Lost hope after playing SwSh, already owned a Switch so I wanted to see how they managed the hardware switch. Not well. PLA and SV has only further moved away from the overworld exploration I enjoy while also showing that battles aren't that important anymore.
I particularly don't like the move to remove all random battles and put all encounters in the overworld. Perhaps I've been conditioned to enjoy the moments of whether or not an encounter will be what I'm searching for, or simply walking into a new area not knowing what I'll find, but overworld encounters completely removes that experience and replaces it with what feels like window-shopping.
I can see why people would like it (cuts down on time spent, can usually avoid battles altogether, shiny hunting etc) but it entirely changes the game and if you don't like it then it means half of the franchise's appeal suddenly disappeared. Add onto the fact that set mode was removed and trainers don't engage you on sight tells me that the path GameFreak has chosen is to be as similar to Pokemon Go as possible while still retaining the bare minimum of what makes a classic Pokémon game. I'm not surprised people enjoy it, it just isn't for me anymore.
