Realistically I'd probably just have a leafeon. They're reasonably sized and eevees are easy to find, even given out as starters. It feeds on sunlight so it's low maintenance. Doesn't like to fight which suits me fine, I'm not a competitive person and wouldn't battle frequently if at all.

Eevee are rare and very few are given out as starters. Why do people like you shove your headcanons onto the franchise like that? The elemental monkeys are shown more with trainers and more implied to be starter-tier in the games than Eevee and its evolutions are.

I would imagine owning a Metagross could parallel a car in terms of cost/maintenance (already manage this), and I'm not far from mountains and steel mines so Beldum isn't out of reach.

Owned a dog before, and Growlithe is particularly well-mannered and loyal so no huge worries of wildfires, disobedience, etc. Would be great to have during winter.

There are others I would like (and could handle) but realistically for the money, time and attention required I would probably stick with those two.

I'm sorry but keeping a Metagross is a lot harder than you think. Yeah yeah it's cool and strong and everyone will want to see it and envy you. But it's crazy rare so if you'd compare it with a car, it's the lamborghini of pokemon. To even get one you'd have to go to Hawaii and be around for mereor showers there, or buy it on the black market for a fortune. And then there is always the risk of it getting stolen because of its financial worth.

It's a large and very heavy mon so most of your furniture will have to go so you can have it in your house. It also feeds on iron and metal, so you will have to go up a mountain with it at least every second day. A lot more maintenance than a car. It eats cars, by the way. Have fun paying the damage after it got hungry and ate your neighbour's car.

It's also a very dangerous mon. If you let it out its pokeball you always have full responsibility for it not hurting others, be it on accident or out of boredom.

Every spring you need to take it up the snow mountain for several weeks for it to give birth to a bunch of beldums. Trust me that is not a delicious sight to watch.

Cuddling with it is difficult because its surface is really cold and unwelcoming, but unlike a car, it wants and needs to be cuddeled. Don't touch the claws. Trainers died trying so.

Trouble is that communicating with it is very difficult as it does not have clear facial expressions conveying its needs, so you might end up neglecting it without realizing. If your metagross isn't happy with your maintenance, it will not demand attention from you. With its 4 brains it will judge whether you are redundant for its wellbeing or not. If you ARE in fact redundant, it will remain distant and one day crush you in your sleep.

Anything. Whatch the anime. Big ones go inside the pokéballs when you get inside buildings and the rest can go with you.

There's no limit, from what we know. One might be enforced on you if you are a registered trainer with a pokédex, but otherwise you seem to be able to just buy pokéballs and capture whatever you want. The only problem would be to remember which pokémon is in what ball. The manga solves this problem because it lets you look inside, so that could be a thing.

Growlithe. I'd also have a Gengar to protect the house, Rapidash for transport, Pigeot for flight transport, Machamp for training and heavy stuff, Bulbasaur to hang around the garden and help there, Gardevoir or Tsareena for household chores, since they're the most human like and can handle things like humans. If I found one, a Shaymin too, just because he a cute boi.

Objectmons are easy to care for. Other than that dogmons for protection.

Max 3 by myself. Though they're objects they still need their social needs taken care of.

I'm thinking a psychic type like Claydol. It lifts heavy things, teleports, doesn't need to eat, and has ageless immortality. It'd be family guardian for generations.

Yeah so are dozens of other Pokemon, that's why Pokeballs exist. The entire line is shown to levitate and even be used as transportation.

I routinely clean, wash and maintain my car because I'm not a degenerate who lives in filth. Metagross will be well-attended, not to mention having a warm fire-type bro to hang out with if it's so cold.

Ignoring that it's among a select few psychic supergeniuses, I restricted myself to only two Pokemon specifically because I didn't want to divide my attention any further. They both would have me and each other if I'm unavailable. Also stated that I would have been searching for Beldum, i.e., raising it from that stage like to maturity over which time we would bond.

You just want to be the only Metagross trainer around - I see through your mischief as clearly as Metagross's Clear Body ability.

We both know buying/trading Pokemon is an option especially for something as popular as an Eevee. Obtaining one is possible even if you must pay a breeder for it.

But there still aren't that many people with them within the anime or games. A dozen people in the anime out of thousands of people shown doesn't mean they're common. 8 to 10 people out of a couple hundred of trainers ingame doesn't mean they are common. Protagonists getting them is just you needing to get them to complete the Pokedex. A protagonist getting something rare doesn't mean most people can or have the option to, if they did then more people would have them, that's what common means. Again, the
Elemental Monkeys in Unova are an example of this, you almost can't go a anywhere without at least one trainer having them, especially during early to midgame. You get the monkeys for free, gym leaders have them, preschoolers have them in route 3, Bianca, then Cheren gets one, Rangers have them in Pinwheel forest, at least six different people have them in Castelia, Nate and Rosa have one, a trainer in route 5 has all three and so on. THIS is what it means for something like that to likely be a starter and be common.

The fact most people (even in the old games) are not full-time pokemon trainers or have 6 pokemon or indeed specialise in multiple types, even in pokemon's near post-scarcity utopia.

Eevee are a low supply, high demand Pokemon akin to pure breed dogs. It will cost a small fortune to obtain one but it is not impossible to obtain. If you lack the drive and resources then you shouldn't have one.

Alder and Cynthia are both explicitly stated to have been champions for an extended period of time. It's constantly stated most people give up on the gym/island challenges.
Obviously applying 'real world' logic to that indicates there is some barrier not experienced in the games.

Those don't have nearly the representation that Eevee and it's evolutions have in the games or anime & manga, despite not even supposedly being rare like Eevees. They're super common in BW because of the restricted pokedex, but they're unobtainable outside Unova and Kalos.

Name any other pokemon with this many appearances. Add up all the characters using any of the elemental monkeys, including their evolutions, and compare that to just Eevee alone. They just cannot compete.

There are also other Pokemon that appear as often in the anime so you're wrong on that part. Barely anyone even had Eevee in the anime for several seasons, as shown by the listing you posted. The anime in general is a bad metric to use compared to games though because it's Monster of the Day.

I only brought up the monkeys as an example, in universe in the games, of what a true Starter for the commoner would look like. I'm not saying a few people have never began their meager journey with Eevee, that part's obvious and some do, it's just not as common as people think it is.

I owned a red-eyed tree frog as a kid. Those are rather rare, very iconic, only found in South America, you need to take extra special care of them to let them even survive in your climate because it will likely be dryer than the Amazon.

Honestly I probably ran into Rare pokemon as I often went up into the mountains and dug for crystals.
So maybe I would be a rock and ice trainer.
For certain by now I know I would have found a sableye or a carbink.

Difficult one's would be left/used for military/Glowies purpose, legendaries would be walking nukes and many governments would have an eye on them, and some under constant vigilance to make sure no person or nation tries to tame 'em because of the potential risk
Human/Pokemon relationship would be in a grey zone because while some of them are totally feral, some others would easily display an intelligence and sentience which surpasses that of the smartest man, even competing with computers
Plant/Water/Fairy type pokemon would be the most common, eevee being the equivalent of a dog with how common she could be
Fire/Earth/Psychic Pokemon you start to need a license
Air/Electric and so on, not only do you need a license but You will end up in a list, and "mind controlling" pokemon would just be usedby the military and hunted away from urban/populated areas due to the risk of someone taming them, i guess a blackmarket could be born out of this
Our knowledge about pokemons would leave the entire pokeverse look like a retarded kid's universe, not only would we experiment with/on/in them, we would also make use of other pokemon to do so, the only one we wouldnt have knowledge of and very prolly remain as a myth is arceus, seeing what we did and will do, i doubt he ill be happy about it

Pokemon enslavement/abuse would be a common thing, as i mentioned before, some of them can have an output which dwellers our current nuclear reactors
In such a universe it would be a common theory that the government used psychic types to enslave or stripe other pokemon of their consciousness, to use them and produce energy aswell other things
in fact, in such a case i DO believe something like a "global shadow government" could exist, and that they'd make use of enslaved pokemons to heal themselves back to their youth, making them theorically immortal

the global politics would be way different too, as there would be an active threat to our species as a whole, and even though wars could be kinda rare, they'd be more brutal, the laws and rules of the geneva convention would have a size that of the bible or even bigger

There already are religions in the pokeverse based on mythicals/legendaries, if anything we would take it a step further and make entire types their "angels" or "prophets" of sorts, like an entire religion treating psychic type as living physical angels, kinda like the hindi and cows really

i'd probably only be able to start off with a dunsparce. dunsparce has a surprisingly flexible learnset (can learn surprising stuff like blizzard, thunderbolt, dragon rush, fire blast, solar beam, iron tail, poison jab, even shadow ball) so i feel like dunsparce would be a great but still feasable first encounter
i like >>50278787 's idea of having objectmons, so i'd maybe try to go catch a sigilyph. worst case scenario, if i get hurt i can have my dunsparce dig us out of trouble. sigilyphs are territorial so they wouldn't chase for very long
for my third mon, i'd like to catch a fomantis that later evolves into lurantis. lurantis require maintenance to keep their colors, so that would probably be my last pokemon (and most expensive one)
