I went to buy a tiny set at a generic toy store, and realised I still had a few I hadnt built yet.
I only remembered I had that red box with random stuff in the attic, but it turns out there were still boxes from 2 years ago or something. The yellow classic box was a gift for a cousin who eventually couldnt make it here and seeing him rarely, I may as well just keep it (plus hes probably not interested in lego anymore)

tl;dr had a busy year and completely forgot about those

Question to Lego Harry Potter fans: What’s the appeal? Lego capestuff allows you recreate stuff from the comics, Lego SW allows to create huge battles, but HP has neither of those things. Do you just create your own characters and insert them into Hogwarts? I’m genuinely curious.

Wouldn't wax chip away over time? I think using a buffing wheel is better because you're actually removing a tiny layer of the plastic to make it polished instead of adding something on top of it that can still be scratched off.

In my experience, the pledge floor polish treatment looks good from a distance, but when you look at it under a macro lens you can see drip marks.

An automotive car wax like Turtles has a very fine abrasive in it to remove oxidation from the paint. I have found it works pretty well with LEGO as well. Although, if you have a deep scratch or tooth marks in the LEGO piece it will make it more noticeable. The abrasive will remove the dirt and the wax adds a nice shine. Give it a try with older bricks.

Also screw the haters about the burnt orange color I love it, much better than my awful beige and tans that I have.

So help me out /toy/

I was thinking of splurging and getting a 100+ dollar set from some of my christmas bonus. At first I was thinking of Daily Bugle, but the more I look at it the set looks like a pretty boring build, and a big grey box.

Not to mention how it isn't a complete build, the back is open, and while it has 25 minifigs only a few is really cool (Punisher, Blade) while a big part is stuff I've already gotten and alot are civilian minifigs with basic prints.

I've been looking at the Blacksmith. It's more than half the price of the bugle, looks like a more fun build and a better display piece. Opinions?

I'm open to other sets, but not modulars.

You're too late to get Barracuda Bay for retail, but the Blacksmith is the next best thing as far as unlicensed soul goes.

Daily bugle is hands down the most interesting skyscraper you'll ever get from an official lego set, but it's not a particularly great standalone piece.

Blacksmith is charming, similar to the idea treehouse. It's just sorta pretty to look at. There are no licensed figures to carry the weight of its costs however.

Bugle fits best in a sprawling modular layout where you could sell the figs to cover the cost imo.

Whether you're after sets to display or for the fun of the build, I'd rather have two large creator expert sets of my choice than one daily bugle.

I don't much care for the fig itself, but am glad it exists as it is the only real source of sand purple minifig bits.

LEGO hates the prequels. The fact they made a republic gunship UCS without a shitload of figs is a good show of that.

They even dookied out an AT AT with a battlepacks worth of snowtroopers right after it.

Making a clone wars troop transporter without troops is like designing it to fail. Tons of ruined potential, I am salty about that.

Guess they really don't like making the first-gen clones. The last AotC set was 2018's "battlepack" with two clones and two named Jedi, real waste of an army-builder.

Has LEGO ever made a 2 seater police car? I'm thinking something in the speed champion size. Smaller if possible but 6 wides are tight to begin with. I just hate the fact that all the cops in my city are rolling solo.

These sets are sold all over the world. Having kids have faces of their same ethnicity on random background characters is a nice way of including them in.

Just look at the fucking box. Lego doesn't do them like this anymore, the fucking SOVL just oozing out of the images, the colors, the originality of the theme and set. I have a small display on 2 shelves, but they collect dust real easily, especially the lower shelf. Usually every 3-4 weeks. I used to be extremely neurotic about dust but I've realized it's impossible not to let some surface dust be on your Lego. I use a compressed air can and a makeup brush to clean it though, doesn't take long, just dust off surfaces and stuff. Then about once every 4-5 months maybe I do a real deep-clean.

What do we even mean by "great quality" here ? I grew up with space police2 and 90-94 space era, so dont get me wrong I do miss those humongous ships, but there are quite a lot of decent sets now like picrel that are way more diverse than what we used to get

The only thing I feel missing were those gigantic grey plates.
Gosh my blacktron base was nasty

yep this is the way to go. any garment bag will work well. I wash with a laundry pod + clorox2 which works well as a degreaser to remove years of shit caked on. I do it on a heavy wash in warm water, then when it's time to dry I shake the bag to get off any extra water that the spin cycle didn't get rid of, then put into the dryer with a bunch of already dry kitchen/bath towels, set it to low/no heat and run for about 30 mins to an hour, they come out completely clean. I've done this method with every single bulk purchase from craigslist/fb/ebay and it has worked perfectly.

Revisited an old MOC today, it’s a transformable bot that can stretch/compress between ape-like and humanoid proportions.

I guess it's up to each and every person to determine what a "good set" is. For me, I'd pick the base I posted over the one you did every time.
The boring two tone is actually interesting to me, gives it a particular aesthetic that I prefer to more colorful sets such as the one you posted.
To me in some ways less is more, and less color means more interchangeability of parts. As far as quality - compare a 90s flap box with a modern box. It is nowhere near the same.
There's a special kind of magic those boxes have, and modern set boxes completely fail to capture it.
Part of the magic of older sets is that the "what is that" element you posted is there. Those things are whatever you want them to be. You fill in the blanks and build up the story. They can be anything.
Oddly enough I didn't grow up with these and never had them, and yet I still enjoy them a lot more than the modern offering of sets.

The worst thing I did as a kid was have my dad SUPERGLUE some of my earliest lego sets together.

The city airport (1993?), my black seas barracuda, my Imperial trading post, and many more of my earliest sets including my fucking Unitron monorail was fucking superglued.

Then, over the years, I lost so many of my parts for these sets, the Unitron monorail is fucking $600 used today and I lost many of its parts including the moon baseplate. I fucking wish I took better care of my stuff but I was a kid and kids play with Lego, that's how it's meant to be but I wish I just took better care of it regardless.

I didn't, it was my dad that did it.

He came from a very poor background, and growing up I don't think he fully understood the purpose of Lego and that it was meant to be taken apart to be played with, and he wanted to make it more "durable." I was still able to take apart most of the pieces though, super glue is pretty brittle so they come off easy.

Still, my original Aquazone Neptune's lab and many other sets mentioned above were glued together by my dad...

The manager, who has the power to decide whether CMFs are placed on the shelf or behind the checkout counter, will not "get the message" that you don't want the CMFs behind the counter simply because you bought a bunch and returned them.

If anon wants the manager to "get the message", he will actually have to say something out loud using his big boy voice. Simply buying a bunch of CMFs, fondling them in the parking lot, and then meekly returning the duds will do absolutely nothing to change the situation.

thinking about re-buying this castle after almost 20 years, this was the castle set I grew up on. However it's probably not that great of a set anymore from the eyes of grown up me. Do I still get it?

I legit loved Knights Kingdom II so much that I made a theater play out of it with my friends in like third grade. We played it to our parents during graduation, it was probably fucking horrible. But hey, that's a goofy lego story from me to you!

For starters, it costs as much as >>9533703 or even ten bucks more in Europe while having almost 400 parts less and a lot of the 490 remaining ones are smaller pieces like studs, small tiles, clips, etc.
The build is barebones, often borderline primitive like the thighs and sometimes flat out unfinished, like as if you're missing a couple of parts like on the legs.
The only real highlight are the trans-pearl pieces like the Deviant wings or the discs on the Celestial's feet.
It honestly feels like some 40 bucks set that was marked up to make up for Lego's storage costs due to the movie's delay and the sets already being made but the (even by Lego-standards) comically oversized box it comes in says otherwise.

I never had that one, but I did have have Vladek's Dark Fortress and thought it was an awesome set. I think it's probably the only Knights Kingdom II set that really holds up to even today's standards. The thing is huge with lots of big parts yet still has enough detailing to look cohesive.

It took lepin a decade to get as close as they are now, and they are pretty darn close. You couldn't compete with the fandom of lego and the low prices of lepin.

Making molds for customs that compliment lego pieces is a lucrative business though. Brickmania did a kickstarter just to sell abs injection molded track links for tanks and they raised 50k back in 2014 and they still sell a ton of those things. Here’s another super old MOC that I updated this week. The torso is mostly the same but the limbs are all new. It’s kinda skeletal obviously but I think it fits the industrial look. For future MOCs I’ll figure out how to wrap those ratchet joints with a layer of system pieces.

Want to know what really pisses me off about certain sets? When you have to hold them carefully on very specific points to avoid having bits fall off. This so-called modern SNOT building seems to make it impossible for kids to actually play with larger sets. No wonder they start to prefer other forms of entertainment at a later age, the patience just runs out for a toy that costs more than a new game.

Started Barracuda Bay yesterday. I was pleasantly surprised how soothing it was to build, just all the colours and techniques. Looking forward to continuing.

I had no idea the Vidiyo series 2 was so rare, some of the figs have 1-2 listing on BL within the USA at most. Bought all 14 at my local walmart, first one I opened was the vampire waifu which has only 1 listing in the USA for $25. I'll probably keep a few I like and list the rest on BL.

I was looking for post x-mas clearances at big retail stores (realistically expecting nothing), meijer and walmart were both sold out of literally everything other than a few mario sets. I've never seen it so barren.

Meanwhile Target had almost all new 2022 releases in stock, even some things older things like modulars and the bouquet.

Gonna open the rest of the vidiyo, I love the transparent figure part ones.

Illegal builds using wedged-together pieces are unimpressive, yes. If you can't actually build something with your legos, it's not impressive to simply force or glue the pieces together. The same goes for "mocs" that are just loose pieces carefully balanced on top of each other, or pieces that aren't fully in clutch.

Creative constraints are something specific to whatever the person making the thing has available and chooses to make them.
Your constraints aren't really an objective standard, they exist as a legal net to keep kids responsible for breaking their own parts.
If you want to do that there's nothing wrong with that, it has it's benefits but there's also nothing wrong with not doing that either if you're fine with the potential consequences and your mom won't yell at you for it.

No one's arguing that you're not allowed to make a moc with "illegal" techniques. We're saying that when you cut corners (literally, looking at you auschwitz set), or wedge pieces in between other pieces, or use dodgy out-of-click connections like the rail in your pic, rather than work within the constraints of the Lego system, it's not as impressive as a similar build that works within the system.

I seriously don't understand why Lego got into such dire financial straits. But as soon as they pivoted to fully licensed everything the company turned around and became soulless in the process.

It's literally because they made super expensive boxes like these >>9531511 >>9531653 while also trying to catch people's attentions with a variety of new themes and ideas all at once. It's why the late 90s had a bunch of themes/subthemes introduced and discontinued in the same year like Imperial Armada, Roboforce, and like half of the Aquazone themes, and why Lego was experimenting with things like Scala, Znap, Lego PC games, and the unreleased CYBOTS. They were also shitting out new sets/molds/colors by the fuckload. In the early 90s 110-150 new sets per year, while by 1998 there were over 300 coming out.

Lego over-expanded too quickly in an attempt to keep up with its competitors in the 90s like Mega Bloks and K'nex and it would have cost them had they not made a deal with the Devil in the form of the combined success of Star Wars and Bionicle.

Am I crazy for seeing the exact same pattern lately? Smartphone AR experiments like Nexo Knights, Hidden Side and VIDIYO for example. What's keeping them afloat this time, licenseshit and nostalgiafagging millennials?

Stuntz seemed like they finally remembered what fun was. Best part was watching a hyperactive kid in the LEGO store crashing a Rocket Racer into an employee (who had to block the way to avoid it from flying across the store) repeatedly. So glad I don't work there.

Lego hired a bunch of fresh out of college designers when a lot of their older members were going into retirement.
I'm fine with it. Mixes things up, and forced lego to try new things like Bionicle... or Galador.

I don't really think it's quite accurate to put everything on the same level of cutting pieces apart and gluing them together.
Technically you're not even supposed to do something like switching out arms on a torso because it wears down the holes. Same thing with with legs and hip pieces.
So if you've ever done something like that, then I'm sorry you we're so uncreative that you didn't want to work within lego's legal net.
