Gen I was simple as hell. I mean, look at Brock here. All he had was white t-shirt and fucking pair of jeans. In the actual games he didn't even have the shirt.
Earlier generations had fairly realistic towns and characters. The whole atmosphere back then was real-life, but with Pokemon.
That being said, I'm fine with the more wacky trainer designs we get now. It sort of gives Pokemon its own distinct style now.
