As Destrongers they're implied to be more advanced and dangerous than the Destrons of old. This is personified in their leader Gigatron's name, who would logically be 1000 times superior of Megatron

Unfortunately, no, which makes the Legacy version all the more disappointing. There are definitely areas Laser Prime could be improved upon, but they fucked up other parts of it in their "update".

Got Shouki in today. I really dig him (mostly for the train mode), but why the FUCK is there so much clear plastic on this thing? Unless this is some spaceage neo clear plastic, there's no way something isn't breaking later on.

But holy crap, how does anyone make the argument that legacy wasn't at least a posing improvement? Just because the shoulder pylons don't swivel with the arms?
I mean, I can at least follow the logic of the other criticisms.

It is, except for the pylons, which are unfortunately a major feature of the design. If you look at >>9876168, Scourge's pose wouldn't look nearly as dynamic and cool if the pylons were stuck straight up. Not to mention that Legacy's pylons do get in the way of some sword posing due to being static, which you can see by this hyper advance diagram I have here.

Rubbish is the only one. I got two kits and his recolored set so I could use the secondary face, then bought two more Wreck-Gars and an extra Junkheap. I've got Wreck-Gar, Junkheap and Rubbish, plus two made up guys I have yet to name. I just did a lot of parts swapping and repainting between them to try to make them more unique.

A lot of them actually do glow pretty well, depending on the plastic they're made of. I can confirm the new Terrorsaur, Siege Skylynx, Legacy Blaster, both Tyrannocon Rex and JP93, Kingdom Beast Megatron (his eyes in both modes and his T-Rex underbelly), Doubledealer, Legacy Buzzsaw, SS86 Jazz, Gen Selects Tigertracks, Battle Across Time Mirage (but not Grimlock), all three Rainmakers, Redwing, Tricranius, parts of SS86 Cyclonus, the eyes and beast mouth of T-Wrecks, all effect parts, and any 'bot with clear plastic parts (like Siege Ultra Magnus' chest or Earthrise/Siege Optimus Prime's chest) all glow pretty nicely. A lot of older figures glow, too - my Beast Machines Scavenger, the orange part on Beast Machines Battle Unicorn's mane/axe, Beast Machines Skydive (original orange/purple release), Universe Magna Stampede and Stockade, T30 Cosmos, and my Botcon 'G2' Cindersaur also look quite nice, to name a few.

Transformers Classics Astrotrain

This is right next to Prime as the best Classics toy.
It's hard for me to make objective statements about it since I like it so much.
You can tell by the paint scuffs how much play time this toy has.

He's a fun little space shuttle you can whoosh around. He's got a place to store his gun underneath.
Few complaints include the zero paint on the thrusters and a slightly undersized tail fin.
I'm not even that bother about the halves of a train bolted to the side of a space shuttle.

Astrotrain is very hefty for a deluxe. About 60% heavier than modern deluxes.

I was 100% behind Classics reinventing the characters a bit.
Like, why wouldn't an Astrotrain toy have a more modern alt mode?

That said this bullet train isn't going to get a passing grade from any train autists.
For a deluxe sized triple changer it's a pretty good job though. There's a good balance of dedicated sculpt and engineering for both alt modes.

Astrotrain doesn't roll super well despite having half a dozen castors.
But you can pretend he' still rocket powered

I don't know what it is about this toy that appeals directly to me specifically.
There's something to the stature. The way the shape of the helmet meets the shape of the shoulders.
I like it!

I can report that Classics Astrotrain is far from the most dancingest toy out there.
He's missing a few pieces of articulation.
Including waist, wrists and ankles, obviously.
No thigh or bicep swivels, but he does have a swivel below the knee and ball elbows. That's sort of the same, right?

Astrotrain has that signature bit of Transformers design where the thigh is one fifth as long as the boot.
People gripe about the train panels sliding back of the arms. But if you put just the tiniest natural bend to the arms that stops happening.

Something about Classics just feels so apt for it’s title. They never quite recaptured that post UT, pre movie feel in other lines. Simultaneously they feel like a retro design, a UT design, and like something we could’ve gotten if there was a vehicle line alongside Beast Wars( Protoman claims Hot Rod and starscream were based off late 90s designs). Classic, yet the of the era.

This list is good, but I'd like to add Siege Skylynx to it (Simple transformations for all three forms, but super fun nonetheless and eh looks awesome. Also, there's something extremely satisfying about those ratchet joints), as well as either Ultra Magnus (The vehicle mode isn't spectacular, but that power armor is a fun gimmick. Cool little robot that bulks up into big, armored robot is an awesome idea that I would have liked to see used more often). Fossilizers are cool, too, but they're literally partsformers, so not for everyone; the stuff you can do with them if you're creative and have a bunch of them on hand is incredible, though.

I picked up a SS86 Slug a couple weeks ago and he's pretty great. Dino mode is big but cute according to the wife, whereas I really like the robot mode for its posing options. I regret not buying the other Dinobots when I had the chance. Scalper prices for me!

What could you possibly want from a remake that the original didn't do? To even make it comparable they'd have to sell it at a commander budget which is around what you can regularly get one for anyway. Sometimes cheaper.

Because trains have lots of windows, and molding and entire piece in clear plastic and painting it is cheaper than making the window into a separate piece.

We can only hope that the MP line is using a stronger mix for clear plastic, like the older CHUG toys used to, and that their paint is more durable than it has been.

Given the fact that they had the license for over a decade, the art for IDW Transformers was actually really great far more often than it was bad. The C-list artists really only moved in after the 2019 continuity reset.

The worst IDW had before that was Ramondelli, who wasn't even horrible; his linework was sloppy and his color choices sometimes made things look muddy or monotonous, but at least he had style.

I'd be sort of content with the Siege version, but the hollowness definitely sucks and mine's got a floppy shoulder. Cool weapon though. Earthrise meanwhile doesn't fix the major problems of the Siege mold while somehow making it worse with partsforming and a compromised vehicle mode, ON TOP of every version being a store exclusive of some kind, which is really emblematic of Earthrise's problems as a whole.
It sucks because I could honestly see either of them being actually good with just a little more effort but instead they just felt half-finished. Hopefully SS86 turns out good this time but I'm not holding my breath

If I were to guess that would be because of the smaller amount of R&D required and less logistics work.

Not the one who originally did it, but on the tail you completely cut out the blue plastic in the circled area, then on the left hand (or both if you want) you carve these little divots into the top and bottom of the hand all the way to the hole, and on the head you also carve a very little bit out of the circled areas, just enough to give the hole in the hand something to latch onto. Go slowly and carefully with carving out the hand and head parts, you don’t want to take off too much material.

Having skipped the original Kingdom Core Megatron when he came out, I just ordered the 'G2' colored Legacy one from Amazon to use as a stand-in for Megastorm to put with my BWII Galvatron (Yes, I'm aware of the difference in scale - I hated the face on the Earthrise G2 Megatron too much to get that version, and I don't mind the difference in scale, since it makes Galvy look huge and intimidating by comparison). he's okay, what you see it pretty much what you get. pretty well articulated since his limbs are all balljoints and he has waist and neck swivels, but his shoulder and back kibble can get in the way. You can move the back kibble out of the way or even unclip it without consequence if you really want it gone, and you could cut off the shoulder kibble permanently with only minor cosmetic differences in altmode if it really bothers you, but I haven't felt the need.

Looks like originally the velocitron set was gonna be various retools but apparently at some point they got the budget to do 2 full molds.
I'm guessing reducing the number of retools gave them the budget to focus on cosmos and override
Which is why Road Rocket is a straight repaint of arcee instead of having even the basic remolding to make it look the slightest bit more like the original self.

From reading Mark’s commentary on Instagram, it sounds like the reason they got entirely new molds for Override and Cosmos is because TakaraTomy figured out how to fit all their parts on few enough molded sprues that they could make entirely new figures with the same number of sets of new tooling as if they’d been partial remolds.

See pic related. Here, when Mark says, “mold,” I don’t think he’s referring to the whole figure like when we all tend to use the word, otherwise what he’s saying doesn’t make any sense (SS Hot Rod having molds, plural? Override being four molds even though she’s just one figure?). He’s probably referring to sets of tooling that put all the parts on sprues molded in each plastic color.

So, it sounds like Override remolded from Hot Rod would’ve required four new sets of tooling to be made, but Takara figured out how to fit all the parts for the entire figure on that many sprues. And the same for Cosmos needing three new sets of tooling as a BB remold, but getting all his parts as a fully new figure out of that same number of sets of tooling.

My question is, does that mean they each have a lot less plastic used to make them than regular figures? After all, Cosmos’s arms are crazily hollow. Or maybe they just have fewer parts over all?

I notice it' very Prime in the face. The smoothness of the face and the way the horns are make it look that way to me.

The combination has the most dedicated articulation. By that I mean shoulder, hips, elbows and knees.

So I’m wondering if they had to cut out superfluous pieces, or hollow out parts even more than they’ve already been doing in order to nest so many pieces together with each other on so few sprues, or something else similar.

Who knows, maybe they just managed to Tetris them all together super efficiently, in which case there might not be any downsides. But it’s also possible they had to cut some corners to do it, which could end up having drawbacks for the figures themselves.

Use the back as the chest while also moving the small backpack kibble to the shoulderpads (like the drift mold).

Gen drift was a good base, it just needed to rotate the windshield to the back, like what the did with SS86 jazz double waist swivels..

Them and Stakeout were the "ok I'm only getting these because they look great" micros when they were announced. I have all the 2-packs minus Ratbat/Red now. The big-shoulder cars are probably the weakest molds, but the rest of the micros are pretty fun. There's quite a lot of teams so just have a compilation of the bios. Should be the Battle Squad, Military Patrol, Race Track Patrol, and the brown and blue-green cars are M.A.S.K. guys. Seems the back half of the yellow combo is from the Metro Squad but not the former? Feel free to make your own neat personalities for them.

The transformation is both simple yet unusual in that it turns Shockwave completely around versus his Siege version's transformation; the feet become the gun barrel/nosecone and his arms become his boosters, while his head tucks in and a pair of wings fold out from his back (which double as a cool little jetpack for him in bot mode). The radar dish (a handheld weapon of sorts that can be pegged onto his shoulder in bot mode when not in use, as seen in the previous pic) can then mount to a tiny peghole on top to make it look more 'spaceship-y'. That 5mm peg can also be used to mount the mini Shockwave(s) directly to another 'bot when he's in spaceship/gun mode, so long as the peghole is long enough to accommodate most of the peg - though small, Core Shcokwave still has a bit of weight to him, so you need to pick a hole that can hold him securely. The holes near the middle of my big Shockwave's 'tailcoats', for example, are too shallow even though they're the right size; the holes near the top of his extra backpack piece, however, work perfectly.

Both look really good mounted to big Shockwave's armored-up vehicle mode; mine's the Galactic Man repaint, so the colors don't really match, but I imagine they'd blend right in on the normal colored version. They add quite a bit of additional weight, though, so you'll need a sturdy stand with good load tolerance if you're going to display him like this. Alternately, just keeping them in spaceship mode lets Shockwave have his own little fleet of minions that can form up around him in a defensive formation.

These little guys are really fun - I didn't think I'd enjoy them as much as I do, and I'm thrilled that they make perfect Targetmasters, though with a lot more poseability and more of a transformation. While I wasn't initially sold on the idea of getting Core-class versions of characters I already had a bigger version of (which is why I only owned Rattrap and Iguanus), these two work perfectly as cloned minions for Siege Shockwave (which wouldn't be too out of place canonically) and seem to have been designed with the intent of having them interact with bigger sizeclass figures. A fun buy overall, and totally worth grabbing a pair of them.

The only core figure I own is Soundwave (BB Ravage doesn't count) since I don't want to shill out for the Netflix figure, the fact that Shockwave is essentially a targetmaster is what sold me on getting him when I would have passed otherwise.

Yeah, I feel that it's not only redundant, but depending on how you're displaying your collection, it makes things a bit confusing as to why some characters have mini-me's running around the battlefield; Shockwave's an exception, because him having a few clones of himself that also happen to turn into weapons he can interact with (in multiple ways, no less) seems like something he'd do in-universe. Also, now we can actually have other characters hold and use him in gun form, so even if you aren't up for the clone idea, there's still that.

Yes it's unchanged. I've had me Bee for a while now and transformed it a good few times and looking at it as I type this, I don't see any stress marks or damage, so I'm not sure it's a major issue maybe in a couple of years it might be.

I'd be more worried about the paint scratching but my Bee doesn't have any signs of that either.

I have him holding his gun like a cane. Injury/health problems means he sort of needs his cannon for stability when he's not using it (his toy can stand and aim his cannon fine). Growl's bio says he's not really interested in overthrowing Bombshock, so I have it as Bombshock looking out for him and Growl being loyal to him out of appreciation. Was immensely disappointed with Growl at first, but this made him a bit endearing.

Do you have the Comboner Wars mold? How would it compare? I have Siege and two CW Shockwaves, unsure if I'd want Core Shockwave, he's one of my favourite characters though.

Transformers Generations Combiner Wars Bombshell

The second step in Generations actually getting serious about making the Insecticons.

What can be said? Bombshell looks like Bombshell. A purple and black bug boy. With a couple yellow and red spots for good measure.

He's got six individually hinged legs. Which is more than they had to do.
There's something to this design in my mind that hasn't been fully captured in plastic
Opposed to Kickback whose G1 and TR toys both feel like very good translations of the concept into reality.
Which is why so far I've skipped Legacy Kickback so far since he'd feel redundant. I don't know if I 'll say the same when we see the new Bombshell next year or the year after.

Bombshell is a stack of a half dozen ball joints and three swivels.
Ball joints at the shoulders, elbows. and hips. Swivels at the thighs and waist.
I guess there are some hinges too for the knees and some butterfly motion of the shoulders.

Something about Bombshells proportions doesn't look quite right. His head is too small for one.
But think both his arms and torso are too long?
The super stubby thighs don't help.

Has there's been any art of Bombshell as a busty bombshell?
That's an original idea no one has come up with before.

Weirdly enough I have some Henkei figures from back in the day that had this same thing happen to the grey plastic on all of them - Megatron, Galvatron and Octane, maybe others besides. The only common thread was that they were stored in laminate wooden cabinet for some time, makes me wonder if the plastic is absorbing chemicals from its surroundings causing the grey to yellow.

Yellowing plastic is nothing new, and grey and white plastics normally don't age the best anyway.

The issue with these recent ones is how quickly they're yellowing, which suggests a new issue with the plastics being used.

i figure energon basically is energy, it's only condensed into "matter" the way that compressed gas can become a liquid to fill a container more efficiently, but once it escapes it immediately converts back to gas under normal pressure.

I skipped both mainline and netflix releases of primal so far because I really fucking want a mouthplate version. Hopefully they do a toy colored one eventually, especially if it has that badass mouthplate.
