Developers have said that the Gen 5 protagonists are 14, they wanted to make it a point that the games were aging slightly with their audience. This trend continued into X/Y where Serena/Calem were 16-17.
In terms of being comparable to previous protagonists, the Gen 8 characters look closest to Rosa/Nate's proportions, so I am going to guess that they're about 14, which would mimick the previous "aging with the current audience" mentality Game Freak has, considering gen 7's protagonists were all 11. History repeating itself, yadda yadda.
