Still the best line DC has had in a long time. I just wish I could fucking find the new waves or that anyone carried the non-Batman line. I don't usually dig the weird solid color variants, but that clear Riddler is neat.

They're great! The only DC toys worth buying currently. They're very world buildy with vehicles and playsets and lots of characters. Each figure also has random blind packed accessories so you never really know what you're going to get, and they're in random different colors with some colors rarer than others.

Anyway, the Aquaman two pack is back on Amazon. Probably gonna pick that up. I can't decide on the Darkseid two pack. If I didn't already have superman I would, but I hate doubling up, especially since he's not even a variant Supes. But Darkseid is very tempting. Although I'm hoping he might get a single release.

He's not wrong, but I think he worded things a bit weirdly. By no equal I think he's factoring things like design, popularity, favor from DC, etc. From the tone of the interview I got the impression he wants to do a lot of those tertiary characters, just if they're cool. Spin Master's drawing a lot from the '89 movie and Batman the Animated Series with their toys. I don't know what it'll look like in the end, but they have a past track record of making things that look inspired by or almost like stuff from BtAS and the various movies. They have almost an amalgamation line, which is kinda what I like about them.

I've gone to two Targets this week. First one had a decent amount of figures in the kids section and then a bunch of WW84 BS by the NECA stuff. Second Target had even more stuff in both sections plus the extra endcap with the Flash. And yeah, all of them are 89 inspired. That almost goes without saying. All the batmobiles before 89 were basically just sportscars and concept cars with fins and bat faces painted black. The 89 one was the first time it was truly a wholly unique vehicle.

Yes, but the 4-inch doesn't look like the 12-inch. It's a different design, where the 4-inch is for sure based on the White Knight look. The 12-inch is clearly more of an '89 Batmobile, and indeed that's the draw of that particular Spin Master vehicle is the fact that it more resembles the Tim Burton look.

I'm not sure how well he'll scale next to the McFarlane villains that are coming out, but he is shorter than the earlier Classics version, because he's using a teenager body, while the Classics used the regular adult buck for the release. And McFarlane's figures scale bigger, which sometimes isn't that noticeable, and sometimes it is such as with Batgirl, who's like the size of an NBA player.

He might work out for icons. I don't know what it is about companies trying to constantly invent new scales instead of relying on a standard 6-inch. The scale is what killed icons, and it's the biggest negative for McFarlane. There's occasional figures that McFarlane has done or announced that looked interesting, but the scale ended up hurting my interest. Batgirl being one of them, I really like her sculpt, but she's very tall even for other figures in the McFarlane line. I also don't care for the sculpt on the basic Batman figure that McFarlane put out, the head sculpt just doesn't look very good, it's kinda soft in the features, and I don't like buying into a line if I can't have the main heroes in their basic form. I'm mainly collecting Classics/Multiverse and various DC Direct figures and putting them together in my collection-- I mostly care about classic versions of characters also so a lot of these new figures don't do much for me, and I'm particularly a big fan of 70's and 80's Batman, such as the Steve Englehart run.

We really need a good Hugo Strange figure. We got an Arkham games version and one that's him as Batman, and various other companies did one, but no proper one in Classics or Multiverse.

Multiverse was sort of shit show, because it was filled with too much movie stuff and figures such as the Dark Knight Returns figures being spread out across multiple waves instead of just being in one dedicated wave. There was good figures in there, but all the movie stuff hurt the line. It also didn't hel with the DKR Batman that he was a store exclusive and then like in the wave with Robin they made the main Batman the Armored version. I ended up seeing a lot of both figures clogging shelves.

A lot of them have articulation comparable to Marvel Legends. A toy doesn't need to have 100 points of articulation to be good or fun. Sometimes you just want a toy that you can play around with and looks good and checks off all the boxes you're looking for in a toy. It doesn't have to be something pretending to be a high end collectible. That's also why the Spin Master toys are good.

As figures to hit against each other, DCUC was fantastic, they felt robust, they were big, you could put their arms out to punch, their legs out to kick, and that's great for play. But for those people who like to pose and display their figures outside of a vanilla standing display, they really weren't particularly good, becoming maybe decent in that regard towards the end, for the most part.

Spin Master has significantly less articulation with their line and it seems to be vastly more successful than McFarlane's by simply being a toy and being toyetic and catering to kids.

The parts probably didn't exist. The tooling for an entire brand new figure was $100,000 and $20,000 for a partial tooling and employed a buck system like Marvel Legends uses. If they didn't give you a new articulation, it was because the part didn't exist yet. For example it was a long while before the teenager buck appeared in the line for slimmer characters.

It's a well known aspect that they scale small. The figure in the middle is Icons. You could make some of the characters work with other lines, but you had to deal with the fact that characters may be shorter next to Classics and other lines.

Essentially they made all these toys on a budget. People bitch when a company like Super7 wants to charge $45 for a completely 100% tooled figure, but never consider why Super7 would charge what they charge. The reason Mattel could charge $20(at retail) is because they use a budget and bucks, were carried by a lot of retailers to make the slim profit margin work.

Look at any kickstarter to get an idea of how much you need to make something.

Like Mcfarlane's Spawn, which was only $100k, but included with the price is PROFITS.
Do note that the Spawn figure is made up of many more pieces than your typical DCUC figure, since there's much more articulation and has a more complex paint job too.
Also the packaging, which was "collectors" quality shit (ie, more expensive).

You've already shown that Todd's kickstarter asked for $100,000(something he really didn't need if he runs a toy company) to eat the cost of tooling. Todd made over $2 million(more than enough to cover it) and owns a toy factory and was still asking for $100,000, and even with that he sculpted it as a statue intially and refused to fix the torso, likely because the figure was probably already being tooled and going into production since Todd runs a toy factory.

No, because his first working prototype included the second torso joint, which shows his original intention was to produce it like everyline he's been doing. Everything else basically stayed intact.

The fact he raised 2 million bucks (?) doesn't mean anything, because any business would have their initial goal being where they're profiting with the same margins as anything else they produce.

Since almost every kickstarter has had similar price goals, all things being equal, it's safe to surmise that these are the true costs... in making a profitable toyline.

Going further, the Spawn figure basically cost $40. So the manufacturing cost is way less than $100,000.

Going even further, since McFarlane is a muuuuch smaller company than Mattel, Mattel undoubtedly gets a better deal manufacturing toys. So that guy was undoubtedly lying, in order to make it sound like Mattel isn't ripping you off hardcore with their toys
