Safe plays means minimizing luck. Minimizing damage to you/ keeping momentum.
It'll come from practice. Generally though, you can figure out a player's "style" within the first couple turns. Look up fighting game conditioning and mindgames. Different genre, but competitive games like this aren't really about strategy (that's really just at the team building stage). They're more about getting inside your opponents head. If playing on showdown, feel free to troll/bait in chat. Talking shit can tilt players even if not face to face. Play safe at first until you get a feel for your opponent, then use their habits against them (whether they be strengths/weaknesses). Hope that helps.
