Absence also makes the heart grow fonder. BDSP is still derivative of the traditional Pokemon gameplay. Paper Mario moved away from being an RPG into a weird Adventure game with turn-based battles while the last
(in both ways you can think of) Mario & Luigi was released back in 2018/2019, and that was a remake that nobody played. The last original M&L game was Paper Jam back in 2015, but people didn't like how bland it came off as, so for them the last was Dream Team which was 10 years ago, good lord.
All that to say that not only has a Super Mario RPG remake always been a crapshoot, but it's filling a niche that no longer really exists in the series.
