Even if Ash loses against Leon it won't have even a hundredth of the impact, disappointment, anger, and butthurt Ash losing at Kalos had.

I'm conflicted /vp/.

I'm an avid anime watcher, so I've always preferred watching subbed. However, I've always watched Pokemon dubbed. Granted I don't think I've ever finished an entire season of Pokemon but I'm starting Journeys today and I'm wondering if I should watch it in English or Japanese, what do you guys recommend?

Advanced Battle was the last season with actual 4kids dubbing and 4kids did a pretty good job censorship aside, especially Eric Stuart (Brock, James)

XY is definitely better subbed but Serena's English VA really made it worthwhile.
After XYZ the show is whatever, no point in watching the English dub anymore since it's just really lazy and the soundtrack replacements aren't good anymore, watch it in Japanese for the better experience.

Subs, if availible are always a better alternative to dub, especially if we consider the newer series (From DP ownwards). The biggest flaw of the dub it that it replaces a lot of the original soundtrack with its own OST which was okay during 4Kids era but ranging from meh (DP/BW) to atrocious (XY/SM/JN).

Watching Mushoku ova, I feel that Iris should have been treated a lovable idiot rather than a "Misty' clone. I am not looking down on people from countryside but I feel BW series would have been better with naive immature Iris (like Eris) who starts to become more mature due to Ash's guidence who maintain his competence from DP series.

Maybe Iris could have started as an immature trainer with a long winning streak until Ash defeats her for the first time so she start following him until she could win a battle against him

It will be really unrealistic if Koharu go past the first round of the upcoming contest arc. Dawn was preparing herself to compete in contest while May gain plenty battling experience and caught a Wurmple to evolve it all the way to a Beautifly before entering their first contest.

The only thing Koharu & Eevee has been doing is just to copy other pokemon's moves.

I used to watch Pokemon dubbed, but switched to subbed and it was worth it.
I remember being impressed by how well some voices fit (Like Musashi's). That and the Japanese version has extra content the dub cuts out (EDs, OPs, music and occasional omakes)

Twitter fans think because Ash lost to this Articuno that it "undoes" his accomplishments of beating a different Articuno in BF. Some people flat out said Ash should be retired because his loss was embarrassing and they think Ash should be beating every legendary he sees.

I poked like three different holes in his argument in five seconds and he capitulated, agreeing that his stance didn’t really make sense

What's so weird is they don't understand Articuno's can be stronger than one another. This Articuno took 12 direct attacks, including Arcanine/Cinderace's super effective fire attacks, and kept going like it was nothing. This was clearly "God-tier" Articuno, similar to the one in the second movie, so I don't see what their problem is.

These people seem to think just because Ash beat one Articuno over 15 years ago with Charizard, that he has to beat every Articuno (and this is besides the fact he was using completely different pokemon this time), over 5 series later. It's like it should be common sense that legendaries of the same species can have different power levels.

It's also strange because people rightfully complained the Zapdos earlier in the series was way too weak (it got knocked down by Raboot of all things), and now the writers are back to portraying legends as they should be and they're still complaining.

I think the difference is a whole younger generation of fans grew up with DP onward compared to the original fans from the Kanto days so now you have dividing views how Ash should be. Couple that with SM having a very different version of Ash in the middle of all that, and that's why the fandom is so mixed these days.

Really there's 2 characterizations of Ash you can just about separate apart.
A. There's the character of him from OS to DP, then XY, where he starts as a dorky sassy kid and eventually matures into an experienced trainer and almost battle master mind, with his battle frontier win, Sinnoh league, and Kalos league tops bringing him closer and closer to his goal, with chunk of his initial childness draining away over time (which makes sense, if you ignore what the show tells you and just imagine Ash is about 15/16 when XY takes place).
B. Then there's the version of him from OS to DP + BW + SM where he doesn't really grow up as much, he's much more of a dork and comedy relief takes up a bigger portion of his character. He's still trying, but in terms of being powerful or cool, characterization A wins.

JN is where things get a big weird. It seems to be taking characterization A. the very skilled and powerful Ash with lots of experience and ability to win the league and applying the surface level character of B, which is still a dorky fun loving kid. Leaving neither characterization as fully realized. People who want shonen protag ash are gonna been put off by how much like a little kid he acts and people who want the lovable 10 year old just won't be interested when the show tries to be cool and make Ash cool.

just watched the new ep kinda glad that they got mopped by freezerburn It showed that missive power gap between casuals and legendary pokemon (personally not even sure if leon or any champs could take it on) it reminded me of the DP and OS days when pokemon were shown more as a threat to people I do think it could have been done a little better but over all I am happy with the outcome of how it was pretrad. goh got much needed development in this ep but thinking about goh and garrys relationship you can see that the whole rivalry could have been avioed if gary was nice in the first place then goh would be more accepting to following orders that way, just my own thoughts good ep overall

Easy answer. Number 1, Latias. Thanks to her human form she'd be able to stay of her pokeball most of the time anyways and can double as both his pokemon and a companion (allowing for better character arcs since it doesn't have to be spread across more characters). Both marketing and the show itself made it really seem like he was being set up to win, and it was the first time ever that the results hadn't been spoiled long before the episode aired. Nothing in this series is hinting towards Ash actually winning the World Championships, the level of fan investment is pretty low, and Tomiyasu is already known for handing out bullshit gimmies like candy anyway.

Like with so many other mass fan shitstorms, if you weren't there and actually following the series at the time, you're not going to get it. It wasn't just /vp/ that got mad, it was practically everyone that followed the show.

Wouldn't it have make more sense for Ash to use at least one pokemon from every region in this series? This is my opinion on Pokemon he should have gotten from remaining region

Jotho : Ash could catch a Kleavor and trade it for Goh's Scizor. Since Scizor & Tyranitar are the only two pokemon that I think suits Ash/

Hoenn : The two pokemon I really wanted for Ash were caught by Goh. So the only pokemon I can think of that Ash could get are Mawile, Milotic or Latios.

Unova : Maybe Ash can still get H-Zoroark or H-Braviary since they are technically Unovan Pokemon with different regional form. Off course Ash could always bring his Oshawott that evolves to its Hisuian form.

Kalos : Ash could get his Greninja back , maybe the show can give him H-Goodra for release his regular Goodra. The other Pokemon I could think of is a really strong F-Meowstic or Tyrantrum.

Alola : Ash could move his Incineroar to Sakuragi Lad. Maybe Cynthia give him the extra Rowlet he caught on Legends Special that evolves to H-Decidueye or Ash could reunite with the Wimpod he rescued on Alola and catches it.

It would have but the writers basically shot Ash in the foot on that one with Go. Because they decided that catching Pokémon is his whole shtick, they basically capped Ash at 6 Pokémon and rushed to so so Go would be the only one catching Pokémon. They didn’t outright say it but it’s kinda obvious

The type of anime they are trying to make Pokemon to be require a good dynamic cast. However it seem the writing staff was so sure that Ash and Goh's friendship will the carry the whole show that they never bother building the cast. They still can't understand that OS and DP was good because they had a good dynamic cast.

Currently they need to acknowledge that they need Ash to keep catching Pokemon and introduce one character that can turn Ash & Goh's boring duo to a dynamic trio.

I think the main reason why I'm skeptical of Goh staying is because I've seen this exact same discussion happen before with other characters. I remember back when people thought that Serena would stay for Gen 7 and were so convinced about it despite evidence already existing to the contrary, only for their predictions to be wrong. Oddly enough I don't really recall many people if any thinking that Lillie would stay for Gen 8, it's mostly just been Serena and Goh I've seen people who think they'll stay beyond their debut Gen.

Maybe it's dumb to you but narrative-wise him leaving seems more likely than him staying. I'm not saying that there's no chance that he'll stay (the possibility is always there), it's just that it makes more sense considering the way the current series is wrapping up (and contrary to what people say about PM theoretically continuing into Gen 9, right now at least it does look like it's wrapping up).

Why the hell would anyone think Lillie was staying? She had spent the last 2 years mostly standing around in the background to the point it felt like the writers regretted making her a main cast member instead of a recurring character since this meant they had to put her in almost every episode despite her story arc being done and them not really having anything in particular for her to actually do.

I gave her an example because I remember back when XY was ending there were many people (and very vocal ones even) who were insisting that Serena was staying for SM, but you didn't see such people saying the same for Lillie and her staying for the next series.

Then again, I suppose the real question should be why anyone thought Serena would be staying for SM even after Mallow and Incineroar already got leaked.

Lol Tracey was created because Pokémon Anime was starting to get popular in the west and TPC was afraid that Brock's skin color is seen as r**ist. But as time passes, the west don't seem to care about that at all.

Wasn't there a rumor that Dawn was supposed to take over as MC after DP? I thought I saw a theory about that and that so many things pointed to that being the case. Goh and Dawn are similar in that they are treated as co-mains to Ash.
