As a 1999-let I only really got into pokemon with Gens 3 and 4 (first game was Fire Red), so I'm probably inherently biased towards those two generations, but....
I agree with your statement on 3 pokemon wise, and can see why it matches Persona 3 (I've only played a very tiny amount of F.E.S). Held items, abilities, 'upped the stakes' when it came to the story, so to speak, with Team Aqua and Magma and the box legends.
Gen 4's my favorite gen, barely edging out Gen 3 due to the Phys/Special split and slightly less shit movepools without TMs. Persona 4's also my favorite Persona game due to how fucking comfy it is. The setting, the gang's chemistry, the social links, all great.
Gen 5...hm. When I first played through it as a kid I didn't really care at all about 'no old pokemon until post-game' thing. Lots of pokemon designs that I liked, though I didn't really think much about the story. Was also the first gen I joined in on the pre-release hype cycle. The feeling I had with Zoroark and the starter silhouettes is still clear in my mind, and it was great. Hell, I even remember being super amazed, for some reason, at Castelia City looking the way it was. Looking back I think I view black/white less fondly than I did as a kid, but B/W2 are still fantastic games and make up for it. Persona 5's better than P4 from a strictly gameplay point of view, probably, but I feel like it takes a step back in a lot of other aspects. Location wasn't comfy as fuck, didn't really care for the main cast, the story was 'meh' (though P4's wasn't the pinnacle of excellence either), and overall just don't really care for it as much as I do P4.
