serious question, why do people constantly accuse alola of having hallway like routes? routes like the pic at the top are not hallway like. Yes, there are routes in alola that are hallway like, but every gen has hallway like routes like the pic on the bottom. why the hate?

In the Johto route you can choose to either surf or go through Mt. Mortar so there's two ways you can go through it.

The shitty megalopolis cranked up the shitposting. The reality is that SM/USUM have routes that are similar to previous games, but the transition to 3d has left a lot of wide open space around which leads to the illusion of emptiness. In addition, Alola is very small and really padded by dialogue which makes the maps seem worse.

Everyone here bitches about the wrong things.

While the johto one resembles more real life, the upper looks 1:1 like a game map. I mean yeah it is still a game, but it doesn´t feel alive.

The main issue is the dumb idea of keeping the "oversimplified routes/cities" concept of old 2D RPGs for a modern 3D game.
What worked well for old 2D games (using your imagination to "fix" and scale up the map) doesn't work with a highly detailed 3D map.

Either you give your world an acceptable size and scale, or either you stick to 2D.

hallways get a bad rap.

this route for example. it's literally a straight line. but it's nice to look at, has waterfalls with a little area at the bottom, gives off a comfy hiker feeling.

You can literally surf across to the central grass patch, then again to the other end of the route. Probably faster than passing through Mt Mortar

honestly a hallway is fine if it's got enough interesting stuff in it, Poni Plains is a pretty good area but it's locked behind the e4 because we don't want any tiny little babies getting confused and not knowing which direction to go. god forbid the player gets lost in your world and has to use their brain to figure out where to go next.
