XY still has plenty of depth to the pokemon distribution between fishing rods, berry trees, different colored flowers, pokemon that ambush you in caves, rock smash encounters, pokemon that chase you in the overworld, pokemon hiding in trash cans, etc
funnily enough this is more of a problem in BW where the game actually DOES kill game design and just have nothing but random encounters because they removed fishing rods and rock smash and none of the encounters have any other interesting mechanics. The entire game is "move to next route and catch the 3 new pokemon we slapped there as random encounters"
