Literally one of the most annoying things about this place these days is how many people get so butthurt about whether or not the rival is an interesting, ""deep"", or rude character.
If you're really still motivated to play Pokemon only to defeat some trivial AI rival with the intelligence of a pea, you need some help. You can find plenty of actual rivals in friends and online players.
This isn't to suggest that people need "handholding" either. The majority of people, even kids now, probably don't care if they lose to a fictional character just as we did. The thing is, this change is safer only because it's a market where kids and casual adults can be distracted by 10s of thousands of other games. Of course for a casual game like go they want the experience to be smooth.
DESU Blue was never even hard. I dunno why people think he was "always one step ahead" but I MIGHT have lost to him once in my original playthrough. Again, MIGHT have, I don't remember because I was like 7, but I don't have any significant memories of being challenged to beat him.
I do agree this new guy's design is absolutely abhorrent though.
