I try to do at least one big battle around Christmastime, even if not around the tree/explicitly Christmas-related. Pic-related is a battle between Tan and Green for control of the San Nico supply dump and specifically the fuel supplies (a bottle of Woodford Reserve). I was testing out my army men wargame rules and tried to include a wide variety of units to see how they all worked (including engineers that could lay minefields).

Here's later in the battle: the Green Pioneer unit has helidropped down to lay a minefield (the pennies) and prevent Tan APCs from entering the supply depot, but Tan infantry has climbed up the back way and secured a position to fire down on Green APCs and debarking infantry (the Green APC at the top has had its main weapon destroyed by a Tan Bazooka).

Pretty awesome stuff. Have tended to neglect mine warfare myself despite an emphasis on static defenses in much of my strategic planning. Can somewhat justify this with the considerable air assets available to counter flanking maneuvers but ghosts of the Maginot Line, Eben Emael and others still haunt me.

BMC I think had round mines in one of their playsets. Always wanted a bunch of those or maybe 3d print them.

Watchtowers have arrived. Still haven't found a decent set of soldiers though. The fort is still being held by armor and paratroopers.

Very nice and tidy, I envy your storage space heh. This is very old pic and much has changed layout-wise since, but gives some idea of what I got. Would love to see the contents of all your containers but if I can pick one... cannons, tanks and wheeled vehicles.

I had two of those in green, very poor quality (one simply disintigrated at one point), they and the equally pitiful soldiers they came with became addional Iraqi forces heh. Just checked and the surviving one did indeed get sold with the rest of the surplus, sans missiles that were lost long ago. I also recognize the green Humvee with missing machine gun (know that feel) and Abrams, both from that mountain fortress set eh. Those green-tan Humvees I've seen online but never anywhere I could realistically obtain any, but I did find some decent metal Humvees at TRU some years ago (one in pic). Overall I can see you're well equipped for heavy ground engagement, my compliments.

My armies are as homogeneous as possible, the Veterans Brigade excepted of course. Some units are mixed color due to the impracticality of making separate units, usually because they're small units to start with.

Yeah I have the green one somewhere...the turrets don’t even move. I use them as Chinese tanks.
Also love the M113s in your pic; I only have one of those. My favorite APC since playing the original Command and Conquer games back in the day.

Pretty good from my experience. The sculpting is more cartoony but the plastic they use holds up well to outdoor play, and the vehicles are almost as quality as the original Timmee.

Wish I could find more of those armored boxes on treads, found one in dark blue as part of a police set but that's about it, the green UN ones were a second-hand score. APCs/IFVs for army men are none too common in general it seems, though I do also have some Bradleys.

classictoysoldiers have them btw, in dark forest green if you search for "half track". They have seated marines too in olive drab green. Not sure if they match up colorize, if not I will just get the trucks. I would get them but I live outside the US, shipping costs more than the unit itself

Just learned that Tim Mee toys is making Tanks and Jeeps in blue and grey. That's pretty exciting. Always wanted blue and grey after playing Army Men (the original game) and Sarges Heroes. I wonder if those games have anything to do why they're making them in those colors today.

Apparently its only since around 2011 that timmee toys started making new toys. Someone found and bought the original molding equipment as well as obtained the rights to it all and started making sets in as close of a copy to the originals as they can. Some of the original molds were damaged beyond repair due to age and poor storage conditions.

I got them from one of the few remaining non-chain dollar-and-more type stores in the area, though I've heard it's recently closed as well, another victim of the vahrus. They're pretty nifty tanks, with an old-fashioned pull-string mechanism to make them drive. They're not the best quality-wise, I've managed to break a couple turrets off through minor falls though a little glue has fixed that up. Only place I ever seen them was that store, nowhere online but I haven't really looked. This was a few years ago too, the store hadn't carried any since.

Got my 1 1/2 ton supply trucks... yeah they're small scale compared to 1:32 army men, but I think they'd look good carrying sand/dirt, supply crates, weapons or army men cargo...

Very nice trucks. Yeah army men are going to be a headache if one has to be strict with scale; personally I learned very early on to not worry about it. That set of British and Germans came with jeeps and artillery more suited to 1/72 scale but it didn't bother me.

Wish that were the case here, Walmarts for the last while have only been stocking boxes of these and recently were offering them for 5 bucks (half-price). On the other hand they're not exactly the greatest, can understand why they aren't flying off the shelves.

TRU here typically has these, occasionally the accessories vary but the re-imagined Timmee troops stay the same. Pretty good, if you don't already have a ton of those soldiers already heh.

And as mentioned last thread they've also been carrying these guys. I did find an orphan bag of rough Timmee KOs lying around a shelf during a recent visit but was unable to find where it came from. Already had plenty of those so I left it there, hopefully to be recruited by a future /toy/general.

These look like someone remade the timmee molds from memory without any references. How good is the tooling on that tank? I know it won't be as crisp as a real Timmee, but from the pic it doesn't look half bad.

The tanks are quite well-made, would say they're among the best reproductions of the Timmee M48 I've seen, their turrets are held on with a screw and washer which is most uncommon. The turret is molded in a way that has a pronounced area where a sticker was meant to be placed but these didn't come with any. Haven't got any of my older M48s close at hand so here it is alongside the tanks included with three other sets.

The soldiers have been kicking around a while, Thor had a page on these guys but as I'm discovering to my chagrin his site is no more. Probably still exists in the archive, but the gist of it is whoever created these troops swapped around the tops and bottoms of a couple poses and modified most of the rest. The flamethrower and bazookaman swapped from being standing and kneeling respectively; the kneeling rifleman was given the legs of the charging man with rifle and bayonet, who in turn was given the slightly modified legs of the standing rifleman with right hand out; that pose was recreated with a grenade now clutched in the right hand; the "officer" with pistol and binoculars is now in a more combat-ready pose; the plate on the minesweeper's detector is smaller and round; the machinegunner's weapon is missing its bipod; the rest of the poses are basically unchanged, save for simplified detail.

While on the subject of Timmee soldiers, thought I'd share these guys that I've had for a long time. Can't remember where I got them except it was most likely a dollar store in Winnipeg. Owing to their poor quality they invariably served on the "enemy" side and suffered severe losses; they're still officially known as the "Cheap Bucket-o-Soldiers" unit in my rolls, heh. Besides adjusting the kneeling rifleman to be aiming higher for some reason, they also added a new pose of a marching soldier with slung rifle. Between his lowered head and pained expression one can tell he's very much aware of his awful lot in plastic life.

While these are the original poses, the molds look a little soft. I have some of the original timmees, and the clothe wrinkles are a lot sharper on the originals.

They're a mixture of Timmee soldiers from over the years that are close enough in quality and color to be formed together. Several come from my original Bucket-o-Soldiers released back when Toy Story first came out, don't know who made them. Was somewhat surprised to see they made an all-new set for Toy Story 3's big merch push (with hefty inspiration drawn from the originals).

Eh I like them, we get an actual sarge pose and some variations on others. If I'd nitpick anything the green is a bit too bright.

Anyone know who originated the poses mixed in with these Timmee troopers? I've only ever found them packaged together in the same mix of olives and greens, usually with barbed wire, sandbag walls, a couple flags and a little Mi-24 Hind gunship and/or stealth bomber or two.

Very nice German infantry, what are those two guys in the second pic far left wielding? Can't decide whether they're meant to be flamethrowers or Maxim machine guns.

Been tempted so many times to get some of these but I'm always checked by the premium cost, both of the sets themselves and shipping to Canada. Having raised most of my plastic army on the cheap I guess it's also hard to justify to myself, heh. One exception I made was for these BMC Japanese, cuz I had to have that sweet Rising Sun banner.

Thanks! And yea, they’re maxims. Surprisingly, I got the WW1 infantry for pretty cheap on ebay, with the original box. Great condition and quality. As for the WW2 ones, I’ve had them for years, so I’m sorry I don’t remember the price, BUT, I’ve got one of the 6 inch ones from the same company too. My dad gave it to me, it was his when he was a kid, so, it’s decently old.

Neat display, love the gas masks. Brings back memories of the In Flanders Fields museum in Ypres, they had a display of old gas masks in clear columns that would periodically fill with sickly yellow smoke while a recording of Wilfred Owen's poem Dulce et Decorum Est played, was quite chilling.

Gettysburg is one of my favorite movies and since they filmed much of it on location I can definitely appreciate the natural beauty of the area. Can say the same about Flanders fields, though the Bellewaerde amusement park built near where the PPCLI made their stand in 1915 takes away from it some. I quite regret not taking pictures while we were there, though our only camera wasn't great and film wasn't cheap heh. Do have some prints of our visit to Bastogne somewhere, especially of the Shermans they seemed to have everywhere as memorials.

I always wondered how they made the new poses. My theory was that they cast the timmee toys in clay, and then cut them up, swapped parts around, polished them up a bit, and use them to create molds. It would be pretty cool if TImmee toys produced these poses too, though I'd really be excited if they remade the walking rifleman mold. It'd be nice to have a few noncombat poses.

I introduced my cousin’s 12 year old to them (through the Star Wars Command figures and some basic wargame rules) and he got really into them, bought more and even painted some with markers. Can we take a moment to appreciate just how nuts it is that Timmee toys is still in business despite all the Chinese knock offs? Plastic toys made in the USA. To me, it just seems incredible. The two buckets (only opened one for now) were 30 maplebucks apiece, but I got free next day delivery which was nice. Incidentally I had ordered them before I noticed that site the kind anon linked had done a review of them, when I saw their pics with soldiers and broken weapons I got nervous heh.

If that anon asking about vehicles with big wheels is around I highly recommend this set for the BRDM alone; its turret appears to be the one on Marine AAVs and is easily removable. I don't mind the red blades on the CH-47, it's been a standard for army men choppers for a long time and most of mine are the same way.

Since they're Chinese I don't know how many paratrooper poses they have in all but the ones I got were pretty nice. One of the red paras is a Solid Snake mold in 2" army men. I have four greens, once I have 8 would be nice to film a mass air drop!

Thankfully none of my soldiers suffered the same fate as the reviewer's, though whether it was a miracle or an improvement of the plastic, I couldn't say. They cram quite a bit into a relatively modest bucket, would be a game in itself to fit everything back inside that I'm not sure I can succeed at, heh. Everything feels well-made and durable, there's nice details even on the undersides of the Humvee and BRDM. The classic quartet of jets(F-104, A-4, Mirage F1 and MiG-21) are included, with molded wheels rather than moving ones. Very generous pile of barbed wire and sandbag bunkers as well, along with four Marx cannons. The soldiers themselves are a breath of fresh air for me, very modern infantry and useful poses. The pose count appears to be randomized; two of the poses shown on the reviewer's page are absent from this bucket, will be opening the second in a little bit to check out its troop composition. I'm really digging the heavy grenade launcher, kneeling rifleman with scoped G36 and prone AT missile launcher (thinking Milan?). The M60 dudes feel a bit anachronistic but they're also a bit of a reference to the famous Desert Storm army men set with a very similar pose eh. The Chinook is the icing on the cake for me, adding a heavy lift capability to my otherwise light air cav.

Tl;dr 10/10 set highly recommend.

Follow-up question about this set, looking closer at the troops I'm struggling to figure out what this guy (middle) is holding. It appears to be a mortar of some kind, with an odd tapering design and his hand at the top seems to be wrapped around the shell for it, though it's more like an old-style rifle grenade in appearance. Its because they're doing it very smartly. People outside the us will complain about the insane shipping prices, and I don't deny it, but the quality is beyond anything else avalible for the prices. They make a batch of toys, and won't make more until the current batch sells out. So there are dead times when some sets aren't avalible, because they need to make more, and in that case, you only need to wait about 6 months, or, you can directly email them and pay a little more, and they'll manufacture your set just for you. But occasionally they put some toys on hold for a while, like the army cargo truck is out of print for now. They wait until there's a big enough demand from the community for more trucks before they make more.

It may not be the best way to run a toy business, but it keeps everything affordable for them to stay in business so we can always buy from them.

Yeah there's no way a single helicopter (admittedly a very nice-looking one) and a couple dozen soldiers is worth that much, especially when I got those two buckets for 60. I know some of you guys love to praise Timmee every day but there's no raising a proper army at those premiums.

Alright lads, did some photos today. Here's one. This took a lot of post processing to get it to look the way I want. The Christmas lights in my yard give off a yellow glow, which made color correction a nightmare. I also had to artificially increase the background blur so I don't dox myself. I think I know how I could do this shot better in the future. It's flawed, but I at least got the atmosphere that I wanted. What do you think?

For getting items in custom colors, I think there needs to be a big enough outcry from the fans. Its usually how things like the cargo truck, or the pink vs blue army men come into production. They have to know they can sell a lot of them to make it worth the effort.

I had got of those when I was a kid. I got it this bag of plastic soldiers that was made out of a combination of plastic and fabric. I remember it came with plastic/cellophane map, and was full of green and tan tim mee toy clones. I loved that helo. Recently accidentally broke it, unfortunately. I think the set it came in is called "Ultimate Heroes" or "True Heroes" these days or something like that.

I have a few of those Mi-24s. I remember getting them in grade school. They're definitely neat to have. Earlier this yeah, I got some MH-6s from a few police sets. Or, at the very least, they somewhat kind of resemble an MH-6s. I'll take some pics tomorrow.

The machines they use are the very same machines used in the early 60's. There's no computers in the machines, so each machine has to be worked and monitored by an employee, and each fresh batch of men is hand dunked into cold water to set the plastic. The cars and tanks with moving parts are assembled by hand. It really is a small operation, I haven't been able to find exact numbers on how many machines they have, but they don't have enough machines to make all of their molds at the same time, and in every color. and this is why they rotate out toys, like not making the bulldog for a while so they can make trucks instead, or why some years they only make cargo c130's and other years, only gunships. Its a tiny operation, and they are keeping everything the same size to keep costs of everything down as much as they can without selling out to china.

I collected these guys with the intention of learning how to do war games, but no one wants to join me, and then corona happened, so my local game shops are all shut down. I don’t know if he’s my favorite, but I have a lot of fun memories with this old SWAT guy from a police set. He was me in an RPG my friends and I created in middle school, where we were all secret agents/special forces sent on dangerous missions during a hypothetical modern-day World War 3 against Russians and Chinese communists. We would set up elaborate layouts of bases we were infiltrating using pencils and blocks to outline the rooms and hallways, or build enemy installations outside with roving patrols we had to dodge. I painted him up to look like a black-clad commando instead of a blue uniformed policeman.

The models of this 48-man platoon divide nicely into 3 squads, 1 weapons squad and an HQ squad. Each squad is led by a staff sergeant, the weapons squad has two machine guns two bazookas plus squad leader, the platoon HQ is composed of the lieutenant or CO, first sergeant or XO, radio operator, platoon guide and medical officer. I have a lot of mortars so each squad and the weapon squad gets two, the 3 rifle squads have a flamethrower each and equipment like radio and minesweeper, 1st squad has a bazooka.

Managed to get two of them from ToySoldiersDepot a year or so ago, like a lot of their stuff they're unfortunately sold out. They're decent pieces (had gaudy stickers but I removed them) but they can't really be elevated and there's no ring at the end of the trail so it can be towed. Wonder who made them originally, hadn't seen them before or since.

From comments on the Internet, Hing Fat makes the highest quality clones, my only complaint is the removal of the antenna from radio guy and the bayonet from rifle over head guy.

The waves of poor quality Outsidian forces, staging a surprise assault through a ground floor window while Republic forces were tied up with a frontal attack on the patio door, threatened to overwhelm the small garrison of police and army reserves holding the downstairs bathroom. I tested out a simplified version of Chain of Command rules for the battle and found it fun, though not really built for the large number of forces involved (72 attackers and 45 defenders).

They have a mechanism so they keep rolling when you push them, which is infinitely better than the pull back and let go gimmick often seen in these toys. The turret really should be moved a little bit forward or the barrel lengthened to be perfect, but they're pretty nice as they are, more than adequate for plastic warfare.

BMC and Timmee are both fully american companies, which is why their toys are much more expensive than the chinese knockoffs.

uh... also ebay exists, just search for timmee toys, and pretty much everything they've made will pop up one way or another, then check their official ebay or amazon stores to see if similar items are available, or you can ask them straight up. Some times but not always, if a toy is out of stock or out of rotation, they can offer to print some just for you if you're willing to pay a lot more. Gotta ask them yourselves for that, cause being a tiny factory, it changes from time to time.

Dollarama started carrying these sets a couple years ago, picked up a couple more recently. When they started they had more variety in the combinations but these two seem to be the only ones I can find now; previous sets included a different trailer with frame strung with plastic vegetation for camouflage and a few soldiers glued in place inside, and more strands of plastic vegetation draped over the cannon (can't locate mine at this time or I would've included them in pics). The soldier and tank are for size reference, being fairly standard representations.

Each set is $4 CAD which is pretty good for what you get. There tend to be little strands of glue from rushed assembly here and there but they're easily removed. The hitches can be a little tricky to separate but the manufacturer foresaw this; the hitch connecting the trailer to the jeep slides off, allowing better access to separate it from the jeep. Everything is roughly to scale with typical army men, another plus. The jeep has one of those push mechanisms that keeps it rolling a while when you push it along, a somewhat inferior version to most I've encountered but it's not of great importance. The four plant pieces on the cardboard box part of the packaging are easily removed and added to one's stock of plastic foliage for setups. The cannon has a fixed elevation but can rotate fully 360 degrees. If I can find the variants I'll get a pic of those sometime.

So I bought 10 packs of Timmee green/tan soldiers last year and they all had the same distribution, 2 officers and minesweepers, 8 riflemen and 4 each of the other nine poses, with 2 more soldiers in random poses thrown in for a total of 50 per color. Bought two more packs (made in July 2020) and it seems now the distribution is purely random, as I received no green flamethrowers in one pack and the counts were way off for the other poses in both packs. Not sure if is the new normal for Timmee or just a messed up production run but I found it interesting. Oh, and the new plastic stickers for Timmee vehicles suck ass compared to the old paper stickers they were using.

Awesome. Yeah the island is made out of foam and floats in the bath and has a skull “rock” on it. Came with some 1” tall cartoony pirates and a little boat iirc. I use it mainly as a hill in wargames these days.

Yeah, there are a bunch of army men wargame rule in the OP, several of them free. The game in the pic was done using One Hour Wargames, rules, which aren't free but give a good simple game.

I had grey and green army men as a child but would never enact battles of any kind with them just create dioramas using the following method
>get boxes, baskets, books, other large objects
>throw a sheet over them to simulate a landscape
>add some buildings eg lego, lincoln logs, cardboard
>use a blue shirts for river and coasts
>grey shirts for cliffs
>white sock snowcap
>arrange the armies
>look at my creation then pack it all away again

BMC are more model like, with much more tiny details, stiffer plastic, less rubbery, but you really have to order a small set yourself to feel the difference. Its something you can feel more than explain. But if just dumbed into a tub of other BMC men, unlikely to make any noticeable damage. And BMC men are a hair taller scale than Timmee's army men. Closer to Timmee's swat men, if you've got any. The scale difference is only noticeable if you have them standing right next to each other, but if you spread them out, and use some force perspective, it's fine.

I remember using dollar store Airfix knockoff 8th Army and cowboys to fight the Boer War. Then, my younger brother and I fought a multi-year "imagi-nations" conflict around our house and yard. We'd get snap-tite aircraft kits at airshows we'd go to with our dad and repaint them in the colors of our fictional air forces. I remember his fighter squadrons were Mk. I Hurricanes in an overall sky-blue scheme with red tails, cowlings, and a stripe running down each wing at about 2/3s its length.

I do remember using a lot of Armies in Plastic figures, which are still some of my favorites. I remember tentative steps towards actual wargaming when I found our local library had one set of Charles Grant's rules and Donald Featherstone's "Battles with Model Soldiers."

Haven't done much with vehicles other than some painting when I was younger, have made some crude custom soldiers out of broken or otherwise useless figures. Many of them are just filling in for lost bits like the ends of rifles or missing weapons altogether; got a bad batch of grey US GIs somewhere that I cannibalized for a lot of these. I found that heat can often make for a stronger bond than glue, though the results usually don't look so pretty, heh. Would imagine kitbashing with models would be easier than using army men vehicles since they're disassembled to begin with.

So I want to get a 3D printer, mainly so I can make my own molds to do plastic injection molding for my own army men. Has anyone tried anything similar before? (Yes I know about /3dpg/ on /tg/).

Most interesting, I've seen those packs in the past but they're always clones of the Timmee Vietnam War troops. Dollar Tree I take it? Gotta keep an eye out.

Yup, its from dollar tree. I have seen knockoffs of the Vietnam soldiers but the packaging is different (same as the ones for these cheapo gi joe looking toys). Also, nice book. I have the Scandinavian book from that series, been meaning to pick up the one on Burma.

Got a good chunk of the collection from Value Village over time, haven't taken care of them so they're not in great condition sadly... awesome series though, they're all worth reading but I give a reccomendation to the War of the Outposts and the one on the Nazis, the latter in particular for all the drama between the various big names, hard to believe they lasted as long as they did.

The last time I was in Dollar Tree they had these guys again, nice to have armies not completely copied from older armies showing up.

The people behind the Combat Storm rules for army men wargaming had packs of plastic discs for sale; they were for gluing to the bases of army men to give them more stability. Most of my life I've fought my battles on carpets and rugs, one gets used to it over time I suppose. It can offer the benefit of being able to "dig in" soldiers who might give you trouble on any surface.

Found some in my area, have to say the soldiers seem more like swat team dudes, especially with that battering ram guy. Wouldn't mind finding the soldiers on their own; these packs with tank, flags and sandbags are great and all but I wish they packed more troops.
