The slice-of-life stuff doesn't mesh well with serious stuff preceding it, is one reason, I'd wager. SM has been very hit-or-miss as a whole, really.

Yes. Might not be to your tastes but comedy is far more more appropriate for the series than a one sided romance.

The comedy in both shows is pretty different though, also did you never watch OS ?
Pokémon is not a shonen, is a fucking familiar anime with a bit of plot and slapstick

The ratings in XY were shit as well. Most of the league/Zygarde episodes and all of the Amourbait episodes didn't even rank in the top ten the weeks that they aired.

Not really. The ratings for XY's first year were relatively high compared to what they are now. They didn't drop low until halfway through 2015.

It's never a series thats taken itself very seriously. Pokémon has to be super kid friendly so it makes more sense to make it a light hearted comedy.

It's still gotten worse. The Anime has gotten more and more unpopular as time has gone on (each Series is more unpopular than the last, both in the US and Japan, OS had higher ratings than AG, AG higher than DP, DP higher than BW, BW higher than XY, and SM is XY tier with 3.2's on average).

The Pokemon Anime's dub has also gotten worse, too, XY-SM is considered the all time low by most fans for it (and it's also the most unpopular era of the dub now, 0.31-0.4 (400k-800k) these days for SM dubbed on Disney XD.

You can be kid friendly and serious, the old anime did it, Digimon did it, many popular shows do it, the only reason Pokemon has made this shift is because stupid stuff sells the most, why Teen Titans GO, Minions & even The Emoji Movie are so successful.

Though it's true popularity isn't always indicative of quality, it also isn't always wrong either.

Well, in Japanese anyway, because DP is when the dub started going to shit (that said the DP dub is still better than it was for the second half of BW, XY, and SM).
