Let it be known that this filename is the reason people still bring me up, despite not doing anything in awhile. And I was only trying to make the threads better by having people include OS/AG/DP/BW/XY/XYZ/SM/PM/MPM. I promise there's nothing wrong about talking about any past anime and just because "they're over" doesn't mean you can't talk about them. There's also all the times I tried to defend Serena/Amour from people who have been annoying to people who like them, which nowadays people obsessively bring me up whenever someone brings up Serena/Amour.

Lots of people don't care about Transformers outside of G1, lots of people don't care about the Power Rangers outside of MMPR, lots of people don't care about Yugioh outside of the first series, lots of people don't care about Digimon outside of Adventures. All of these franchises do a TON of nostalgia content for these periods to people they know don't care about anything beyond it, and it usually does better than the rest of their stuff. Plain and simple, the only people the writers care about are the Japanese fanbase. What that means in terms of shipping, I really can't say, (although I do know that Japanese fans love Dawn). All I'm saying is you need to keep the REAL target audience in mind for your schizo analysis.

Good question but there is an answer.
Pokemon is a contender for most western influenced anime next to DBZ. You'll notice as the seasons go on japanese gestures dwindle as the series becomes more aware of its global audience.
Not just the west but everywhere. You'll notice Pokemon is one of the few anime that can air in the middle east unedited.
There are still episodes that will be banned but for the most part pokemon is conscious to not piss off the customs of any culture its distributed to.

Naturally that is different from them outright pandering to westerners, which hasn't shown many signs of happening yet, but it might be.
You might have noticed that PLA uses the American made western title art for pokemon in all languages instead of a japanese logo for example

If you want an example of an anime series consciously nodding to the western audience, there's Digimon. Digimon canonized dub terminology as the "english" in the original sub 20 years after the fact specifically to appeal to western fans.

In japanese, when the characters speak engrish, they use dub exclusive terms. Like if Japanese Ash started calling Jukain "sceptile" when speaking to a unovan.

To be fair, it is. It always has been. The overarching narrative, the plot thread that has carried the series since episode 5 has been the pokemon league. That was where all the eggs in the basket were put. Now that Ash became world champion, and therefore has climbed the tallest peak, what else did he do? Well simple, he encountered random people and pokemon as he just drifted around, and usually just helped resolve what problem that person/pokemon was having. SM took inspiration from the indigo training arc and also the orange islands arc, as Ash had a home he could return to while also competing in a tropical pokemon league instead of being a perpetual drifter.

I don't consume enough japanese media to know if this is normal, but in the west Misty has tons of overlap with typical girlfriend characters.

Iris is literally the first girl to go on an official date with Ash and they even had an episode set up like a marital spat and divorce and how it affected their Pokemon with the two making up, Ash giving her a flower and her giving him an apple, which means a lot if you know Iris. To them, what's canon and what's not isn't going to get in the way of enjoying pairings that bring them joy. But they also teased May and Dawn and Iris and Serena and ALL OF THEM were clearly dropping hints to their respective generation of kids.
I don't think pokemon ever had a real romantic endgame in mind, even if they do it NOW it will still feel like it was a spur of the moment thing picked out of all the other options.
