That piece sits too high on the sides and keeps the hat from connecting with the head stud. This is what it looks like with a round stud inside the hat.

Lately, I've been thinking of the old Viking sets from 15 years ago. There were only 7 sets, but I feel like there's more potential with the concept, so I'd like to see them come back, even though I doubt it'll happen.

Man I am sorting through my entire collection because I'm selling it all but am I finding so many "brittle blue" pieces from the late 2000s in my collection. Even some bricks that just smash into a million pieces if you apply enough pressure to them, it's bizarre. Blue is the only color I've found in my parts that behaves this way.

The only other annoying thing I've found is that a lot of my light blue grey and white pieces have yellowed quite a bit, and most of these pieces were in an unlit room inside drawers for years with no exposure to sunlight at all and they still yellowed a bit.

How is the quality of Lego plastic these days? Has it gotten even worse? I remember when the collectible minifigs first came out they outsourced production of them to factories in China or something and you could tell that the parts were noticeably of lower quality plastic. Has that happened with standard Lego pieces as they have ramped up production due to increased popularity?

Quality is all over the place.

I think a lot of these can be traced back to some level of impatience on Lego's part. Cycle time on injection machines too short, relying on cad without building the thing, preferring an existing IP over sticking with their own, etc.

There's an image showing a lot of defects but I don't have it.

It's honestly beyond terrible and easily prone to cracking over time due to internal stress from producing the pieces too fast and newer and cheaper plastics and injection methods they're using where instead of getting their pellets pre-colored they're now using translucent pellets with color pigments getting added during the moulding which results in color deviations and potential plastic durability issues.

I also can't help but think that they fucked up the clutch power/tolerances over the years.
I recently compared gently connecting and disconnecting a couple of 1-stud wide bricks onto and from a stud from recent sets with some from the 90s and early 2000s and while the older ones go smoothly on and off, there is a noticable force behind the newer ones disconnecting, as if there is so much clutch and stress that the piece literally pops off by itself.
Now, it could be just old age of the older bricks but given how consistent the issue was it could also be something else.

How would you construct the cargo compartment for a pelican like vehicle without just making it look like a box? I also want to avoid making a huge ship but I suspect I'd need it to be eight studs wide minimal to fit seated minifigures on both sides.

I've seen the Mega Pelican and it's too big for my tastes.

I was going to say "it is what it is" and look at it as a nice parts pack but then i realized that this is the one fucking time they actually decide to print bricks (because it's for kids, i'm aware) and the prints ruin any outside application of the big curved panels

Yeah I know, I just want to make a similar ship out of Lego in minifigure scale but without it becoming a big rectangular box with wings and a cockpit attached.

Any examples of Lego ships able to hold several minifigures seated or standing in some sort of cargo space would be appreciated. Maybe I should try using plates for the sides instead of bricks.

Lego spaceships that have a large cargo hold are always boxes with wings and a cockpit, like the Cosmic Fleet Voyager or the Galactic Mediator. But they get around this by using slanted or round sidepanels that make them look less boxy.

Fucking hell. I thought Brittle Blue was the only problem I would have but now I'm finding out dark red also is prone to being brittle.

Fuck this. I have hundreds of 1x8 and just none in this color for some reason. These are brittle as fuck too, a slight amount of pressure and they just snap into pieces.

This is one of the reasons why I never bother taking things apart when selling them. I'm selling the sets as they are and the buyer can decide if they want to take the risk themselves.

Most sets I'm selling are already disassembled. I just take parts out of my drawers and make sure they're in good condition (all my parts are really), but for some reason I still had this one assembled and had to disassemble it.

I'm selling my whole collection right now, over 300 sets not including all my childhood sets but is this the preference of people that buy used lego? I just want to ensure everything I'm selling is like-new in condition, since all my parts are in great shape but occasionally when sorting through I will find one that is extremely faded or scratched and just replace it with a newer looking part.

I've been disassembling all mine, mostly because I want to ensure every single piece is included so I don't have to deal with someone complaining about missing parts, but also because it's just easier to ship them disassembled in zip lock bags than assembled since the parts for larger sets are so bulky and fragile and packing it is a nightmare.

God shipping kits I have with boxes is even worse though, especially the large sets. I'm actually glad I tossed most of my boxes years ago because they took up too much space because shipping those large kits is just a fucking PITA. Just getting large, flat boxes is expensive as hell so I ended up just making my own boxes by cutting up other large boxes I have.

Also, one thing that bothers me is how there's variations with the parts, such as bricks with the hollow bottom round bits, vs. the solid ones, or the tiles that have a solid bottom stud in the middle vs. the ones with all hollow bottom studs. Then there's the fucking color variation with dark red which really pisses me off. Newer dark red seems to be more solid in color, while the older stuff is more transparent and clear and having to compare them to make sure all my dark reds look the same is such a pain.

Whites are even worse though. So many of my whites have yellowed slightly even stuff that's just been sitting around in a drawer for years. I assume it's because the plastic just slowly yellows over time no matter if it's exposed to UV or not.

I'd say that it depends on the size of the set. Smaller ones are usually sold disassembled, since it's easier to take them apart and check the pieces. But bigger sets like modular buildings tend to be sold built (at least here) and the seller just takes pictures from all angles to show the condition of the set.

If it's rare enough and the price is right, it will sell even if missing some pieces and covered in dust.

As someone who recently got back into Lego, I do not notice any of this. I have built numerous sets ranging from simple ones, to collector oriented. I also compared the bricks with my old ones and do not seem to notice any major differences. I am from Europe though. Are you American? I heard rumors the US gets shit quality bricks in their sets.

Those are official stickers from LEGO 853921 XTRA - they are quite nice, but printed on transparent sheet, so you can see brick color breaking through most of them...

If you want to make your own stickers, high quality inkjet printer (ones used for printing photos) and a semi-gloss sticker sheet (you can buy them online) do the job. To cut them out, use scalpel and metal ruler for extra precision.

To get print colors righ thou, u will need to make few test prints

Basically same stuff, but istead of using semi-gloss self-adhesive paper, you use self-adhesive transparent paper.

When it comes for software I was using AutoCAD for that, u got a lot of precision with it... but you could do samey work with photoshop.

It is really cool overall, I think the largest underwater ship they've made? It has a nice amount of interior space and cool accessories like the hoses, a magnet closed back compartment, red bush, 3 animals including the stingray which is decently rare. I also love the dark-grey octagon modified bricks.

I think it is also the best use of the giant UFO panels / saucers, both the transparent ones and the inverted ones underneath. I love giant transparent parts.

I am biased because I love aquazone, had this as a kid, and love the stingray faction. I think its great but could easily see someone being underwhelmed, but it is huge too.

It is THE stingray set to get. ~$115 with all parts + instructions is decently affordable compared to some vintage sets, but I am more partial to bases like the neptune lab which is not much more expensive than this set.

I actually have one of these + the base for sale too that is 100% with instructions, but my store is closed for the year.

Not only does it have the large quarter dish panels on top, there's a complete bowl in the center. Lot's of secret compartments inside too.
Cool build overall, allthough I like the claw function and detachable cockpit of the Stingray Lobster better.

So the most important thing to MOCing steam trains is getting the internals of the wheels set up first and foremost. Sometimes you can get away with stuffing motors/batteries into a tender or a separate train car, but most of the time you're gonna have to figure out a way to stuff a motor, a battery box, and all the necessary gears into the engine itself.

Pic related is an unmotorized example of what you should figure out with your steam locomotives first before getting into the stuff above the wheels. Once you figure out a chassis that you like that you know can go through lego's curves without derailing then you can start on the rest of the build.

I don't have any real instructions to share due to a bunch of the stuff I cribbed off of when I was starting out and learning train techniques coming from Brickshelf, and it's almost impossible to find what you're looking for there unless you remember who uploaded that shit ages ago. I'll find something though, gimme a few mins

This was the best pic I could find on short notice so I'm sorry these aren't steam trains, but here's an example of 6 wide (Lego standard) vs 7 wide (What I usually build my trains in and what most European builders tend to build in) vs 8 wide (The scale most American builders tend to build in). Depending on what kind of trains you want to build, the scaling is all up to you, but from what I've seen it's easier to fit/hide electronics in 8 wide models than it is 6/7 wide.

The first video is just a general train build to see some various techniques/details, while the second video shows how to build a basic motorized chassis for an 0-6-0 loco (With room to add leading trailing trucks). I'd recommend checking out BritishBrick's channel in general if you're looking to get into train MOCing since he has a few tutorials and WIP/Idea videos alongside videos of his MOCs.

If you don't mind paying for instructions too I'd also check out Block Junction, they've got a couple of different steam loco types (Mostly 0-6-0s but also a 2-6-0 and a 4-6-0) that you might be interested in looking at. They only do UK stuff but you could probably still take some notes on how the internals are done.

Not that anon, but The standard lego ones are exactly right for a black 5, always begin with the driving wheels, then the other wheels since they probably need articulation wich can quickly fill up all the space and if you want to motorise it you schould search for the best space where the motor and other electrical stuff will sit as your first or second priority while building since it can be a huge problem when a motor doesnt fit leading to extensive rebuilding

f you don't want the engine powered through the engine itself it's easy as fuck to just slap some wheels on a base and throw all the electronics in a passenger or freight car using the regular Lego train motor.

If you want to motorize the engine itself you'll need a little know-how in the realm of technic gears. Pic related is the most basic bitch example of a train gearbox I whipped up in like 5 minutes, but you can mess around with different gear sizes/ratios for better torque/pulling strength. With this example you'd have to put the Powered Up battery box either either towards the other end of the locomotive or in a tender.

Well, that was a bust. I've been sloooooooowly removing the printing from this ledlite arm because the printing is extremely durable (makes sense because it was designed to ride around in a pocket all day). I got a dremel with a felt tip in the hopes that it would do a better job removing the print from this ledlite arm. Unfortunately, the friction caused the plastic to begin melting before the printing came off (and the plastic is fairly brittle so I managed to take a chip off as well).

Time to order another Banana Guy keychain and just deal with hand cramps, I guess.

Are you talking about a ledlite piece, or a regular lego element? I've removed lots of printing from regular elements, but these ledlite pieces are made from a different kind of plastic. Acetone that melts regular lego pieces doesn't affect this at all.

I was able to remove the printing using an eraser and my normal method as seen here >>9513194
but it takes forever, which is why I tried the dremel.

Mildly related, I've been casually piecing together androids somewhat based on vintage 90's space themes that never had one, mostly spurred on by the new transparent light blue droid head.

The Explorien / Spyrius droids are some of my favorite figs with their silver plated torso / legs. Transparent helmets or minifig parts are always cool too.

The UFO ones do have opaque red and blue droid heads which might be useful somewhere.

Has anyone tried anything similar?

Is this the most blatant downgrade set ever released by Lego? What the fuck were they thinking?

Compared to the 2007 version it's laughable how terrible this piece of shit is. It's uglier, it has a much worse build, it has far less pieces, it's much smaller and in general it's just ugly to look at and looks nothing like the actual vehicle from the film. It even has that awful gap and technic parts showing without any effort to cover it up.

Even the original one released in 2000 looks more interesting than this thing.

I only say this because I just went into my collection and re-assembled the 2007 version for sale and realized why that kit is still selling for so much money today.

It's kinda complicated in GER and EU, but basically when a design stems from functionality, you can't protect it. That includes groves on the bottom of tules and such. So the CMF minifig plate could probably be protected, but a 3×4 plate couldn't. Otherwise Lego could be prevented from using a 1×5 plate or 1×3 jumper, as others had it first.
There is however something like a 3D-brand, the Lego minifig is an example. So no matter the functionality, nobody is allowed to copy that.

lego trains get huge cockpit pieces but we get no rods for making decent steam locos,
the management has no connection to their customers, if they did they have a lot more train stuff
its a huge missed opportunity since Trainfags are willing to pay ridiculous prices for custom Train rods and Wheels
back in the day they had way more surrounding railway infrastructure as well like railcrossings for example

Not just trainfags, but any other fags as well. To this day mixel joints are mainly available in light and dark bluish gray. They put it in creator and adult sets and they stick out every time, unless it's star wars. At least there is a little variety now with bracket pieces. But even those don't really come in translucent much, if at all. Then there are Technic pins and axles that over the years were turned to blue, red, bright light orange, brown tones, instead of keeping them black and gray. Then of course I turn to other brands instead of fucking up my colour schemes.

actually affects all the speed champions sets with that paticular windshield piece, so 5 sets according to my quick count. the windshield doesn't fit properly if the minifig has any headgear at all

And just like that, the thread hit the image limit. Nobody was quite sure what would happen next. Some posters complained about how no one had made a new thread yet. Others debated, 'Should I make it? What if I mess up the pasta? What if someone else makes it a few seconds before I do?', but in the end it didn't matter. The thread was at the image limit and anything they saw there beyond that point would just be praise for mocs, or more likely scorn for licensed sets.
