I'm used to being able to have at least a foot in the door before being chewed up by a gym leader or important battle to see where I went wrong and slightly adjust movesets at most or simple rearrange my team for better switching strategies. Official games seriously do coddle its players even back during Red and Green.
Clover comes with the expectation of you being utilitarian with your team. You're not gonna go into this Karenfagging and come out on top unless you just so happen to like some of the busted players like Semdemen. You see a new pokemon encounter, you catch that pokemon and you bring it up to speed with the rest of your team as you go along and bank it for if you ever need it. If you do this from the get-go, the amount of grinding is borderline nonexistent. You don't even need to target EVs.
