ORAS was pretty mediocre, I didn't realize it at the time but it was definitely a portent of things to come. It also set the precedent that BDSP followed of rolling back the third version changes that made the game objectively better.
I will fully admit that I had a great deal of fun with the XY/ORAS era, but that was more due to multiplayer and my friends being into it rather than the quality of the games themselves.
XY are also the only post-3d games I've replayed more than once, mostly due to the lack of story meaning it's easy to just... play the game.
The topic of dialogue and cutscene spam in SM/USUM has been beaten to death, so I'll skip bitching about that. Instead, I'll bitch about the endless cut content that never saw the light of day.
The golf course and kahili in general, the five or so caves you can't actually enter or just skip through like the volcano, lake of the sunne/moone, the fossil park, the empty lots, ten carat hill... it just goes on and on. Absolute waste of potential, worse than XY in that regard.
But for all its faults, gen 7 does make up a sizable portion of my favorite 'mon designs. They didn't drop the ball there at least.
I did not play any gen 8 games, and I do not plan to do so at any point. None of them appeal to me.
And finally, as for gen 9, I thought it was absolutely terrible. The game is all "style" with no substance. From technical issues to moveset errors to horrible pacing and complete lack of a coherent difficulty, you can tell that they genuinely did not care in the slightest while making the game. Some of the mons have grown on me, but most of them are forgettable at best or offensively bad at worst. Paradox mons are also just a shitty retread of UBs, which pisses me off because I really, really love the UBs.
Also, open world is a shitty meme that needs to die already.
