Today rn if someone started playing USUM they would too have to spend hours on end getting all existing mons to fill their dex so I see no difference. You spend hours catching or hours trading or breeding either way. Secondly "it was only a handful of mons" is a non-factor, the result is that you still need someone to trade with who has BOUGHT the other version in order to fill your dex, how many mons you need till you reach 100% is unimportant.
