Trendmasters had become a sinking ship by 1998. There were promises made of other monsters in the Godzilla movie, but those promises were never fulfilled. Designers sat and waited and waited for concept art to start designing toys, nothing ever arrived. The line had to be padded, so a mad rush to create different sizes, playsets (those stupid head things), etc set in. Panic everywhere. What was supposed to be one six inch Godzilla became two packed with different vehicles. One eight inch Godzilla? Now it's three. Old prototypes had to be repurposed into production figures. If Trendmasters could have made up some monsters and just thrown them in the line, it may have been able to be saved.
Quick, grab the Gamera license. The figures went into production, couldn't get them into stores. Sold 'em online and over the phone. Begged their way into the Animated Series line. Designed the figs, easier to do because Animated = no need to sculpt every single fucking scale on a monster. No store would take them. Invested a ton of cash and time and no one would give it a second look. From there, TM just limped along for two years until it died and Jakks Pacific ate the corpse.
