In the dub, the XY version of "Gotta catch em all" was created by the same musician that did "Unbeatable" for 4kids final dub season back in gen 3.
Kind of ironic since gen 6 is heavily tied to gen 3

It wasn’t created by Siegler, Goldfarb just decided to credit him as he was doing a (bad) remix of his theme from Gen 1. The Gen 6 OG theme Remix was a Goldfarb/Sad Truth thing.

A part of me thinks someone on the writing staff was looking for ways to distinguish Trip from Paul, and the idea came that rather than have a rival look down on Ash for his training style, have him think Ash is a joke because of the region he comes from. Thing is, you can disagree with Paul's attitude and argue his approach can do more harm than good, but at least there's a discussion to be had. With Trip, there's no argument; judging someone based on where they come from is just dumb.

Don't even bother unless you're watching subbed. I watched a few clips of dubbed XY to give it a chance, but it is straight garbage. The BGM and character voice diction sound like one of those preschool shows like Paw Patrol. Really the newer art styles suck too. The only thing the newer seasons have on the OS are the battle scenes, which can be full of sakuga when they want them to be. Everything else is inferior to OS, AG, and even DP.

OS-DP is the original timeline.

OS has really good original art and a very cool theme(no music) to it. but some of the animations do not hold very well. misty and brock don't really do much

AG is a nice transition from old to something new but is somewhat forgettable. some of the "darker" aspects that the OS series alluded to are retconned. a lot of the original feeling is lost.

DP is the best series in my option with a great story, the best rivel, evil team, characters, and girl. A lot of new world-building is introduced that makes DP feel like it's part of a bigger world. the fillers are something the people have a problem with within this series. DP felt like it should have been the end of the anime, so many people mark it as the end of the original series timeline.
DP is my personal favorite

BW is a soft reboot of the anime and is frustrating to watch but it has its moments
some unfortunate events IRL stopped an entire arc from airing so that also does not help

xy is the most isolated from the other series it does not feel part of the timeline. plot-wise its not super good, but the animation is fine I guess.
the characters are one-dimensional with Ash having no personality.

SM is ok but slow, the art style is hard to adjust too. not many battles a lot of fun laid-back filler.

JN is also ok but has a lot of lost potential and because of that you get mad thinking of all the things they could have easily done but did not.
chloe is slow to move, gohs ok. the character's returns were my favorite

MPM is so far a waste of time but it is not over yet

If it was only about the reserves, they would have shown them off in JN and just ended the series with Ash becoming champion. We already know that Ho-oh will reappear and Team Rocket will be getting some kind of sendoff with all their reserves, so I find it hard to believe that Misty and Brock won't get moments as well. I feel you're overstating the impact the anime has on the brand as a whole. Way more people buy the games than watch the anime. It would be fascinating to see just how many people that play Pokemon GO and/or the Switch games would even recognize Ash. Ho-oh has reappeared in the past, most recently JN136, and it had very little impact on the story or Ash. The TRio episode, for me, is the big test. If it's handled really well, and we get some big resolution out of it, then I'll say there's a chance Misty/Brock are going to get some big moments as well, and that Pokeshipping has a chance. Otherwise, if the TRio episode amounts to nothing, then I expect the same will be true for the final two episodes.

The anime is the only reason Pokémon even became popular outside of Japan. Ash and Pikachu have been the faces of the Pokémon brand since the anime debuted. The only reason more people play the games now is because most people who were attached to the 4Kids dub and hadn't dropped it by AG were turned off by the voice actor switchover. The terrible state of the English dub for the past 15 years is the only reason the anime isn't popular over here anymore except in the 10 and below demographic who don't know any better. It's still very popular in Japan.

Roy is from Kanto. It exists. We'll bare minimum get mentions of prominent Gen 1 characters like Professor Oak, Ash, Misty, etc. A guest appearance by well known side characters is fairly likely. Probably more likely than seeing Ash himself since they'll wanna save him for something important.

Pokemon was gaining steam in the US before the anime got popular. Everybody was into the Gameboy games Red and Blue. My first exposure to Pokémon was noticing lots of kids talking about it at school, along with mew and pokegods rumors and shit like that. THEN the anime started getting popular and the trading cards became a big craze but it DEFINITELY started with the games.

At least it did in the US. Sometimes I forget that most 4chan posters aren't from the US anymore.

Red and Green's explosive popularity in Japan is why the anime was made and why it was decided to export both the games and anime at the same time. Fuck you faggots are stupid as hell. They did watch it. But they were more into the games. Younger kids were also into the games. Trust me, this was the only time my loser ass had a "social life" so I remember it pretty good. And those games (and rumors about them) were goddamn ubiquitous. If you did not have Red or Blue or a gameboy you at least knew somebody who did. That was me actually, I never had a gameboy, but no less than five kids I regularly spoke with had one and all of them were hopping on that Pokemon bandwagon. And their younger siblings and family members were following their lead - and watching the anime.

The point being that the games were all the buzz back then at the very start. It wasn't until shortly after this period of Red and Blue popularity that kids started memorizing the PokeRap and naming their character Ash, and then the anime REALLY blew up when they started teasing the Mewtwo movie. That was when the anime hit its absolute zenith in popularity and eclipsed the games entirely. I still remember trying to draw Armored Mewtwo for several of my friends back then, and lying that there was a way to get it.

Same thing about parents travelling a lot leading me to go to different schools.
I changed schools probably a dozen times and I honestly can't remember anyone ever talking about the anime, dragon ball and later on naruto completely dominated any anime discussions. The closest to 'Ash' I ever saw were the occasional cosplay, but even then I vaguely remember them calling themselves pokemon trainers and not Ash Ketchum

Thanks to 4kids 90% of all versions of the pokemon anime are forever based on the english dub instead of japanese.
On top of that nearly every langauge uses a version of Gotta Catch Em All instead of MPM.
For all in tents and purposes the US version of Pokemon is the international one, not the japanese one.
At this point, thanks to Detective Pikachu (the highest grossing pokemon movie ever made) there is now a japanese version of the english dub's theme song, while the reverse does not exist yet.

The first Pokemon movie is still the highest grossing anime movie in the west by a massive amount, and inflation-adjusted 2000 is second. And the entire subplot of that movie is how Misty has feelings for Ash that she won't admit. So Pokeshipping is definitely well known enough globally to warrant a conclusion in an otherwise non-romance oriented show.

Not wrong, actually, 100% right. How TPCi has had the dub license for close to two decades and has gotten worse than ever before at dubbing Pokemon is stunning, to say the least. At least 4Kids had good Movie dubs and Pikachu Shorts to balance out the mediocre Anime dub at the time, TPCi doesn't have anything to balance out their awful Anime dub now- even recent Movies have lousy VA work from the main cast and Cathcart's Team Rocket script writing is still unbearable.

They realize they can dub terribly and there's still an audience of 10 year olds and dumb diehard older fans that will like anything Pokemon does like zombies, is why the quality continues to hit unimaginable new lows with the Pokemon dub to answer that. They are riding off of the video games' popularity at this point, period, no one gives a damn about the Anime in the West these days.

The dub went downhill in BF, some argue earlier, but it was still tolerable the whole original run at least even if waning in the Anime. But it became unlistenable and unwatchable from XY to the present day, to most.

I can imagine if 4Kids dubbed Mastermind at least the voice acting would've been listenable and no "Knock his block off," "psyched," dialogue from Ash or "Sometimes I CAN do the right thing" from May etc. We may have had dub music, but it would've still been better than Ed Goldfarb's stuff since 2014 as well, since they didn't treat Specials like Movies or Pikachu Shorts where Japanese OST was kept religiously in their later years.

I find it hilarious how some defend TPCi's writing: it's one of the WORST things about the dub after the change, not a good thing. TPCi hired the worst writer from the later 4Kids (also nu-Oak/James/Meowth/Butch) and promoted him. James Cathcart then proceeded to turn the dub's writing into making Team Rocket the most unlikeable characters in the Series in English, and google translated everything else with jaded 1980s slang tossed in and alliterations like "Raise the roof," "Foot on the gas" etc. Say what you will, but at least the 4Kids' writing team had some actual wit when not being too punny, at times.

At least you could get a laugh out of his in AG, Cathcart's is not even funny: between the alliterations and the nasally old man who is goofy/shouts TOO...it doesn't fit.

I think 4Kids did a better job with pretty much everyone that said (go check any voice comparison, on YouTube, Plebbit, BTVA, etc.) and Taylor wins decisively with Ash, May, Delia etc. I find it odd how James is the voice most normies miss the most from the 4Kids dub, considering Eric Stuart was better as Brock, Magikarp Salesman, and even Butch towards the end than with him (though Eric Stuart was the best dub James even then).

I think Misty, Brock, May, Max, Delia, Professor Oak, James, and Meowth got the most fucked by the current dub cast in both voice acting and writing/dialogue.

A key part of the "burden" exchange is Melody's reaction. Throughout the movie Melody saw Misty as a punching bag to playfully banter with. They have a shot of her being taken aback by Misty's declaration and then it clicking.
This is all the proof I need that the romantic implication was always there in the original. Though I personally cannot say this means much NOW I personally think we're getting a platonic ending because it's been so long and the anime is so watered down now

Re: TPCi's DP dub, that is indeed when their Team Rocket went to utter shit and for the rest of the last decade TPCi TRio has been unbearable outside of Season 14 BW when they were forced to write them straight as serious Rockets for 1 year.

BW actually had a better dub than DP at first, it was the second half where it petered off.

XY onward is unwatchable in English, period, you even see people who grew up with the TPCi dub saying JN is the worst of the Pokemon dub over 25 years without question. It goes to show how low quality it is, no one but the biggest stans like the dub now- no one.

Eric Stuart's Brock voice is pretty much just a less severe version of his Kaiba voice, but his James voice is more silly. 4Kids James is pretty hilarious, so that's why I always liked him. Rachael Lillis' Misty voice has always been the best female voice of the English dub, so I know the upcoming dub of MPM won't be able to match it.

Reminder Brock came before Kaiba in the dub, but Eric Stuart either way was a perfect fit for both characters in English: Bill Rogers turned Brock into a deep voice old man, can't stand his take. Origins and Masters' Brock while not Stuart's, are both better than Rogers' take on him, IMO.

Eric Stuart's James was perfect from mid Kanto up until mid Johto- you could laugh at his, but also take the character seriously: then the shouting and goofiness got overdone later on, but still, he was always better than James Cathcart's James. Dub James, like TPCi's Brock, now just sounds like an old man except with a cold in James' case.

The dub of MPM is going to be garbage: Goldfarb music, check, current dub VAs phoning it in, check, and I bet they put psyched and dig it in the scripts as well because Cathcart thinks that's how to be funny with google translate. Sub/Japanese Version all the way, fuck the current dub.

Part of me hopes someone one day DeepFakes all of Season 9, they least cheapy the cheapskates at TPCi could've done is let the original Pokemon dub cast finish off AG since they dubbed all of OS and 75% of that Series before getting permanently ousted because they went cheap on producing the dub.

They supposedly upped the budget after BF and DP Season 1/the post-4Kids TAJ dub during the early DuArt era, hence we got some old 4Kids VAs for recurring roles and more of the Japanese music for 3 or so seasons, but then TPCi cheapened out again in Season 15 and every season got progressively worse until XY onward.

On that note, Ash's current dub VA Natochenny is as much an Amourfangirl as Lisa Ortiz/Cathcart is (those two were around since S1 ironically), so there's that (makes sense, she's pretty much an actual model/pretty woman in real life even if I did not really care much for her voice acting over the years, no wonder she likes Serena so much out of all the female companions since Sarah is more like her than Ash IRL).

Ash's original dub VA Taylor, jury is still out, based on her Tweet likes she's a total Pokeshipper fan girl but that makes sense because OS was the only Series they got to dub the whole way through-- although she liked voicing May during AG, too, might be a closet AdvanceShipper as well (again, logical).

I think everyone will lose this one, though.

Tbf XY killed the PokeAni English dub for the main Series outright, I do get where you're coming from.

Up until then, you could argue which dub was better, but XY is when TPCi became guilty of the same visual edits people held only against 4Kids until then and the two dubs were equally mediocre on music changes towards their ends in AG/BW by that point...and then TPCi ended up changing more of the OST than 4Kids ever did the last 3 Series in a row.

Trivia: The only episodes that keep 0% of the Japanese music are all in the TPCi dub for the main Series. That's right, 4Kids never hit the level of suck TPCi did with the main Anime dub, ever.

Just give it up already. Pokeshipping was literally the default opinion from 1997-2002/2003 when Misty was replaced with May in AG. Even then, I remember Contestshipping being way more popular than Advanceshipping since most people still assumed Ash loved Misty, and there was obviously quite a bit of tension between May and Drew. It wasn't until DP that most people started to write off Pokeshipping. Before Misty left, she was the only possible love interest for Ash aside from obvious gag and crack ships like Redshipping, Palletshipping, and Leagueshipping, so everyone just assumed from the hints given in the anime and movies that they would eventually become a couple. The "Pokeshipping" fandom were just people (mostly girls) who drew Ash x Misty art and wrote romantic fanfics. Everyone else either didn't care or just assumed that Ash x Misty was already canon. Pokeshipping is called Pokeshipping because it was literally the only remotely canon ship from Pokémon aside from perhaps Rocketshipping (which basically a gag ship anyway).

By that I mean in gen 1 we didn't have this mentality of "only explicit things are true". In gen 1 it was obvious that dragonite is a dragon for example.

Amourkeks also lean heavily on the kiss because they don't want to admit that it was the payoff for their ship, and Serena was never going to be relevant after that. It was a self-contained thing just like the Movie 5 kiss from Latias. If Misty had kissed Ash in Gotta Catch Ya Late, and then never appeared again, then I think most people would have assumed that was the payoff and moved on with their lives. The only reason Pokeshippers have held on for this long is because it was the first ship, and it never got a payoff. In fact it's probably one of the only, if not the only, popular ships from a 1990's series that was never concluded. The payoff for Amourshipping happened over six years ago, and Serenafags still can't let it go. If Serena was endgame, then the Ashime would have ended with XYZ.

In practice they spend billions on pokemon, but at the same time they manage to go months or years without thinking of Pokemon.
The hardcore pokemon obsessed fans still have to rely on their parents to purchase the content for them in many cases and furthermore will pirate the games while a lot of normies dont even know you can pirate videogames.

Most of the money spent on pokemon during pokemania was from parents who couldn't give two shits about pokemon but do care about their kids, now it's a mix of both

Just because adults with jobs don't have time to play every mobile gacha kusoge like mastersex or religiously watch every braindead episode of the Ashime doesn't mean they don't care about Pokémon. Almost all my millennial coworkers are playing SV, and folks who went to high school with me are getting their kids hooked on Pokémon. TPC doesn't care about catering a family-friendly IP to broke teenagers and college students, although I'm sure a lot of zoomers are wasting their money on TCG due to streamers.
