Even though the text speed is awful, and the pacing gap in the middle of the game made me take a month long boredom sabbatical, I unironically think Gates is the best title in the series.

And here's my reasoning: If it weren't for the self insert isekai autism visual novel plots, I wouldn't give a fuck about pokemon mystery dungeon. A roguelike where you don't die and there's barely any risk is boring as fuck even with Pokemon, and if I want to play Zero Isle/DT I'd rather just play Shiren.

With that said, Gates has the best self insert isekai autism visual novel plot, and it is for that reason that it is my favorite.

GtI actually manages to develop more characters than just the partner, it doesn't rely on amnesia and spam flashbacks to drive the plot, the twist villain is actually a twist, and the ending is the most touching sequence in the series.

Face it, you can't deflates the Gates.

That's a good point, but I'd argue that the gameplay in PMD has its appeal nonetheless.
However, this is also why I think the series needs to have something like the special episodes from Sky, except they play more like Shiren, as well as trying to make Pokémon more unique (Sky was a great step in that direction, with IQ groups and exclusive items)

Unrelated to what I wanted to say, but even if you think GtI's story is executed better than all of Sky, I'm sure you'll agree that Sky feels bigger and greater in every way, lots of people prefer it for that reason alone.

I wouldn't say it's gotten me into other Mystery Dungeons, but Pokemon Mystery DUngeon is what made me try out Etrian Mystery Dungeon Still haven't finished it, too busy smashing which in turn got me into the Etrian Odyssey franchise and I'm thankful for that. I absolutely would love a Pokemon game with gameplay like EO's but I don't think it'd ever come.

Finding this kind of thing isn't so easy if you don't look it up, most of the times it's because some idiot thinks it's "funny" or specifically because he wants to annoy people, but you shouldn't mix those people with those who just draw it. going from thumbs to no thumbs would be hard enough. It's crazy enough waking up from a coma and suddenly feeling a lot lighter, every step you take feels different. Waking up as a tiny animal thing that may or may not be able to stand on two legs? You would panic. I'd imagine the human waking up one morning, trying to stand up out of bed and falling on their ass. The partner would then have to console them.

I disagree. The only thing I prefer in Sky is the roster, the gameplay is the same boring baby Shiren shit, the soundtrack is hampered as fuck by DS midi shit, the sprites are nice but make for boring cutscenes in comparison to GtI and Super, and the postgame was a slog with a retarded plothole villain

Sky's story is longer but it has about half the narrative content. It's really fucking telling when the Special Episodes are the only character development side characters even get. Half of Sky is the partner sucking your dick while saying your name every five seconds and flashing back to five minutes ago, while the side characters are just sitting there unused narratively and making fat albert jokes

Yeah, because Special Episodes are a thing in the first place. GtI handled all of its main characters pretty well during the story, sure, but that's just it. The adventure you go through in Sky is still bigger and more involved. It feels like there's a lot more going on. GtI has more depth, but what happens doesn't feel as exciting.

Gates story has way more exciting oh shit moments, the twist villain is actually competent and has you following them for most of the game, it has the only onscreen death in the series, your character almost gets beat to death after the reveal that tons of other humans were summoned but they all got murdered, you get to invade a flying sky fortress and defuse a nuclear bomb with the power of hope, and the ending sequence is done with much more depth and fanfare, especially considering there's more than one character to say goodbye to.

Best of all it does it with an actual cast of characters, no forced amnesia plot, significantly less flashbacks, and much less plot holes.

One of the same reasons. At least what GtI has is new. GtI even has some positive qualities and you can tell they at the very least tried to make something worthwhile. LGPE is the opposite, they purposefully made it bad, because they knew that there's people who would praise them for that.

Yeah but only because at that point the game is over, feels like a fitting thing to do to end the game. I never play past that point anyway cos there's nothing left to do.

My only real complaint about Explorers is how evolution was just tacked on at the end. I know a lot of people like to stay unevolved in MD but I'd prefer to be able to evolve and hit final stage before Dialga at least (or perhaps second stage for Dialga and final for the post-game). Just adds to the sense of progression and development.
Also the fact that if you want to evolve to final stage at the end, you essentially just skip the middle evolution and do both in one go.

It isn't a good or bad thing, it's a complete non-issue and isn't meaningful to the gameplay at all. You still rank up as fast as you do in the other games because the game is balanced around single missions.

So no, it isn't ridiculous. It doesn't just limit the variety of Pokémon you can find, but also the amount of Pokémon you can play as. You most likely can't use your favorite at all, because it isn't in the game.

Some people like to get all of them. That's not the only reason to want the game to have more monsters, however. In Gates to Infinity you spend a lot of the game fighting the same 30 Pokémon over and over in every dungeon. Not only that, but the layouts are samey as well, and even the graphics aren't that varied. You're supposed to be in an entirely different place, and yet you can still find some of the same layouts in the dungeons.

Gates to Infinity does have some good qualities however. A lot, actually. The problem is that the rest of the game brings it down.

Not really, gen5 pandering wasn't and still isn't a thing. And even when it will eventually be a thing, it will be nowhere near as bad as Kanto. Unova even less than the others, since it's the one region that didn't want to be Kanto.

GtI's key combinations were a huge improvement, but the one in Explorers wasn't bad at all once you figured out how it works. Press X once, it opens the menu. The position of your cursor gets saved in the menu as well as every submenu. Press X in the main menu, and you reach the moves menu. Your cursor is set to the last move you've used. Pressing A or X again twice will use that move. You can assign a move, too. You already have easy access to 2 moves like this, and when you're in the moves menu, you only need to press up or down once or twice. Just like in GtI and Super, there's several other useful key combinations.

I think the interface itself is pretty bad in GtI and, even worse, Super, however. For instance, in Explorers when you want to check your team or the ground you only need to go up or down. I find GtI and Super a lot more confusing in that aspect.

Also there's a thing I don't like about GtI's items, flags seem cool, but I haven't tried them much because you never find them normally. The only way to get them is annoying.

That's not what I said. GtI's dungeons are less varied. The lack of content forces the game to often recycle the same Pokémon, the same layouts and the same graphics. You don't even have dungeons with legendary bosses at the end or other things like that. The only thing that makes the dungeons a bit better in this game is the mysteriousity mechanic.

You see, in order to make DLC seem like a good deal, we've made some Pokémon and some items very rare in the base game, further reducing the chances you see something interesting once in a while.
We even have level reset challenge dungeons with, just like the ones in the base games, no actual reward.
And I haven't even told you the best part yet! Once you buy DLC, you won't be able to listen to the regular main menu music unless you remove your SD card or you delete the DLC, because each DLC dungeon comes with TWO tracks from the DS games, such as Dialga's boss theme! Well, Dialga doesn't actually appear in this game even if you buy the DLC, of course, but don't worry about that, you don't need Dialga anyway.
Wait, what? You thought the returning tracks would be remasters that sound like this game's newer tracks? Come on, you liked them on the DS, you should be okay with paying for a copypaste. Actually, we did remake some of the tracks from Explorers of Sky, but we left them completely unused in the final DLC. Don't waste time wondering why and buy the DLC instead. It comes with free* donuts.

They do, but you enter them randomly from other dungeons and you only stay in them for a random amount of floors. And if you find those two legendary Pokémon, they're wandering around like normal Pokémon, they're not a goal at the end of the dungeon, they're a surprise. Which is fine, but in GtI they're the only legendaries you actually recruit, along with Cobalion and Terrakion. It's a lot less than all the other games.

well you could use custom starters of course, but that's a bit different
plus, considering breaks are a thing (but keep in mind that you can easily cheat to skip them) you won't have a stable alternative team anyway.

I just always go for Riolu as my partner, I did it on my 'canon' run and it doesn't feel right to do anything else (I get that on a lot of games, it pretty much ruins them for me). Also I like to headcanon the legendary Lucario mentioned in Rescue Team is my Explorers partner years later

only good scarves, ribbons, bows, specs and bands are stamina, x-ray, goggle specs, colored bows, scope lens (mostly for multihit moves), joy ribbon (on low level mons before the miracle chest and wonder chest, you can win the miracle one with the prism ticket at spinda's cafe with some luck, i won two) the other tight belt item that fully prevents hunger, iq booster
the rest is for selling, see insomniascope, pecha, persim, twist and everything else to be honest aside from rare and signature items
some of those items have intentionally negative effects for whatever reason

At least with Gates's roster, it was small but mostly contained pokemon that hadn't been used on previous PMDs, which somewhat made it a bit less shit. LGPE doesn't even have that going for it.

Gates's small roster actually got more use from me than the DS games, which were so ridiculously grindy that it was almost never worth using anyone that wasn't the two main characters

Aura bows are only a net +4(+1 in each stat), which isn't much. Joy Ribbon only gives 5 exp per hit, which is basically nothing. Insomniscope is useful for Darkrai.
Of the ones you didn't mention, stat-raising equipment(Power Band, Special Band) and Detect Band are alright before you find anything better. Pass Scarf and Warp Scarf are both very useful.
I also have no clue why negative equipment exists. Some of them could be useful if given to an enemy. But, there are some with a negative effect but with no effect on enemies(Racket Band, No-Aim Scope). If the game had unidentified items, I could understand the inclusion of such items, but there's no reason to include them if you can just read the item description.

I think Chunsoft mostly stopped including useless held items after Explorers. I think there's an item in Gates with no effect, but otherwise all of them have at least some use.

That would work with a theory of mine about how Rescue Team was very different early in development. There's lots of things in Rescue Team that gives me the impression the game was originally more like other MD games, with the original name for the game being what gave me the idea in the first place. warp scarf is godly for most of the game, rarely have to face enemies, it's way faster in terms of turns (belly) and real life, not to mention with Map Surveyor and Stair Sensor. The downside late-game though is that when you teleport into a room enemies get a free turn so room-wide moves can fuck you.

I wish I could recommend more, but most others are just shit.
Oh, and Defenders of Warmth is good. Haven't finished it because of explorers spoilers after the "main" part (no it's not an explorers novelization).
Victory Fire is a comic, but is actually pretty good, too. Not finished, however.

But like I said, most are either novelizations of explorers or just shit. The plain pokemon TF genre doesn't have much to offer beyond "I became a Vulpix" either.

I was expecting B0 01 to be Snarl, since it is the last TM in the list I linked earlier, but Snarl is actually BB 01. B0 01 is Cut. The ones before it seem to follow the list.
B5 01 is unused, but the description says that it teaches Dive.
BC 01, BD 01 and BE 01 are just unused, without a real description.
IDs between B6 01 and BA 01 are Frenzy Plant, Blast Burn, Hydro Cannon, Volt Tackle and Draco Meteor.

These are just items, I wouldn't be surprised if there were unused moves.

What sort of plot are you hoping for in the next installment of the PMD series? My idea of a plot would be something along the line of

From BC 01 to BF 01 are unused TMs with no description.
From C0 01 to 87 02 are gifts. First for each Pokémon (including unused gifts for evolutions), followed by type specific gifts, followed by the Premier Gift, followed by unused gifts with no description.
From 88 02 onwards are materials, which you can actually have in your regular inventory. You can place a material on the ground and pick it up. The item's menu has a "Send" option which crashes the game.

Yes they can. GtI was released in Japan in like 2 months or less after it was announced. If I remember correctly: XY was announced in January with some info, but then next to nothing until May. SM was announced in February with next to no info, with actual info coming in May. I think they usually announce (and in Japan, release) spinoffs before main game announcements, so we could have a PMD if they either give it less of a focus than they normally do (like I think they've done with less successful spinoffs) or if they announce the new main game in like March and are quick on releasing PMD outside of Japan.
