Or Johto, Hoenn, or Sinnoh Pokémon. Except they were unlocked in BW's post-game. And this whole gimmick was just a way to copy the feel of playing Gen 1 again.

Thankfully B2W2 did away with it.

In XY he was much worse actually. In BW he still felt like Ash and had some creativity in his fights like Ash used to do. In XY he regressed to using the same basic strategies but this time he did not even utalize his team aside from Greninja and did not do anything interesting. Ash at his most boring was in XY and it didn't even feel like the same dude, they retconed a love interest for him out of their ass and nothing happened eaither.

What he means is that they turned Ash into a beginner five episodes after he was in the Sinnoh League semi-finals going head to head with a guy sporting a Darkrai and Latios (both of which he KOs, and nobody had ever KO'd his Darkrai). Several episodes later, he loses to a new Trainer who just got a Snivy while using the same Pikachu that tied with Latios. He also forgets that a Pokémon should be weakened before he attempts to catch it. He also has to look up a Koffing. He also places worse in the Unova League than he did in Sinnoh, the first time he regressed in rankings, and he lost to a guy who forgot that you were supposed to have 6 Pokémon, so he only brought 5 and Ash still lost with that handicap. Then a park ranger with a bunch of Eeveelutions wins the championship.

Ash being a beginner in the early anime was fine when he had an actual personality and the writing was entertaining. In BW, all of his edges have been sanded off so he's just Dragon Ball Super Goku Lite, but nerfed. In XY, he's the same, but they make him a bit more competitive and battle-focused and a lot more competent. He's not interesting though because he's still a fairly flat character this late in the series.

Yes a remake, one necessary to even completing the dex in BW because you needed Gen II legendaries to even access Gen V's shillmon, which apparently not a lot of people had because nobody got Zoroark

Sinnoh is Masuda's true magnum opus. It's the first time he really got a game region and lore right and has been the true basis for the franchise as a whole going forward since games like RS and FRLG were still experimental and didn't even have the Phys/Spec split. It surpasses even BW and XY because these games desperately only function because of DP's success in keeping Pokemon thoroughly established as a strong, Nintendo brand and Lucario remains more beloved than Zoroark or Greninja have to this day

If you're not Kanto, at least be Sinnoh. Most games can't even reach that level. Even Masuda, since he didn't even make the best Sinnoh games, which is why people get mad at Sinnoh nostalgia when it's further proof Masuda IS the one holding Pokemon back
