Indeed. They're among the worst army men I've ever encountered in person, aesthetics-wise at least (quality isn't as bad as some other better-looking soldiers I've had). Got three tubes of them for a maplebuck apiece from Dollar Tree, in spite of (or perhaps because of) their flaws there's something endearing to me about them. They're trying really hard to offer a battle for a buck and it's a decent effort for it.

I think I have a set of these horrible guys.
If not I have some equally bad ones.
I got an order from Ali that I may have paid a total of 3 bux for and ended up throwing them away before my girlfriend could see them.
She didn't mind me spending money on toys - but not horrible ones.

After reviewing my budget, the San Juan Hill idea is out. However, I can get a 1/32 scale Chinatown Gate for a fish tank, Boxer rebels from AiP, and a San Juan battle pack from BMC for half the price. That together with some things I have on hand could make for a good 55 Days at Peking setup.

I have two Stargate rings for example.
One is more suited to 1/18 but I think I got both of them on sale.

I found a broken styrofoam Aztec temple wall while out for a walk 5 years ago.
I have 3 large pieces but forever regret not grabbing all of it.
I have looked in aquarium stores - both in person and online and have never seen anything close to it.
THIS is also neat.

The gate is 7" wide/long, a couple of inches thick/wide, and almost 6" tall. That would scale to a 1/32 or 1/35 French Legation battle, especially if matched against a 1/35 Catholic cathedral from Tamiya or Lemax for St. Joseph's. Union soldiers would make good French sailors while Rough Riders make good USMC.

That tank's been showing up a lot in dollar store fare, seems to be the bastard child of a Merkava and Leopard 2 and comes in many sizes and varying degrees of detail. Mostly they lean toward the small size - this desert camo version is one of the larger ones I've found and you can see how it compares to the classic Timmee M48.

Still haven't seen the set with those aircraft, Walmarts here still stocking the Timmee KOs bucket. Love the stands and the shots with aircraft in general, need to try that more often myself.

Yeah I've been avoiding army men buys on ali so far, except for a set of medieval troops that was pretty good quality, nice poses and reasonably priced. Have to find where I put em and take some pics. Meantime here's their predecessors, a nice set of generic knights packed with great siege accessories that was sold as a bucket set at TRU years ago. Hope the playset buckets make a comeback, my very first army men were all-in-one type sets and they remain my favorite.

Got the next best thing - a pile of these skellies that came in another TRU bucket that was pirate-themed. Not the pirates in pic tho, this predates that bucket when I got some random skellies in a secondhand find somewhere; the pirates were bought from ToySoldiersDepot alongside the shinier of the two cannons.

Nice. Where did you get the bridge? I'm the guy doing Peking and recall that the French Navy held the bridge over the main canal before falling back to the Legation Gate, to then be covered by the USMC.

It's part of the set, as are the rest of the mildly eclectic assortment of accessories. Don't think it'll be easy to track one down, the buckets seem to have been TRU exclusives though at least some of the contents have appeared elsewhere. If you're looking for a bridge there was an American Civil War set of Burnside's Bridge (by Americana?); not sure if it's any easier to track one down.

Checked and those two taper boxes work well for mighty towers. Maybe Lawrence of Arabia can be my archer's tower at the Southern Gate into the Imperial City just past the French Legation leading to the other embassies.

Checked again (plenty of dubs being racked up tonight) and the real question is where to get the dragon cannon for the Boxers? I've got a howitzer pencil sharpener that will be used as Old Betsy, a.k.a The International Gun. Maybe I could use a dowel and whittling skills to scratch-build it.

There is a two-pack of Imperial Chinese dragon cannons from Armies in Plastic without a crew for 15 or 16 dollars. Both are smaller and part of the official Imperial Army, rather than the old antique piece used by the Boxers. I do know that you can get Ottoman Turkish bombards in 1/35 scale for Warhammer and D&D. Maybe there are ways to give it a dragon conversion.

3D print one? Getting trained up on it at work since we'll have one available for public use in the near future, will be making my first print soon - an SA-10 Grumble from thingiverse to fill the long-range SAM gap in my plastic armed forces (will print a smaller one first as a test, larger size later). Might be a dragon cannon model floating around out there.

I've ultimately decided on getting a Wizkids brand bombard cannon online for seven dollars. That's both affordable and should be easy to paint as it's pre-primed and intended for beginners. I know that is more of a scale model thing, but it goes together with /amg/. Plus balsa wood or basswood can work for the dragon's head.

Thanks, yeah the joys of commandeering civilian structures for wartime needs. We had a Sesame Street themed barn that also saw its share of conflict, had to leave it behind in Europe but the garage will see fighting again one day. This circus train is another relic of the distant past that lingers on in storage, waiting for the next war.

We've had our third (or fourth?) round of false spring here, with another wave of cold and snow expected over the coming days. Was nice enough yesterday I went out for some shots; ultimately I only got a couple done, the ground was still too wet and cold for prolonged activity.

After the heavy defeat of their surprise offensive at Totenkopf Pass and the and breaking of their siege of Fortress Emerald in the late stages of last fall (see https://archive.palanq.win/toy/thread/10726950/#10734228) the Tans were saved from further disaster by the onset of winter, putting a freeze on all major operations for both sides. In a display of their legendary resilience and as an exercise in badly needed morale-boosting the Tan special forces have carried out numerous raids and spoiling actions across the front lines, sometimes striking deep into Green territory to snatch intel and wreak havoc.

This particular operation resulted in the successful neutralization of a forward Green air defence and early warning outpost - the crushing victories of the previous fall and the tedium of winter inactivity lulled its garrison into complacency, to their great detriment. Tan helicopters, roaring in at grasstop height and exploiting a sliver of a gap in the Green radar coverage dropped right onto the outpost, annihilating the defenders for no losses of their own. At the time of this image's recording, Tan troops are fanning out to establish a perimeter while a comm uplink/EW station is being established to potentially exploit the success for further gains.

Although the Tan armed forces incurred serious losses in men and materiel during those operational failures, over the winter break they've largely been made good, with fresh divisions raised and new tanks sent out from the factories. This rapid rebuilding has led to some brazen (and potentially careless) shows of force as columns of fresh troops and armor have been spotted manoeuvring through the no-man's lands separating the front lines with blatant disregard for opsec. It remains to be seen if this bravado will come back to haunt them once the fighting season kicks into high gear.

I will. For instance, the order is already in for the dragon cannon. As for the siege tower/rocket launcher, that can be scratch-built from balsa. The rest is already pre-owned or can be gotten easily online (the Boxers and the USMC). On a side note, your train battle gives me some real Dark of the Sun vibes.

That's a shame. Could settle for urban warfare, I remember Thor's old army men page had pages of army men tactics where it was mostly on a patio, brick walkway and stairs. This pic is on the ice-covered concrete ramp from the outdoor ice rink shack I used to work at, framing can make a difference too.

Haven't seen but after reading about it, yeah I get where you're coming from. The Train Raid was conceived with a lot of in-jokes for the circle of friends I had at the time, with multiple factions participating by the end:

You should check out both the novel by Wilbur Smith and the film alike. Based stuff. As for your battle, it looks like you managed to get everyone in on the fight. As for the International Alliance, I'm going with just the USMC via the Rough Riders battle pack from BMC, the Spanish standing in for the Prussian Army, and maybe some turbaned Sikhs from Armies in Plastic for the relief force. Otherwise, my take on the Siege of Peking is going to be very Boxer-centric.

I found the neat little planes in the smallest army man bucket I have ever personally came across. Worth the 5 dollars as it also came with the world's tinniest sand bags and tent.

I remember you posting about them in a previous thread, been watching for it at our Walmarts but no joy, just the other one they've had a while. Did find a bucket set on amazon that has those aircraft, along with a bunch of naval vessels of various types and eras and some additional aircraft.

Was geting a lot of inspiration from the animated film Wizards at the time, still enjoy the theme of having ancient, modern and futuristic warfare all mixed up in glorious battle. Did a write-up of the Train Raid back then (called it Epic War), probably still have it somewhere in my files but key points included:
>the initial attack on the train by the Clones
>a sneak attack by the Red Army detachment getting blindsided by the Afrika Korps and further wrecked by the Wizard Fudde himself
>a furious banzai charge from the castle to rescue the train and the Brits, Canooks and Aussies counter-charging
>the spectacular annihilation of the merc squad and their intimidating but ultimately ineffective supertank
>a bloody melee in the fields before the castle, backed by a cowboy gun line
>the downfall of Wizard Fudde at the hands of the freed Norse Man
>General Veers facing down the megaraptor amid the carnage.

There had been the intention of making a series of campaigns within this setting; a short video inspired by the Halo 3 Monument trailer was made for Epic War 2 but things petered out from there. Perhaps a revisiting will come to pass at some point.

Nice lucky trips and The Wild Geese is also a good novel-to-film adaptation. Again, I'm still waiting for my cannon to come in. The balsa and paint pens I'm thinking of picking up sometime next week. I already have a good collection of acrylics for primer coating the wood (the cannon is again pre-primed for beginners), so it should be easy to do the paintwork. The siege tower and the defenses are next. Then the plastics.

In the battle of the last Tan outpost they lost most of their heavier weapons. Save for two super heavy tanks, and some air assets the tans are back to fighting infantry and light tanks. Perhaps these new dangers could be changed into useful assets. But it will be a perilous for the Tans for some time yet.

I try and do my best to tell a story with the pictures and be entertaining.
And for the mine sweeper he's doing his best to pretend he isn't once again thrust into the middle of a fire fight with no means to defend himself. I don't know if you'd call him lucky, as he never catches a break but doesn't die either. There's usually enough of him left to get patched up and sent back to the plastic blender of the front.

It's a Prusa MK3, either .4 or .6 mm. Bad news on that front though, sometime in the night the thing jammed and this is as far as it got. Jam is so bad we need our makerspace guys from downtown to come fix it. Hopefully I'll get another crack at it soon, already working to scale it up another 40 percent; any bigger and I'll have to print launcher and vehicle separately but we'll see.

I have 1 set of these freezing dudes and now the weather is shifting.
They are bigger than my "regular" guys and am open to suggestions for summer troops that photograph well. (I was going ot get the Canadians D-Day set but the price rose on any of the in-stock sets.

I've printed a fair amount of army men scale soldiers on my resin printer, I can usually fit 6-8 on a single build plate. Haven't tried army men scale vehicles yet, but I just got an FDM printer so that will be a future test.

If you wanted to with a modern look I can recommend the Chap Mei soldier force guys if you can get them. They're a little smaller than your regular soldier. Probably 1/35 scale. But they have fantastic sculpture details. Timmees are a great choice for a jungle adventure.
Here's a pic of the chaps. I grab a better one comparing them to other brands when I get home.

Nta but I have those guys, they're great. TRU had them under the brand Soldier Force a few years back, both in small boxes of 50 green dudes and larger canisters that had half green half grey.
