Really wish I played more of BW and B2W2 when they came out. It was the first time my brother that I played the games with lost interest in the series, so I kinda stopped too.

Looking back, I think they were fantastic, especially B2W2. Some of my personal favorites from it:
>The battles looked the best out of any other gen, way better than static sprites and the 3D battles look like shit
>Games still left little secret areas to discover that I love about DPPt
>Finally gave us better differences between versions, and there were actual sequels

Though I really don't care for a lot of the Pokemon introduced, especially the starters, but it still gave us greats like Chandelure, Beheeyem, Excadrill, Zebstrika, Bisharp, etc. B2W2 are truly the last great games in the series and I hate to say that because I really wanted XY to be good.

Maybe I'm just nostalgic, but I feel Gen 4 to Gen 5 was the best time to be a pokemon fan online. There were so many killer fan artists and online nerd hangouts weren't nearly as divisive. Bring back forums and oekakis please. Social media was a mistake.

I have a lot. Sawsbuck is near the top the list. I love the Venipede line, the Litwick line and the Scraggy line too. But Oshawott might beat all those out to be my favourite of all.

I love Bianca!! Her character arc is understated but it's one of the more realistic/sad stories GF's told. I like what N says about her at one point: "Cheren is pursuing the ideal of strength. Poor Bianca has faced the sad truth that not everyone can become stronger. And you are not swayed either way--more of a neutral presence."

I think it's an interesting reversal to have Cheren be an optimistic ideal-leaning character and Bianca to be a harsh truth-leaning character.

...Yeah, BWs story and characters are what's really great about these games. That said, N and Hilbert are my top favourites, and their story is the deserving centrepiece.

Oshawott!! Oshawott all the way. He's so funny. Even though I like him the most of his line, I always evolve him to Samurott, because it's part of his charm that this clumsy little earnest goofball is going to turns into a super coolmon eventually. Also, Snivy is a great visual match for Cheren and Tepig for Bianca. Oshawott's really perfect.

They were all awesome, but Elesa in particular struck me as being different and cool. Even the gimmick with the Emolga Volt Switching in and out was interesting. Also, the music direction is on point, though that's typical of these games.

I agree, even though I started with gen 2, it wasn't until gen 5 that I joined the fandom properly said. What made me want to get involved with the others was seeing how nice they all were, how they loved talking about the games, seeing all the pretty and creative fanart, plus other little things that really made me enjoy every second of it. Those were such comfy years, I'd say it did extend a little bit through gen 6 too, but some months before gen 7's announcement it's like it all went to hell. I just miss those days where we'd just talk about the things we liked and everyone was so calm and nice instead of starting arguments over nothing at every opportunity.

Fuck that's hard. BW has my favorite set in the franchise. I love Galvantula, Serperior, and unironically Vanilluxe. Oh and also Druddigon.

Ice gym is fun to go through. I like how you can see through the ice, and it looks worn from all the skating on top.

There's a lot of great tracks. Route 10 is an obvious one. Also possibly my favorite Elite Four battle theme. Alders encounter theme is great. Also Ns got a great battle theme. I also really like Accumulas town music when you talk to the piano and drums characters, very charming.

I really love BW. As with most, with the Japanese release and the mons released, I hated the designs. However the more I looked at them over the months, the more I fell in love with them. Now I'd say I like or love a good 70 or 80% of them. It's also somewhat tied with BW2, and GS/HGSS and my favorite game in the series. I'm glad I gave it a shot, although many of my friends refused and the ones that did just transferred teams from other games without even giving the new ones a shot. I always feel bad that some people robbed themselves on the only time since the original that we got a whole game of nothing but new pokemon.

I genuinely love 90% of the mons from gen V. Only ones I dislike are stuff like Keldeo.

I still hold by my belief that gen V is the best gen of Pokémon by far. An actual story, genuine character development, a non-static world, more effort than any other game in the series based on amount of mons and little added touches, and that's not even mentioning bw2, which was their attempt at actually listening to the fans' complaints of the first game. Gen V is also the perfect jumping on point for the series, too, imo. It's just so good.

I'll give credit where credit is due: Gen 5 gave me Galvantula. Thought it was cool from the moment we saw its backsprite in that ad, and once it was fully revealed it became my favorite overall. The music is great, aside from the terrible low HP and gym leaders' last Pokemon themes.

I liked seasons, but it worked against the games too. When I played them, I started and finished them in fall/winter in-game so the colors will forever be washed out in my mind. Sad, because otherwise the game has the some of the best spritework in the series.

Hilbert. Definitely Hilbert. I really love his design and playing with his image was definitely nice, since I could jsut pretend that it was me, since we kinda look alike.

Honestly, all of the characters are just so great and well-developed that it would be hard to choose just one favorite.

I really liked N as well. He was such a nice villain and I could even sympathize with him and his ideals. I honestly don't think he deserves all the hate he gets.

At first, I really disliked Bianca and Cheren, but as the game progressed I started to warm up to them, and eventually fell in love with their characters and their own ideals. Out of the two, I guess I like Bianca a tad bit more, but both of them are great characters!

Iris/Drayden's Gym was my favorite one, mostly for its Dragon motifs. I've always liked dragons.

Saying "all of it" would be cheating, but the Team Plasma theme and N's themes would be my favorites. I always got hyped up whenever I heard them.

Honestly, the only pokemon in the dex that disappointed me was Frillish. I love it a lot but can't stand the goofiness of Jellicent. And I know a lot of people do like the pringles man, but I expected something very different.

I'll never forget this theme thanks to the first time I found Volcarona.
Such an amazing mon in such a cool place.

This region gave also me one of my favorite moments in the franchise.

I always play that part of the game at night just for that.

Reuniclus, definitely. I loved it as soon as I saw it and it remains in my top three. But a lot of great Pokémon were introduced in BW, like Archeops, Scolipede, Lilligant, Eelektross (I know it sucks, and I hate that it sucks), Sigilyph, Darmanitan, Ferrothorn (I have a shiny one on my B2 team actually, random wild encounter)

N. I totally understand why he gets the hate he gets, and he's kind of an annoying prick for about 60% of the game. But I still love his character, and desperately wanted him to be able to escape Team Plasma and the life he was wedged into by Ghetsis. Seeing him so happy in BW2 was just the best.

To be honest, this is difficult because the Unova starters really suck and it's a shame. I like Tepig the best, but I did pick it first. Snivy is easily the worst starter I've ever used and I was so happy to ditch it.

Probably Driftveil in BW2. The puzzle was fun and the music is great. I don't really remember any of them very clearly, but that one sticks out to me.
>Favourite BW music?
It's hard to pick one, because I think BW has a great soundtrack overall. Standout favourites for me are Route 10, Black's take on Opelucid, Victory Road (I loved how they handled the badge gates, with the music building up) and the Credit Roll. The whole thing is really solid, though.

I couldn't really get into it when it came out, but looking back on gen 5 and having played it since, it really was pretty damn excellent.

Same here. It's weird because prior to Gen 5 I was a Kanto/Johto baby who played the shit out of but still sort of stuck their nose up at gen 3 or gen 4 because of "it's different so it sucks" syndrome.

There was a lot about gen 5 that stuck out to me immediately as being brilliant, but particularly being put into a game where all the mons are brand new refreshed my systems and made me enjoy Pokemon for something deeper than pure nostalgia. It had a proper impact on me too, loving gen 5 so much made me accept and love gen 3 and gen 4 too, moreso now than 1 and 2.

I think one of the things I love the most from gen5 is the introduction of seasons.
Sure, they made them cycle too slow for a normal playthrough, and you'll normally see 2 if you're lucky during the maingame.

But still, I loved how alive the region felt thanks to them. Even when the changes were just in detail and not that important, that was still a change and you felt the world wasn't like a static painting.
Just like the day/night cycle: it may be just a palette shift, but nobody would deny that having it is so much better for the game's world than not. And just like it happened with the day/night cycle, at the time I was expecting they would slowly improve the seasons for the next games. What a shame.

I have only one complain to this aspect though: the scarcity of seasonal weather.
You would expect to see more rain in autumn, and definitely more snow and hail in winter. But they only gave those precipitations to the eastern part of the region (Driftveil to Opelucid), which are barely a 3rd of the game in BW, and like a 4th in the sequels. To top it off, it only happens half of the days of the month, so you have a lot of chances to go through those zones without ever seeing any drop nor snowflake anyway.
And the only place that gets a significant change with snow is Twist Mountain.
I don't know, I personally missed a second forest in the midgame, that'd get all covered in snow for winter, just like Pinwheel gets full of red for Autumn.

Still, it's probably my favorite feature.
The hell did they have to drop it for the rest of the franchise? It wasn't even a gimmick.

N's journey and march to self-awareness in parallel to your own is one of the reasons I will always say B/W is better than its sequels. Bianca and Cheren were also really nice as a breakdown/expansion on the usual rival tropes.

I like the BW1 protags and N a lot.
Gen 5 is great but its starters are not. I always go for Oshawott though because it's the most okay of the bunch and there are very few water types I want in Unova.

B/W are tied with Emerald as my favorite mainline Pokemon games. I love how it forced you to use new Pokemon and make new bros, and I love the focus on the story. I remember the hype when /vp/ was still a Pokemon General on /v/, and I even remember playing partially translated roms when it came out in Japan. Even got my roommate's kid interested in Pokemon beyond the cards and anime to where he had his mom buy him Pokemon Black the day after I told him about it.

There are so many I liked I actually had to make two teams like I did in Emerald. My absolute favorite though would probably have to be the mons on my main team: Samurott, Liepard, Chandelure, Sigilyph, Sawsbuck, and Mienshao.

By design, Hilbert and Hilda. For character, probably Cheren or Alder, but really all the characters were pretty damn good.

Hmm, probably Skyla's gym for the sheer fact you face plant into a wall because of the fans at one point. Drayden's gym was also nice.

Gen 5 came out when I was 10 and I followed the leaks and announcements for it pretty heavily. I never really appreciated it back then. Looking back on it now, I love the games more than any others in the series. Pic related is my Unova bro, I can't play through without him.

I had so much fun with Gen 4 and 5 online, the fact that its all down is super sad. Thankfully I saved a lot of HA females in my black 2 save, and I have the shiny charm, so I'm not exactly locked out of missing anything thats almost impossible to obtain now.

I'd be really impressed if someone nowadays got the shiny charm without online to help out, it would involve so much transferring.

Just finished playing Black for the first time, haven't played anything since Emerald.

For all the gripes I have about it, I have to give props to the Sound Designer, whoever made the dungeons and towns, and the animators. They really made it come alive for the last sprite generation. There's a certain "intensity" in the game that I really, really enjoyed.

Are there any other titles as story oriented as this? I feel like they could have gone even more in depth with the characters, but there's still a sequel to play I guess.

BW2 is just a straight upgrade in every way, especially Pokemon variety. You actually have some leeway to build a unique team without having to use a ton of shitmons before the game is 95% over, and even the shitmons are still fun and usable.

First playthrough and I'm sad I'm already halfway through, I would say this has been both the best game and the best generation so far, so I hope there is some worthwhile post-game content that has nothing to do with the dead multiplayer.

As much as I love thie fifth gen I don’t particularly like any of the starters. As a first stage Tepig is the best and cutest, but it becomes an abomination. Serperior is the only one worth using and only because it’s a gimmickmon. Ingame, Oshawott is the best but I have no strong feelings for it.
>Favourite BW gym?
Skyla’s first gym for sure. I love the way you splat against the last wall violently and slide down.
>Favourite BW music?
Silent Undella stirs up some childhood beach nostalgia for me.

I love this so much because it adds to the feeling of intensity. It's also why I personally really liked the gym leader last pokemon/1 hp music. It's heartpounding. (Though I understand why this could also have been experienced as annoying.)

It's easy to see why Masuda, a musicfag, sees BW as his magnum opus. It has the most integration of music and story.

Also the music was so creative and surprising. Not that Pokemon music isn't usually great but going so far as to use real voice samples is unique to gen 5 unfortunately. There's such an eclectic influence from rock and jazz as well infusing the tracks. It's really American if America was a charming and friendly place

It's really trivial, but honestly, you look into it and you start to find huge amounts of unnecessary details like this scattered everywhere. It shows the effort they put into polishing this gen.
These games really don't deserve the hate they get.

And pinwheel is amazing in autumn, holy shit (playing with the clock changed).

I'm a bit embarassed, but after the sages I wasn't really feeling it anymore, so I went ahead and started up B&W2!

Oshawott is 2cute so I didn't care much about swapping it out, got a Mareep for its static ability and because light screen+reflect makes it a tough mon.
Apparently Scrafty gets better moves in B&W2 and I love him so much I'm getting him again, I love his ability when paired with rest, and drain punch looks promising.

Not sure what else I'm gonna get, I'll try to be more whimsical this time around.

Eh, it's pretty divisive.
We've had several hate threads just this week due to the culmination of the "stop having threads about what I don't like" guys.
The "lmao unovaborts BTFO again!! they have no arguments!!!!" types are obviously shitposting, and the "everything from gen5 is irredeemable shit, it doesn't have a single good point" are the usual guys unable to see beyond their own hate that every gen has to suffer too.
This board has problems understanding there's a middle ground between "it's a great game" and "everything about it is shit".

But I shouldn't bump everyone into those types; I know there are plenty others without radicalized opinions who just don't enjoy playing these games, it's understandable, that's tastes for you. And seeing as those threads tend to have a 2:1 ratio between posts and posters, it's most probable that there are 2 sides arguing shit, with a loud shitposting minority (rather than being all just the spamming everyone accuses each other from).
Still, the types I mentioned are making discussion free from extreme opinions and full of fallacies pretty hard to have nowadays.

Just like here, the first post is a negative one. But there everyone jumped at gen5's throat.
Gen6 is no favorite of mine, but there are many things I like about it (and a lot of the dex); I would've loved it went like this one, but they killed their own thread out of paranoia.

That's why I'm wondering how the fuck did this thread even managed to stay for more than a week.
Oh well, I had to bear with these types when Hoenn (my fav) was demonized for the first half of the board's life, and then with Sinnoh when it became "the overrated gen" for a while. I guess the same was bound to happen to Unova at some point (although this one had been cooking for a time now).
Good things seem to be polarizing, and not only in pokemon; perhaps that's part of human's nature.
