Even then, I remember Contestshipping being way more popular than Advanceshipping since most people still assumed Ash loved Misty, and there was obviously quite a bit of tension between May and Drew. It wasn't until DP that most people started to write off Pokeshipping. Before Misty left, she was the only possible love interest for Ash aside from obvious gag and crack ships like Redshipping, Palletshipping, and Leagueshipping, so everyone just assumed from the hints given in the anime and movies that they would eventually become a couple. The "Pokeshipping" fandom were just people (mostly girls) who drew Ash x Misty art and wrote romantic fanfics. Everyone else either didn't care or just assumed that Ash x Misty was already canon. Pokeshipping is called Pokeshipping because it was literally the only remotely canon ship from Pokémon aside from perhaps Rocketshipping (which basically a gag ship anyway).
