks for posting a compartison for me.
