He talked about MPM giving Ash an opportunity to forget everything he'd gone through and just go back to being a kid again. That type of pivot makes sense when you a show that persistently deals with things like loss, grief, etc. The type of stuff that force your protagonist to grow up before their time. Pokemon has certainly touched on those topics on occasion, but the show is overall very lighthearted, so the pivot back to "letting Ash be a kid," didn't carry much weight.
