What does that say about Lance, going from finalist one year to jobbing out to Diantha the next? If anything, this just speaks to the fluidity of placements. It's fair the assume, though off-screen, that Diantha and Cynthia, and probably Steven too, have been to the PWC before, and Alain, Ash, and Iris were obvious noobies. This would mean at least 3 previous PWC M8 competitors didn't make the cut between two years.

The current dub theme is weird. It is not a remake or reprise of the original "Gotta Catch em all!" Its the XY version with new instruments. Even the backing vocals are literally just the same audio.
Its not like movies 20 and 22 where the singer from XY was brought back to sing it again, they just took the mp3 of his singing and slapped it onto a new beat

Watching through the Hoenn League, and a few numbers popped up here and during the Grand Festival that are interesting.

They mention in Hi Ho, Silver Wind that there are 247 competitors in the Grand Festival. So rounding up to 250 just for simplicity, each one of them would have had to gain five ribbons, meaning there are at least 1250 Contests in Hoenn each year. There are probably many more than that, considering that people can get one to four without qualifying (and maybe more than five if they want). Even still, at 1250, that's about three Contests a day somewhere in Hoenn each year.

Meanwhile in Shocks and Bonds (pic related) they mention that over 600 people compete in the Hoenn League to get reduced to 256 and then 32. We can imagine that there are more than eight gyms, but as far as we know, there are only the eight in the game also in the anime. 600 people beat each of the Gym Leaders once over the course of a year, meaning that the Gym Leaders lose to a challenger more than once a day (1.64 days). And they must get challenged more often than that, since not all trainers make it through eight badges. I guess major respect to Roxanne for handling all that in addition to being a school teacher. Ditto for Juan for being a Gym Leader and the man of everyone's dreams.

I can't speak for contests, but I've never been under the impression that earning the badges is on a time limit. If it takes you 3 years to collect 8 badges, then you can enter the League with those 3 years worth of badges so long as you haven't used them to enter before. I think it's only when you enter a League, and your specific badges get scanned (think like QR codes) by the verification machine shown at the Pokémon Center, that you need new ones to regain entry. At the beginning of each region, Ash would go to the Pokémon Center and "register" for the Pokémon League, and would have to "register" at the Pokémon League itself with his badges, but there's no indication I saw that gave a time limit between those two events that, if it expired, you'd have to start over.

For Contests, they heavily implied that May would have to start over if she missed registering, but it seems like once the Festival is over, you can start over again instantly. I think they mentioned early on that Robert keeps winning the Hoenn Grand Festival.

Personal preference would be that he has to challenge the gyms again, but they use higher level teams like in the games and manga, or just more Pokemon. So a rookie facing Roxanne gets Geodude and Nosepass, but someone challenging Roxanne with one League under their belts gets Golem, Kabuto, Nosepass and Onix, on and on, like the Emerald rematches.

Definitely a neat thing they could've gone into at some point in the Ashnime. Or maybe they did in a later season and I just didn't catch it.

One thing TR was trying to do in Hoenn was build a secret base for Giovanni, we see some examples of this in the series and they made one in the episode Oak/Birch appear together with all the starters after the Petalburg arc. But then after that base gets destroyed they never bother again.

I mean, aside from Gary, OS didn't really have recurring characters either. At best you had popular CotDs who'd get one additional return and then leave, or characters that'd be for one specific arc and then leave (like Ritchie or Todd). Well yeah, but OS tended to bring back characters that would be memorable like Butch/Cassidy, Casey, the Magikarp salesman, the Kanto COTD's who returned in Johto, etc.

But yeah it wasn't until DP and then BW where we had a huge cast of rotating rivals and recurring characters. Sometimes I think DP and BW had way too many rivals, but that's just me.

DP's rivals were fine because most of them were to fill out rivals for Dawn to compete with in contests. BW's rivals were a bit out of control because they gave rivals to Iris and Cilan, who didn't actually need rivals for what they did in the story.

This was my first time watching the Hoenn League. I know the ending got shit on a lot in the 2000s for Pikachu losing to a Meowth, but it felt good and deserved. I think this is the first time Ash loses to the eventual winner, rather than his rival getting knocked out in the very next round. May and Tyson's bonding over food is adorable and hashtag relatable.

Morrison was hard carried by the fact that he's voiced by Sean Schemmel, who goes fucking ham to the point where he's hilarious. I'm glad he showed up late in the series, because too much of him early on would've killed the vibe. Still don't like the character type, but they handled him well.

I enjoyed the pacing of this League over the Kalos League, where the first qualifier skipped directly to the quarter and semifinals. I guess doing that gave the impression that Ash could win against Alain, but I honestly think it just cheapened the whole thing. All in all, my big takeaway is that ADV starts with an episode where everyone's amazed that a Pelipper can do Vine Whip and Flamethrower, but by the end you have a Meowth using Thunderbolt and no one blinks an eye at it.

Both the Grand Festival and the League were satisfying to watch. Gonna be unreasonably emotional when the dub switch happens in a few episodes.

At this point Ash's league losses were getting predictable, but in retrospect this one caused the least outrage from fans since well, it was just ok. I do think his loss in the Johto league has more meaning though since it was Ash's Charizard who lost to a strong Blaziken at the time, so it felt like a bigger impact.

Her 4 specials actually do show her develop as a Gym leader.

The first one takes place right after she leaves so she misses Ash/Brock at first and those 3 brothers who harrassed her in her last episode appear again. This is also the debut of the Gyarados Misty tames in the episode and learns to control it.

Her second specials is the one Sakura appears in, Misty learns how to make Cascade badges, and Sakura is the first trainer to challenge her to an official Gym match. Sakura wins this battle and this is actually good development for her since it's her final appearance.

The third Misty special is the one Casey is in. This one is a weird shipping episode and Misty and Casey battle this kid named Georgio who likes Misty. Casey forces him to take her out on a date to the ballgame.

The final Misty special has Daisy with her in a major role, they both get Luvdisc in this episode and have to rescue them from Butch/Cassidy. If you watch these specials in their proper airings during AG, it's easy to see how Misty changed and development between the end of Johto and her AG cameos with Togetic and the later one at Pallet.

Fun fact: AG134, the next ep, was Misty's final episode in the anime for over 12 years until Sun/Moon. This is the last episode Misty appeared in for over a decade and 3 series in a row as she doesn't appear in DP, BW or XY at all.

I'm imagining an alternate reality where instead of Max returning, they just had Misty travel with Brock and May during Battle Frontier (alternatively, Misty instead of Brock, but either way we get someone to do physical comedy with Brock during his horny moments). Kayfabe it however you want. I definitely would've tried watching it more as a teenager if Misty were there. Oh, well, crab rave.

I'm more surprised over Misty's total absence in the series after this. The way this ep ended and Misty's low-key farewell, I don't think the writers had any idea at the time this would be Misty's final episode for over 12 years and 3 series. Misty doesn't appear in any of the rest of the Battle Frontier eps. She doesn't appear at all in DP which is 4 years. She doesn't appear in BW or XY either.

It's really strange in retrospect. Misty feels like she returned a lot now because she shows up in SM and then the last 9 episodes of the show, but she really did go an over decade gap without getting an episode for 3 whole gens.

It's not that unusual. The writers felt they had a recurring formula: Misty came back in AG, May came back in DP, and Dawn came back in BW. The issue is that apparently the XY writers completely forgot to find a way to incorporate Iris, and Kaori was out of commission so they couldn't bring back May for ORAS pandering, so they compensated by creating Sawyer as a Hoenn OC and by bringing Steven back. Iris got shafted until they could bring her back as Unova champion in SM. And the fact that XY forgot to bring back Iris meant SM could argue not calling back to XY was keeping the new trend going.

I know next to nothing about DP and BW, but I know that May is in a Contest with Dawn and Dawn busts Ash's balls with Iris for an episode. Then for whatever reason they stopped having the previous Pokegirl come back, until I guess the Alola trio returned in Journeys. Either way, that type of interaction was the only thing I was really hoping for or even expecting in this situation.

I guess they just started bringing people back to shill the games after a point. They brought Misty and Brock back to shill LGPE during Gen 7, similar to Dawn's presence throughout Journeys. They could've done the same for HGSS in DP, but I guess they chose to have Lyra instead. Also a shame that May's VA was already ill by the time X&Y was coming around,. Having her interact with Serena would've been neat because their arcs are similar and also pic related.

The fact that you think Plot is necessary in pokemon anime shows that you don't understand anything and simply want a serious Pokemon anime with gundam type story. Truth is, story and narrative is pointless in an anime that meant to have over 100 episode. Everytime an anime passes over 60 episode, the story goes downhill as proven by many long running shonen & romcom anime. The only reason people still watches those long running shonen and romcom is due to their attachment to sudden characters and see their conclusion.

Pokemon anime never meant to be a plot driven show, its meant to be a continuous advertisement. The only reason it lasted 26 years was due to people's attachment toward sudden characters such as Ash, TRio, Brock, Dawn, Misty etc etc. That's why the smartest thing writers could do was follow Doreamon and Sgt Keroro route where Pokemon become a slice of life comedy anime with battles and villainous arc in the middle.

How would have Lance done against Diantha if he copied Alain's Charizard's early movese? Dragon Claw would be useless against Gardevoir but Steel Wing would be super effective. Dynamax Dragonite could also uses Max Steelpike on Mega Gardevoir.

Well, for one, Lance would have turned Hyper Beam into a homing attack. Then he would use steel-wing to one-shot two of Alain's pokemon. Then he'd use Flamethrower as Flare Blitz and also as Flamethrower because fuck you. And finally, Dragon Claw would always be super effective and KO whatever it hits. Then Lance would use all 3 gimmicks and get two free dynamaxes, and despite it all his final pokemon would faint but it's ok because it un-faints itself and he wins.

Kind of at the point where the TRio is too much. To be fair, this happened much, much earlier in X&Y than in ADV, so there's something to be said about how entertaining they are in this series. But now they're taking up real estate in actual continuity episodes and not just CotD stuff. The new motto they debut is fine, but I don't care about it.

Did you even read my post idiot? I specifically said that anime and game are different because game protagonist is a blank slate and everything in the game is for them but that's not how an anime works. The whole idea that one kid with no experience in battle became the strongest trainer in the entire region and catches every legendary pokemon (within the game) in 15 Hours works only in game because game protagonist are blank slate for players to self inserter. However the anime doesn't not work that way.
