If you were around during the early XY stuff you remember how disappointed everyone was that there were only 70 new Pokemon, no obvious postgame, etc. That was the first nail in the coffin, considering how much even Diamond/Pearl and Black/White had pushed the threshold before. DP had an entire postgame island, BW with 150+ new Pokemon and an entire postgame segment to the campaign with new routes, stronger trainers Elite Four Champion etc.
So when ORAS came along and players realized Game Freak couldn't even be bothered to design a proper battle facility, people realized the trend of Game Freak short-changing consumers would only continue and the series couldn't be trusted to fully deliver complete or quality games anymore, which it hasn't since.
I unironically think Gen 10 might have a final shot at redeeming the franchise and if it doesn't we might as well reminisce over the older games forever.
